Nanotechnology, the science of minuscule, has developed products which are able t o manipulate atoms and molecules that could be applied in the sterilization process of dental instruments. Objetives: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the self-cleaning action of TiO2 and Ag nanoparticles coating on dental instruments by the photocataliys process under UV and visible light irradiation. Material and method: Microbiologic tests were done using dental cement spatulas coated with TiO2 and Ag nanoparticles (one or three layers), and contaminated with 10 mcrl of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis, respectively. After contamination, they were exposed to ultraviolet light and visible light for 120 minutes. Next, they were transferred to and stored in test tubes with BHI (Brain Heart Infusion) and incubated in 35 to 37 °C. Checking times for bacterial growth and for control and retrieval tests were done at: 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. Result: The Pseudomonas aeruginosa was inactive after 120 minutes of ultraviolet light irradiation, thus confirming the heterogeneous photocatalytic activity of TiO2 and Ag. The Pseudomonas aeruginosa was not inactivated under visible light irradiation and the Enterococcus faecalis was not inactivated under UV and visible light irradiation of the dental cement spatulas coated with TiO2 and Ag nanoparticles in the readings to 96 hours, showing bacterial growth. Conclusion: There were no influence of one or three layers of TiO2 and Ag nanoparticles coating of the spatulas in the results. The heterogeneous photocatalysis activity of TiO2 and Ag under UV light irradiation was confirmed for Pseudomonas aeruginosa but not under visible light. Enterococcus faecalis did not confirmed the photocatalytics activity of TiO2 and Ag under UV light irradiation and visible lights irradiation.

Lasers are widely used tools in many therapeutic modalities in medical lasers and can be divided into low and high intensity. For the treatment of periodontal disease, lowintensity lasers are related to reduce the number of bacteria and to induce inflammatory and analgesic properties. The high intensity lasers can be used in surgical procedures, improving hemostasis, promoting more accurate cuts, removal of dental calculus as well as thermomechanical and photochemical interactions with tissue. The high-intensity laser Erbium impregnated with chromium: YSGG laser has shown satisfactory results when applied in endodontic, restorative denstistry, surgical procedures and non-surgical periodontal treatment. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the studies that investigated the effects of Er, Cr: YSGG laser on the morphology and biocompatibility of titanium and root surfaces irradiated with these lasers, even beyond the effect on the treatment of periodontitis and periimplantitis.

A metal coping may undergo changes during porcelain firing, which compromises its marginal adaptation. The use of NiCrTi alloy proposes to minimize this effect through the high melting point of titanium present in its composition. This study evaluated the influence of porcelain firing cycle on the marginal adaptation of NiCrTi copings in different preparation designs. Forty standardized metal dies were fabricated with the following combinations finish line/convergence of the axial walls: 1) shoulder/6°; 2) shoulder/20°; 3) sloping shoulder/6°; 4) sloping shoulder/20°. On each die a metal ceramic restoration coping was made. The die/coping set was stabilized with orthodontic elastics, divided into four equidistant areas with three measurement points each and a cementation pressure was simulated. The measurements were taken under a stereomicroscope (32×). After the first measurement, the copings were submitted to sintering cycles simulating porcelain application. For repeated measurements, the same procedures described above were performed. Data were submitted to Student’s-t test, 1-way ANOVA and Tukey´s test (α = 0.05). Adaptation means (µm) before and after porcelain firing in different preparations were: 1) 111.92 and 127.31; 2) 124.15 and 135.48; 3) 122.19 and 138.77; 4) 166.09 and 186.72; respectively. The porcelain firing impaired adaptation, regardless of the preparation design. The preparation in a 20° sloping shoulder provided a worse adaptation when compared with preparations that had 6° and 20° shoulder, which were statistically equal. The 6° sloping shoulder was statistically equal to the other three preparation designs.

This work reports the experimental evaluation of physical and gas permeation parameters of four spinel-based investments developed with or without inclusion of sacrificial fillers. Data were compared with those of three commercial formulations. Airflow tests were conducted from 27 to 546°C, and permeability coefficients were fitted from Forchheimer's equation. Skeletal densities found for spinel- (ρs = 3635 ± 165 kg/m3) and phosphate-bonded (ρs = 2686 ± 11 kg/m3) samples were in agreement with the literature. The developed investments were more porous and less permeable than commercial brands, and the differences were ascribed to the different pore morphologies and hydraulic pore sizes of ceramic matrices. The inclusion of both fibers and microbeads resulted in increases of total porosity (42.6–56.6%) and of Darcian permeability coefficient k1 (0.76 × 10−14–7.03 × 10−14 m2). Air permeation was hindered by increasing flow temperatures, and the effect was related to the influence of gas viscosity on ΔP, in accordance with Darcy's law. Casting quality with molten titanium (CP Ti) was directly proportional to the permeability level of the spinel-based investments. However, the high reactivity of the silica-based investment RP and the formation of α-case during casting hindered the benefits of the highest permeability level of this commercial brand.

Osseointegration involves a cascade of biological events, which can be accelerated by modifying the micro and/or nanometric topography of dental implant surfaces. Considering that different treatment types modify the titanium surface giving it a more pronounced rough topography, and physicochemical changes that appear to positively influence the osseointegration process, a literature review was made on the main types of surface treatments and their influence on the biological and cellular aspects of osseointegration, with publications dating from 1969 until the present moment. Although the precise role of the implant surface on the osseointegration of dental implants is not completely clear, the specific effects of implant surface on bone regeneration, initial kinetics, and evolution of mechanical properties have shown to be quite promising. Thus, based on dental implant surface modifications, osseointegration can be defined as a process by which rigid asymptomatic fixation of an alloplastic material can be achieved and kept in close contact with bone tissue, being resistant to early and late functional loads. This process can be modulated by an appropriate treatment of the alloplastic material surface.
