Titanium alloys are hoped to be used much more for applications as implant materials in the medical and dental fields because of their basic properties, such as biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and specific strength compared with other metallic implant materials. Thus, the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy that has recently been developed for biomedical use, that is, primarily developed for orthopaedic use, is to be studied in this paper, for application in dental implants. The biocompatibility test in vivo was carried out in dogs and the osseointegration was verified through histological analysis of the samples of the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy with and without hydroxyapatite coating that were inserted in the alveoli. Within the controlled conditions the samples did not show any toxic effects on the cells. (C) 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

This study was conducted to observe the response of dogs' dental pulp to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and a calcium hydroxide cement when used as pulp capping materials. After the pulps of 30 teeth were exposed, they were capped with either MTA or a calcium hydroxide cement. Histological analysis was performed 2 months after treatment. Results showed a healing process with complete tubular dentin bridge formation and no inflammation in any of the pulps capped with MTA. on the other hand, only five specimens from the calcium hydroxide cement group formed a complete dentin bridge. In this experimental group, pulp inflammation was observed in all but three cases. In conclusion, MTA exhibited better results than the calcium hydroxide cement for the capping of the pulp in dogs.

We evaluated the effect of a mouth-rinse prepared using Lippia sidoides essential oil (EO) in dogs with marginal gingivitis. German Shepherd dogs were distributed in two groups: control (control mouth-rinse) and EO (EO mouth-rinse). Both mouth-rinses were applied on the dogs' teeth every 2 days for 2 weeks. At day 0 and day 15, the scores for plaque-bacteria (P), calculus (C), gingivitis (G) and the inflammatory infiltrate (INF) were evaluated blindly. The results were analyzed by the Wilcoxon signed-rank and Mann-Whitney tests (P less than or equal to 0.05). P, C, G, and INF did not show any alteration in the control group, while in the EO group there were significant reductions in these scores. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Tick-bite naive guinea pigs were inoculated three times with Rhipicephalus sanguineus gut or salivary gland extracts and saponin as adjuvant. Dogs were inoculated three times with gut extract only as this fraction induced a more efficient resistance in guinea pigs (lower tick recovery and lower engorged female weights). Freund's adjuvant and saponin were used as adjuvants for the immunisation of dogs. Freund's adjuvant was used to enhance cellular immunity. The highest level of resistance in dogs was induced by the immunisation with gut extract and Freund's adjuvant. Many female ticks from dogs immunised this way engorged fully but died prior to oviposition. Resistant guinea pigs and dogs seemed to trigger different immune mechanisms against R. sanguineus ticks as damage to parasites also differed. A major role for cellular immunity in the resistance of dogs against R. sanguineus ticks is suggested. Resistance mechanisms against R. sanguineus ticks is discussed.

This study was conducted to observe the healing process in dogs' teeth with apical periodontitis after root canal treatment in one or two appointments. Premolars and anterior dogs' teeth had their root canals opened to the oral environment for 6 months before being treated. After root canal negotiation they were filled by the lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha points and Sealapex in one appointment or after a dressing with calcium hydroxide for 7 and 15 days. Six months after the treatment the animals were killed and the tissues prepared for histomorphological analysis. Scores attributed to the different histomorphological events were submitted to statistical analysis, which resulted in ranking the experimental groups from the best to the worst in the following way: (a) calcium hydroxide 14 days; (b) calcium hydroxide 7 days; and (c) one appointment. It was concluded that the use of a calcium hydroxide dressing helps to achieve better results (p < 0.01) than the treatment in one appointment.

A total of 163 dogs with neuromuscular, respiratory and/or gastrointestinal disorders, was admitted at the Veterinary Hospital, Federal University of Uberlandia, Brazil, and submitted to serology for Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum. Assays for T gondii included indirect haemagglutination (IHA), indirect fluorescent antibody (IFAT-Tg), immunoenzymatic (ELISA), and immunoblotting (IB-Tg). Assays for N, caninum included IFAT-Nc and immunoprecipitation (IP-Nc). Based on concordant results by three serological tests (IHA, IFAT-Tg and ELISA) for T gondii, and divergent results further confirmed by IB-Tg for reactivity to TgSAG1, the 163 sera were divided into two groups: 59 (36%) Tg-seropositive samples and 104 (64%) Tg-seronegative samples. Antibodies to Neospora were detected in 11 (6.7%) out of 163 analyzed dog sera, with 5 (3.1 %) samples reactive to both parasites (Tg+/Nc+), and 6 (3.7%) reactive only to Neospora (Tg-/Nc+). Antibodies only to T: gondii were found in 54 (33%) samples. Among the 11 Neospora-positive sera analyzed by IB-Tg, the five sera Tg+/Nc+ showed strong reactivity to Toxoplasma antigens, especially to TgSAG1 (p30). No reactivity was observed to TgSAG1 in the six samples Tg-/Nc+. By TP-Nc, two highly immunodominant antigens (29 and 35 kDa proteins) were recognized by all 11 IFAT-Nc positive sera. Our results suggest that the infection by N, caninum can be concomitantly present in dogs from this area, although less common, and therefore should be considered in the differential clinical diagnosis with T. gondii in dogs presenting neuromuscular, respiratory and/or gastrointestinal disorders. Objective Ocular conjunctivas of healthy dogs were studied by conjunctival impression cytology for evaluation of feasibility, protocol standardization, and normal cytologic pattern recognition of this technique.Animals studied Twenty healthy, adult, cross-breed dogs.Procedures Samples of the bulbar conjunctiva were collected after instillation of topical anesthetic drops at the ocular surface. Impression cytology was performed by applying asymmetric strips of Millipore filter on the superior temporal bulbar conjunctiva near the limbus. The filter strip was gently pressed against the conjunctiva for 5 s and removed with a peeling motion. Samples were immediately fixed in 95% ethyl alcohol, stained with periodic acid-Schiff and hematoxylin, and mounted on slides cover-slipped using synthetic resin. The slides were examined by light microscopy. Results Microscopic examination of the impressions revealed superficial, intermediate and basal epithelial cells arranged in sheets. Keratinized epithelial cells, goblet cells and leukocytes, as well as cellular debris and mucus were observed. Conclusions Feasibility of impression cytology for sampling the bulbar conjunctiva of the dog and the standardization the the proposed protocol was shown. The results allowed the recognition the the normal cytologic pattern of healthy conjunctivas in dogs.
