The development of electrochemical potentiokinetic methods as applied to the testing of metals and alloys is followed from its early phases up to its latest advances relating to intergranular corrosion, SCC and pitting corrosion tests of stainless steels and special alloys and to the examination of their structure and properties. In assessing the susceptibility to intergranular and pitting corrosion by potentiokinetic polarization tests, the polarization curves which apply to the bulk of the alloy grains (the matrix) must be distinguished from those pertaining to grain boundaries. Cyclic polarization measurements such as the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) test make it possible to derive the alloy's susceptibility to intergranular, pitting and crevice corrosion from characteristic potentials and other quantities determined in the 'double loop' test. EPR is rapid and responds to the combined effects of a number of factors that influence the properties of materials. The electrochemical p otentiokinetic tests are sensitive enough to detect structural changes in heat treated materials ranging far beyond the stainless steels alone, and can be used for non-destructive testing aimed at elucidating the properties and behavior of materials. © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Austenitic stainless steel presents phase changes caused by heat treatment and welding processes. Because it represents a problem in the design of high-homogeneity magnets, we have been studying the magnetic properties of Ti alloys for their use instead of stainless steel as structural material for superconducting magnet construction. In this work, we present the comparative study of the influence of magnetic properties of steel and Ti alloys on the magnetic-field homogeneity of a superconducting coil through numerical calculation using the measured magnetic properties. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. In the majority of cases of bone fracture requiring surgery, orthopedic implants (screw-plate and screw) are used for osteosynthesis and the infections associated with such implants are due to the growth of microorganisms in biofilms. The objective of this study was to identify microorganisms recovered from osteosynthesis implants used to fix bone fractures, to assess the viability of the cells and the ability of staphylococci to adhere to a substrate and to determine their sensitivity/resistance to antimicrobials. After surgical removal, the metal parts of austenitic stainless steel (ASTM F138/F139 or ISO NBR 5832-1/9) were transported to the Laboratory of Clinical Microbiology, washed in buffer and subjected to ultrasonic bath at 40±2 kHz for 5 minutes. The sonicated fluid was used to seed solid culture media and cell viability was assessed under the microscope by with the aid of a fluorescent marker. The production of extracellular polysaccharide by Staphylococcus spp. was investigated by means of adhesion to a polystyrene plate. The profile of susceptibility to antimicrobials was determined by the disk diffusion assay. The most frequently isolated bacteria included coagulase-negative Staphylococcus resistant to erythromycin, clindamycin and oxacillin. Less frequent were Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistant to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and ampicillin, Acinetobacter baumannii resistant to ceftazidime, Enterobacter cloacae resistant to cephalothin, cefoxitin, cefazolin, levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin, Bacillus spp. and Candida tropicalis. The observation of slides by fluorescence microscope showed clusters of living cells embedded in a transparent matrix. The test for adherence of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus to a polystyrene plate showed that these microorganisms produce extracellular polysaccharide. In conclusion, the metal parts were colonized by bacteria related to orthopedic implant infection, which were resistant to multiple antibiotics.

Stainless steel coatings obtained by High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) were characterized using optical (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe micro-analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), open-circuit potential (E-OC) measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarisation tests. Differences among coated steels were mainly related with the gun-substrate distance parameter (310 nm for samples A and B and 260 min for C and D). The open-circuit potential values measured for all the samples after 18 h of immersion in aerated and unstirred 3.4% NaCl solution were: - 0.334, - 0.360, - 0.379 and - 0.412 V vs. Ag/AgCl,KClsat. for samples A to D, respectively. For EIS measurements, Nyquist plots showed higher capacitive semi-circle for samples sprayed at longer distance, indicating higher corrosion resistance in NaCl solution. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
