The NbCl5 being a strong electrophile, is a potential candidate to act as a Lewis acid, and therefore it mediates various organic reactions. For this reason, it has received continuous attention by Brazilian researchers, especially in recent decades, since Brazil holds the largest reserves of niobium, besides being the largest producer of this element. The Michael addition reaction is one of the most widely used for forming carbon-carbon bonds and takes place by the addition of nucleophiles to activated olefins. Although this type of reaction is usually catalyzed by base, there are reports in the literature on the use of various Lewis acids in this type of reaction. The synthesis of enamines based acetilenodicarboxilates and amines, aromatic or alkyl, by Michael addition reaction is quite interesting, since these are valuable synthetic intermediates for the synthesis of heterocyclic and they are used in multicomponent reactions. The derivatives of anilino-fumarate also have a great potential for medical application. In this study we investigated the use of niobium pentachloride as Lewis acid to catalyze the Michael additions between the derivatives of aniline and acetilenodicarboxilates the synthesis of enamines

We report magnetic data of free standing films of poly( aniline) (PANI) protonated with a plasticizing di-ester of succinic acid. The data have been obtained using the electron spin resonance (ESR) technique at two different frequencies, X-band (9.4 GHz) and Q-band ( 34 GHz), on one hand, and by magnetization measurements in broad ranges of temperatures and magnetic fields on the other hand. All the data can be explained assuming a transition as a function of temperature from delocalized magnetic moments in the valence band to localized positive polarons in several antiferromagnetically correlated bands. By increasing the magnetic field, the magnetic properties are affected in several ways. An intra-band admixture of states occurs; it contributes to increase the spins' localization and finally promotes an antiferromagnetic-metamagnetic transition.

The goal of this study was to investigate the ability of fluoride to modulate the genotoxic effects induced by the oxidative agent hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and the alkylating agent methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) in vitro by the single-cell gel ( comet) assay. Chinese hamster ovary cells were exposed in culture for 1 h at 37 degrees C to sodium fluoride at 7-100 mu g/ml. NaF-treated and control cells were then incubated with 0-10 mu M MMS in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for 15 min at 37 degrees C, or 7-100 mu M H2O2 in distilled water for 5 min on ice. Negative control cells were treated with PBS for 1 h at 37 degrees C. Clear concentration-related effects were observed for the two genotoxins. Increase of DNA damage induced by either MMS or H2O2 was not significantly altered by pretreatment with NaF. The data indicate that NaF does not modulate alkylation-induced genotoxicity or oxidative DNA damage as measured by the single-cell gel ( comet) assay. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel

Polyaniline (PAni) thin films were deposited onto BK7 glass substrates using the in situ deposition technique. The control of the time and the aniline concentration in the PAni polymerization reaction on the film deposition allowed us to prepare films with different thickness, down to similar to 25 nm. The film growth process was monitored by measuring the UV-vis spectra and the AFM height profiles of the film surface. The curves of adsorption kinetics were analyzed with the Avrami's model, yielding an exponent it n = 3, thus indicating nucleation of spheroids at the initial stages of polymerization that grow through a diffusion process. AFM images of the surface height profiles corroborate this hypothesis, with spheroids growing with no preferred orientation during the in situ deposition. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 nanocomposite material with improved properties as positive electrode was prepared by a new synthesis method. In a first step, LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 mixed oxide in the form of a fine powder was dispersed in aniline and this suspension was sprayed on the surface of an aqueous solution of HCl and ammonium peroxodisulfate. The resulting PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 nanocomposite is spontaneously formed by polymerization of the aniline molecules present in the drops together with small particles of the oxide. This method induces the formation of nanocomposites showing a better distribution of the oxide particles in the polymer matrix than that observed in related PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 microcomposites prepared under ultrasound irradiation to disperse the oxide particles during PANI polymerization. Measurements of electrical conductivity and zeta potential, as well as structural characterization of PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 nanocomposites, reveal the existence of relatively strong interactions between the conducting polymer and the oxide particles. This feature determines higher values of the electrical conductivity (0.5 S cm(-1)) and of the average operative voltage (3.6 V), as well as of other technological parameters of the nanocomposite when it is used as the positive electrode of rechargeable lithium batteries, in comparison to those of the related microcomposite materials already reported.

The thermal behavior of blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride), or PVDF, and poly(o-methoxyaniline) doped with toluene sulfonic acid was studied by thermogravimetic analysis, electrical conductivity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Blends with thermal and electrical conductivity stabler than the conductive polymer alone were obtained. Nevertheless, degradation occurs after a long period of time (500 h) at high temperatures. The possible association of the conductivity decay with dopant loss, degradation and structural and morphological changes of the blend is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Objective: To investigate if formocresol, paramonochlorophenol, or calcium hydroxide modulate the genotoxic effects induced by the oxidatively damaging agent hydrogen peroxide (H 2O 2) or the alkylating agent methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) in vitro by using single cell gel (comet) assay. Study design: Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells in culture were exposed directly to formocresol, paramonochlorophenol, or calcium hydroxide (adjusted to 100 μg/mL) for 1 hour at 37°C. Subsequently the cultures were incubated with increasing concentrations (0-10 μmol/L) of MMS in phosphate-buffered solution (PBS) for 15 minutes at 37°C or of H 2O 2 at increasing concentrations (0-100 μmol/L) in distilled water for 5 minutes on ice. The negative control cells were treated with PBS for 1 hour at 37°C. The parameter from the comet assay (tail moment) was assessed by the Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric test followed by a post hoc analysis (Dunn test). Results: Clear concentration-related effects were observed for the genotoxin-exposed CHO cells. Increase of MMS-induced DNA damage was not significantly altered by the presence of the compounds tested. Similarly, no significant changes were observed when hydrogen peroxide was used with the endodontic compounds evaluated. Conclusion: Formocresol, paramonochlorophenol, and calcium hydroxide are not able to modulate alkylation-induced genotoxicity or oxidative DNA damage as depicted by the single cell gel (comet) assay. © 2006 Mosby, Inc. (Chemical Equation Presented) The reaction between the benzohydroxamate anion (BHO-) and bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate (BDNPP) has been examined kinetically, and the products were characterized by mass and NMR spectroscopy. The nucleophilic attack of BHO- follows two reaction paths: (i) at phosphorus, giving an unstable intermediate that undergoes a Lossen rearrangement to phenyl isocyanate, aniline, diphenylurea, and O-phenylcarbamyl benzohydroxamate; and (ii) on the aromatic carbon, giving an intermediate that was detected but slowly decomposes to aniline and 2,4-dinitrophenol. Thus, the benzohydroxamate anion can be considered a self-destructive molecular scissor since it reacts and loses its nucleophilic ability. © 2009 American Chemical Society.

Amino acids are well known to be an important class of compounds for the maintenance of body homeostasis and their deficit, even for the polar neuroactive aminoacids, can be controlled by supplementation. However, for the amino acid taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) this is not true. Due its special physicochemical properties, taurine is unable to cross the blood-brain barrier. In addition of injured taurine transport systems under pathological conditions, CNS supplementation of taurine is almost null. Taurine is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory semi-essential amino acid extensively involved in neurological activities, acting as neurotrophic factor, binding to GABA A/glycine receptors and blocking the excitotoxicity glutamate-induced pathway leading to be a neuroprotective effect and neuromodulation. Taurine deficits have been implicated in several CNS diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, epilepsy and in the damage of retinal neurons. This review describes the CNS physiological functions of taurine and the development of new derivatives based on its structure useful in CNS disease treatment.&; 2012 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.
