The iron and manganese ions are present in a high frequency in water source in Brazil. Despite of the frequency in which such problems occur, the way the problem is faced is still traditional, i.e. focusing on oxidative process instead of solid-liquid separation. The treatment can be very simple, in groundwater, or very complex, when metals are present together with organic matter in water. This article presents a review of principal works besides some important aspects about iron and manganese in natural water, occurrence, forms in natural water, organic complexes, oxidation and removal applying solid/liquid separation processes. Further, a new strategy for iron and manganese removal is presented. The information described does not exhaust the matter, so a large bibliography was cited at the end of the article.

Introduction: In dentistry, alveolar bone resorption is a limiting factor in the well being of individuals directly interfering in the stomatognathic system, causing problems in the context of overall health. Aiming to promote biological methods that can stimulate bone regeneration, several biomimetic strategies have been developed by the use of diverse materials possible to the bone matrix, culminating in the development of techniques that promote such repair. Objective: This work is a comparative study of the performance of films made with latex as occlusive membrane for Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) procedure in three preparations: Latex preserved in ammonia, produced by Latex rubber clones IAN873 and PR255 polymerized immediately after collection and without use ammonia as a preservative. Methods: Sixty Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups of 15 animals in which bone defects of critical size (8mm diameter) were made surgically in the skull. Group A was treated by GBR through the membrane latex preserved with ammonia, Group B received the membrane made of latex from IAN873, Group C, the membrane clone PR255 and group D was not treated by GBR. After a period of 7, 15 and 50 days, 5 animals from each group were euthanized, and specimens containing bone defect collected for microscopic examination (descriptive histology and histomorphometry). Results: The results showed that after 50 days there was bone formation in higher proportions in group D (p <0.05, ANOVA followed by Tukey), suggesting that further experiments should be conducted to conclude about the presence of ammonia and the influence of kind of rubber. Conclusion: GOR is a procedure proven effective in the treatment of bone defects. Therefore, further experiments should be conducted to reach a conclusion regarding the presence of ammonia in the latex composition for the manufacture of membranes, as well as the difference induced by the species of rubber.

Pesquisas na robótica móvel tem sido impulsionadas pelos avanços tecnológicos. Existem frentes de pesquisas que abordam diferentes aspectos e desafios da robótica móvel, dentre os quais é possível citar tópicos como locomoção, navegação e arquitetura de controle. Esse crescimento em pesquisas acarreta uma maior necessidade por plataformas de robôs que possam ser destinadas à pesquisa e também para fins educacionais. Este trabalho propõe uma alternativa de plataforma de robô móvel de baixo custo, de arquitetura de hardware, software e controle aberta, destinada a atividades de propósitos gerais. A plataforma almeja a facilitação e flexibilização do processo de desenvolvimento de estudos e aplicações robóticas por meio de uma interface de comunicação simplificada e pela abstração da heterogeneidade dos dispositivos periféricos de hardware, sendo assim, capaz de oferecer maior liberdade em relação às linguagens de programação, paradigmas de controle e tecnologias de controle.

Mastits is considered uncommon disease in mares. Streptococcus equi, Staphylococcus sp., Corynebacterium sp., Actinobacillus sp., Nocardia sp. and enterobacterias are major microorganisms involved in equine mammary infections. The disease is commonly related to traumatic lesions in mammary glands and teats. Edema, fibrosis, masses to palpation of glands, and viscous to seropurulent milk are mainly clinical signs observed in affected animals. The diagnosis is based on clinical exam of mammary glands and microbiological culture of the milk. There are no standard to use of indirect exams on diagnosis, including California Mastits Test and Somatic Cell Count. Systemic antimicrobials are recommended in therapy, based on previous “in vitro” susceptibility microbiological test. No specific control measures are indicated in equine mastits. The present study reviewed the mastits in mares, with emphasis to etiology, epidemiology findings, clinical manifestation, diagnosis, treatment and control aspects.
