The use of markers distributed all long the genome may increase the accuracy of the predicted additive genetic value of young animals that are candidates to be selected as reproducers. In commercial herds, due to the cost of genotyping, only some animals are genotyped and procedures, divided in two or three steps, are done in order to include these genomic data in genetic evaluation. However, genomic evaluation may be calculated using one unified step that combines phenotypic data, pedigree and genomics. The aim of the study was to compare a multiple-trait model using only pedigree information with another using pedigree and genomic data. In this study, 9,318 lactations from 3061 buffaloes were used, 384 buffaloes were genotyped using a Illumina bovine chip (Illumina Infinium (R) bovineHD BeadChip). Seven traits were analyzed milk yield (MY), fat yield (FY), protein yield (PY), lactose yield (LY), fat percentage (F%), protein percentage (P%) and somatic cell score (SCSt). Two analyses were done: one using phenotypic and pedigree information (matrix A) and in the other using a matrix based in pedigree and genomic information (one step, matrix H). The (co) variance components were estimated using multiple-trait analysis by Bayesian inference method, applying an animal model, through Gibbs sampling. The model included the fixed effects of contemporary groups (herd-year-calving season), number of milking (2 levels), and age of buffalo at calving as (co) variable (quadratic and linear effect). The additive genetic, permanent environmental, and residual effects were included as random effects in the model. The heritability estimates using matrix A were 0.25, 0.22, 0.26, 0.17, 0.37, 0.42 and 0.26 and using matrix H were 0.25, 0.24, 0.26, 0.18, 0.38, 0.46 and 0.26 for MY, FY, PY, LY, % F, % P and SCCt, respectively. The estimates of the additive genetic effect for the traits were similar in both analyses, but the accuracy were bigger using matrix H (superior to 15% for traits studied). The heritability estimates were moderated indicating genetic gain under selection. The use of genomic information in the analyses increases the accuracy. It permits a better estimation of the additive genetic value of the animals.

This study evaluated the prevalence and counting parasitism of different species of helminths of sheep from the micro-region of Jaboticabal of Sao Paulo state. For this, 66 animals naturally infected, four to 36 months of age, raised in pasture, were selected. The results of necropsy revealed the presence of seven genera and 12 species with the following prevalence and mean count: Haemonchus contortus: 100.0% (2947.2); Trichostrongylus colubriformis: 90.9% (3048.8); Cooperia curticei: 56.0% (256.5); Oesophagostomum columbianum: 48.4% (36.0); Cooperia punctata: 30.3% (94.5); Trichostrongylus axei: 22.7% (26.5); Strongyloides papillosus: 19.6% (83.0), Haemonchus contortus (L4): 7.5% (17.2), Cooperia pectinata: 10.6% (12.9), Trichuris ovis: 10.6 % (0.6); Cooperia spatulata 4.5% (0.3); Capillaria bovis: 4.5% (0.1). The mean parasitism of helminthswas 6524.7 per animal. Haemonchus contortus (adults and L4) and Trichostrongylus colubriformis corresponded to 45.4% and 46.7% of the average worm burden totally, respectively. Based in the results obtained in this study, can be concluded that the two most abundant species of helminths and important, the micro-region of Jaboticabal are Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Haemonchus contortus, and these two species amounted to 92.1% of the distribution percentage of helminths collected from all animals. These results demonstrate the importance of conducting a counts of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) in the herds of this region when FAMACHA is used on a particular property, since this method control does not allow to diagnostic the damage/clinical signs in animals infected by T. colubriformis, because this specie does not have hematophagism habit on animals.

The broad spectrum of endectocides and the easy use mode of their pour-on formulations are factors that have stimulated a higher frequency of use these drugs in cattle. In this study was evaluated the efficacy of ivermectin pour-on using the dose of 500mcgkg(-1), against nematodes in naturally infected cattle from different herds. Twelve calves were brought from each of the four farms selected. All the 48 calves used showed mean of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) greater than 500 considering three consecutive counts. Subsequently, animals from each herd were divided into two groups of six animals each, one treated pour-on with ivermectin 500mcgkg(-1) and other kept as untreated control. Calves were euthanized 14 days after treatment for counting the endoparasites. Ivermectin showed null effect against H. placei in all the herds evaluated. The drug was also ineffective against C. punctata in the herds from Jaboticabal, SP and Formiga, MG, and reached efficacy of 75.8% and 58.4% in herds from Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, SP and Sao Sebastiao do Para so, MG, respectively. Efficacies of 94.2% (Jaboticabal), 0.0% (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo), 94.2% (Formiga) and 39.2% (Sao Sebastiao do Para so) were detectedagainstO. radiatum. Based on these results obtained on the present study, the four populations of Haemonchus placei and Cooperia punctata evaluated were resistant to ivermectin pour-on using a dose of 500mcgkg(-1). Ivermectin-resistant strains of Oesophagostomum radiatum were found in two of the four herds evaluated.

The length of the post-partum anoestrous interval affects reproductive efficiency in many tropical beef cattle herds. In this study, results from genome-wide association studies (Experiment 1: GWAS) and gene expression (Experiment 2: microarray) were combined in a systems approach to reveal genetic markers, genes and pathways underlying the physiology of post-partum anoestrus in tropically adapted cattle. The microarray study measured the expression of 13,964 genes in the hypothalamus of Brahman cows. A total of 366 genes were differentially expressed (DE) in the post-partum period, when acyclic cows were compared to cows that had resumed ovarian cycles. Associated markers (P < 0.05) from a high density GWAS pointed to 2829 genes that were associated with post-partum anoestrous interval (PPAI) in two populations of beef cattle: Brahman and Tropical composite. Together the experiments provided evidence for 63 genes that are likely to influence the resumption of ovulation post-partum in tropically adapted beef cattle. Functional annotation analysis revealed that some of the 63 genes have known roles in hormonal activity, energy balance and neuronal synapse plasticity. Polymorphisms within candidate genes identified by this systems approach could have biological significance in post-partum anoestrus and help select Zebu (Bos indicus) influenced cattle with genetic potential for shorter post-partum anoestrus. Peripartum or Transition Period is, generally, defined as the period between three weeks pre-calving and three weeks after calving. It is a critical and crucial stage to the cow’s health and to economic profitability during the lactation. During this phase the cows experience several changes that prepare them to calve and milk yield. These changes contribute to metabolic disorders’ incidence, and can lead to reproductive function and milk yield reduction, and increase the herd’s disposal. This paper aimed to review the peripartum metabolic diseases, which includes Ketosis, Hypocalcemia, Hepatic Steatosis, Ruminal Acidosis and Lameness

With the increasing development of the brazilian sheep production, the producer was forced to achieve higher production rates. The use of artificial insemination has been shown as an important biotechnological tool in animal breeding. Among the various existing techniques, the superficial cervical insemination with fresh semen is demonstrating fertility rates between 70 and 80% (AISEN, 2008), in addition to its applicability, it does not require sophisticated equipment or manpower to highly specialized implementing these plans greater possibility in your job to maximize reproduction and greater dissemination of superior genetic material on the property. This study aims to address aspects of artificial insemination with fresh semen in sheep and its applicability in commercial herds biotechnology as a tool in assisted reproduction

Tuberculosis due the large number of victims that come attacking in recent years has become a major concern in the World Health Organization. It is caused by a bacterium that is becoming increasingly resistant to drugs, because it requires long periods in treatment that are not always followed correctly. AIDS has contributed much in recent years with increased morbidity and mortality of Mycobacterium. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) of Brazil in 2001 created the National Program of Control and Eradication of Animal Brucellosis and Tuberculosis (PNCEBT) establishing guidelines such as: sets the method to diagnose, control and certify herds free of disease. Joining the program is voluntary

The age which heifers reach puberty depend on factors like genetics, environment and nutrition. Puberty in heifers can be defined as the onset of reproductive competence, the ability to ovulate a fertile oocyte with an estrous behavior and development of a corpus luteum with normal lifespan. The metabolic signals that trigger puberty are not yet fully defined. In Brazil, where most beef cattle are zebu, the age at puberty is very advanced, mainly these animals are feed with a poor diet. Many researches are trying to discover the metabolic signals that trigger puberty and anticipate better economic return in breeding farms. It has been demonstrated that the cascade of endocrine events that culminate in puberty can be hastened by an alternative management scheme that involves increased nutrient intake between 3 and 7 months of life. Different diet concentrations, different products and by-products have been used in research to achieve puberty early (less than 300 days of age). The hormonal induction of puberty, especially with the use of progestagens, has been developed in heifers as an alternative tool to improve reproductive efficiency in herds, increasing the amount of pregnant heifers in breeding season
