Periodontitis is an infectious disease characterized by the secretion of a variety of inflammatory mediators that lead to destruction of tooth supporting tissues, including the possible loss of alveolar bone, in association with infection with multiple species of bacteria. It is estimated that more than 400 species colonize the biofilm and some oral species related to periodontal disease is present in the subgingival including P. gingivalis, T. forsythia and T. denticola. However, other organisms may be related of this disease, as Filifactor allocis and Prevotella tannerae. These microorganisms and subproducts such as endotoxins released into the extracellular lead to the stimulation of metalloproteinase inducer glycoprotein (EMMPRIN, CD-147), which stimulates the release of MMPs by host cells, like fibroblasts and endothelial cells, thus leading to tissue destruction. The objective of this study was to detect F. allocis, P. tannerae, T. denticola and the glycoprotein EMMPRIN (CD-147) and its correlation with MMP-2 and MMP-9 in subgingival fluid samples of patients with chronic periodontitis. Fluids were collected from healthy and disease subgingival sites of 20 healthy individuals before basic periodontal treatment and after of 60 days of treatment. Their DNAs were extracted and portions of the 16S gene were amplified and performed conventional PCR. For immunological analysis and quantification of EMMPRIN (CD-147), MMP-2 and MMP-9 was used ELISA-Sandwich. Results demonstrated that the disease group showed significantly high amounts of T. denticola, F. alocis and P. tannerae when compared with health sites. MMP-2 and MMP-9 were detected in high concentrations with statistically significantly reduction after periodontal treatment to MMP-2, but without correlation with EMMPRIN.

Introduction: One of the violence types more observed against children is the physical abuse, which produces many types of traumatic injuries. Contusions are common trauma signs and may indicate aggression when frequently present in locations where accidental injuries are rare. Contusions in skin undergo color changes with the passage of time, and such change in color is called “spectrum of bruise colors of Legrand du Saulle”. Thus, it is possible to estimate the age of the lesion based on the evaluation of color. Injuries caused by child abuse often reach regions of head, face and neck, because they are exposed and easily accessible. Therefore, the dentist is responsible with regard to the diagnosis and the actions to be undertaken against the cases of child abuse. Objective: To present and discuss the significance of the spectrum of bruise colors as a considerable visible trace in suspicion of violence against children and adolescents, during dentists’ clinical routine. Literature review: The study of the “spectrum of bruise colors of Legrand du Saulle” refers to the estimation of the age of the injury, in respect to the color change. The application of this study is of great value for identify if a lesion occurred from a single incident or from multiple incidents, especially in cases where it occurs in the same region of the body, indicative of repetitive trauma. Conclusion: The spectrum of bruise colors is very important for health professionals, such as dentists, for the identification or suspicion of cases of abuse against children and adolescents. As great part of the lesions originated of abuse involve the areas of head and neck, it is unacceptable that these professionals are unaware of the basic signs to help in early diagnosis, which is the case of the colors of the lesions. However, concerning the chronology of the spectrum of bruise colors, it is not possible to establish rigorous times.

Food contamination caused by enteric pathogens is a major cause of diarrheal disease worldwide, resulting in high morbidity and mortality and significant economic losses. Bacteria are important agents of foodborne diseases, particularly diarrheagenic Escherichia coli. The present study assessed the genetic diversity and antimicrobial resistance of E. coli isolates from pasteurized milk processed in 21 dairies in northwestern State of Parana, Brazil. The 95 E. coli isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing according to the recommendations of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute and assessed genotypically by Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus-Polymerase Chain Reaction (ERIC-PCR). The highest rate of resistance was observed for cephalothin (55.78%). ERIC-PCR revealed high genetic diversity, clustering the 95 bacterial isolates into 90 different genotypic patterns. These results showed a heterogeneous population of E. coli in milk samples produced in the northwestern region of Parana and the need for good manufacturing practices throughout the processing of pasteurized milk to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses.

We examined the effects of beta-pompilidotoxin (beta-PMTX), a neurotoxin derived from wasp venom. on synaptic transmission in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Using hippocampal slice preparations of rodents, we made both extracellular and intracellular recordings from the CA1 pyramidal neurons in response to stimulation of the Schaffer collateral/commissural fibers. Application of 5-10 muM beta-PMTX enhanced excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) but suppressed the fast component of the inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs). In the presence of 10 muM bicuculline, beta-PMTX potentiated EPSPs that were composed of both non-NMDA and NMDA receptor-mediated potentials. Potentiation of EPSPs was originated by repetitive firings of the prosynaptic axons, causing Summation of EPSPs. In the presence of 10 muM CNQX and 50 muM APV, beta-PMTX suppressed GABA(A) receptor-mediated fast IPSPs but retained GABA(B) receptor-mediated slow IPSPs. Our results suggest that beta-PMTX facilitates excitatory synaptic transmission by a presynaptic mechanism and that it causes overexcitation followed by block of the activity of some population of interneurons which regulate the activity of GABA(A) receptors. The development of a new methodology for the construction of very efficient flow cells for mercury detection by potentiometric stripping analysis, employing the thin gold layer of recordable CDs as working electrode is reported. This new source of electrodes (CDtrodes) show very attractive performance, similar to that obtained with commercial gold electrodes, with superior versatility. The low cost of this new source of gold electrodes allows a frequent replacement of the electrode, avoiding cumbersome clean-up treatments. Various experimental parameters have been optimized to yield low detection limits (0.25 ng/mL of mercury for 5 min deposition at 0.3 V) and good precision (standard deviation of 1.9% was obtained for 15 repetitive measurements using 10 ng/mL of mercury). Standard curves were found to be linear over the range of 0.5-100 μg L-1 of mercury. The flow cells developed were used for the quantification of mercury in oceanic and tap water. © Springer-Verlag 2000.
