Mostrou-se que o pré-tratamento com as vitaminas tiamina[B1], piridoxina[B6] e cianocobalamina [B12], isoladas ou administradas conjuntamente, não inibiu o edema de pata produzido pela carragenina em ratos, nem as contorções abdominais produzidas pelo ácido acético em camundongos. Por outro lado, o diclofenaco [25 ou 50mg/kg] ou talidomida [45mg/kg] inibiram o edema de pata em ratos, e a associação das três vitaminas à estas drogas, mas não as vitaminas administradas isoladamente, potencializou os efeitos do diclofenaco [25 ou 50mg/kg] no tempo de quatro horas e a talidomida [45mg/kg], nos tempos de duas, três e quatro horas após a carragenina. As contorções abdominais em camundongos foram inibidas pelas doses de 25 ou 50mg/ kg de diclofenaco. A associação das três vitaminas ou apenas da cianocobalamina, potencializou as duas doses do diclofenaco utilizadas. As contorções abdominais foram inibidas também pela talidomida [45mg/kg] e a associação das três vitaminas, ou cada uma das vitaminas administradas isoladamente, foram capazes de potencializar os efeitos da talidomida. É provável que a diferença no mecanismo de ação destas drogas seja responsável por esta diferença dos efeitos das vitaminas. O presente estudo preconiza o uso de antiinflamatórios, combinados com as vitaminas tiamina[B1], piridoxina[B6] e cianocobalamina [B12], em doenças crônicas, diminuindo assim a dose destas drogas e seus efeitos colaterais. This paper describes the occurrence of cor triatriatum sinister, a rare cardiac malformation in dogs, associated with pulmonary edema and pulmonary hypertension in a 5-year-old Poodle female with history of acute dyspnea and cyanosis. The animal presented acute respiratory failure, heart failure with low cardiac output, progressing to acute tubular necrosis and death. The diagnosis was made posmortem due to the clinical instability of the dog. This malformation was diagnosed by the subdivision of the left atrium into two compartments separated by an abnormal fibromuscular membrane, absence of structural abnormalities of the mitral valve and thickening of pulmonary artery tunica media associated with renal tubular degeneration. The occurrence of cor triatriatum in dogs is most common in the right atrium, defined as cor triatriatum dexter. Additionally, pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with this malformation is described only in humans with this heart defect.

INTRODUCTION: The study of placentas from pregnant human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive women has become the subject of numerous studies in the literature. Morphological, viral, immune and inflammatory placental aspects have been analyzed in order to grasp the vertical transmission of the virus. OBJECTIVE: To identify the most frequent findings in the placentas by associating them with a viral antigen and correlating them with the infection of newborns. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-five placentas from HIV- positive pregnant women were pathologically and immunohistochemically analyzed with the use of p24 antibody in the period from 1992 to1997 in accordance with the routine laboratory testing from the Anatomopathological Department - Hospital Universitário Antônio Pedro - Universidade Federal Fluminense (APD/HUAP/UFF). RESULTS: The microscopic alterations detected in all cases, including those with vertical transmission, were arteriopathy in the fetal blood circulation, chorioamnionitis, perivillous fibrin deposition, syncytial knotting, villous edema and villous immaturity. No specific macroscopic or histopathological changes were found in these placentas. The neonatal infection was observed in five cases. Vertical transmission was identified in two out of five placentas that had low weight for the respective stage of pregnancy. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed 14 positive cases, two of which showed vertical transmission. The viral protein was not identified in 10 out of 14 placentas from patients who had been medicated with zidovudine (AZT). CONCLUSION: Our study has contributed to the anatomopathological investigation into placentas from HIV-positive patients, although p24 expression per se did not allow a definite and early diagnosis of the vertical transmission.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the supplementation of linseed as an omega-3 fatty acid supplier on the functional capacity of jumping horses. 6 horses disposed in two 3 x 3 balanced Latin squares were used. The treatments consisted of increasing levels of linseed mixed with flour and linseed oil in a ratio of 75:25, respectively, resulting in 0g (control), 60g and 120g on a daily basis per horse. The horses were supplemented for 30 days. Physical activity was jumping at riding class level. The functional parameters measured were lameness index, stride length and joint metacarpophalangeal (MCP) biometry (circumference and flexion angle). A significant linseed supplementation effect for doses of 60 and 120g was observed on the lameness index. Feeding 120g of linseed increased stride length while trotting (P<0.05). An increment of 0.5cm on MCP circumference was found in horses that received the control diet when compared to those horses that consumed 120g of linseed. Thus, supplementation of jumping horses with 120g/day of linseed promoted greater stride length at a trot and reduced swelling in the metacarpophalangeal joint, improving their functional capabilities.
