Studies have reported that alcohol may lead to imbalance in bone formation and resorption, however, its effects on osseointegration of titanium implants continues to be an inconclusive subject. In this context, the aim of this study was to make a biomechanical evaluation of the effect of abusive alcohol consumption on the removal torque of osseointegrated titanium implants. Male Wistar rats (n=30) were divided into two experimental groups (15 each) receiving only water (Control) or 36% alcohol solution oral administration. Thirty days later, all animals were submitted to titanium implant (2.2 mm x 4 mm) placement in the right and left tibiae. The surgical alveoli were prepared with a 2 mm drill mounted in a counter-angle hand-piece (20:1 ratio, 35 Ncm torque at 1200 rpm) under abundant cooling. Five animals from each group were euthanized at 15, 30, and 60 days. Tibiae were submitted to reverse torque analysis. Data obtained were submitted to statistical analysis by the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn Tests (p < 0.05). Animals in the alcohol group presented lower removal torque values when compared with control group animals for all periods tested (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that abusive alcohol consumption can reduce the removal torque of titanium implants placed in rat tibiae, suggesting that alcohol may interfere in the osseointegration process of titanium implants.

Titanium dental implants have been common practice in the dental office, which can increases the number of allergic reactions to this material. Objectives: to alert dental surgeons and specialists of this possible phenomenon through a literature review. Material and methods: an electronic search at PubMed was performed with the keywords “dental implants”, “titanium”, and “allergy” from January 1990 to May 2013. Only articles published in the English language were included. Letters to editor were excluded. Results: from the 22 initially retrieved articles, only 7 were included, being 4 clinical case reports and 3 experimental studies. For clinical cases, the reactions included edema, erythema, exfoliative cheilitis, and eczema. Regarding experimental studies, skin rash and dermatitis were reported. A patch test was not used in two clinical reports. Only one study used histological analysis to attest the lack of allergic reactions. Conclusion: within the limits of the available literature, allergic reactions to titanium dental implants are extremely rare and seem to be related to the female gender. More controlled clinical studies are necessary to elucidate this question.

Introduction: As a new alternative in the complementary treatment lasers teem different systems were employed in the decontamination of dental surfaces implants however, some systems have caused significant changes in its surface. Purpose: Analyze by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) the effects of laser irradiation of Er,Cr: YSGG on different surfaces of titanium. Material and method: Study of 20 titanium discs, and 10 Machined Surface (MS) and 10 surfaces treated with acid (AC). The 10 discs with the same treatment were divided into two groups with five units each, the irradiation was performed in powers of 1 W and 2 W. Result: Showed that the irradiation with 1 W of power resulted in no significant morphological changes in the MS-irradiated compared to non-irradiated surfaces. In MS surfaces, minor changes were observed in the increase of 1000× when compared to non-irradiated surface. With 2 W of power, there were no significant morphological changes in the MS, compared to non-irradiated areas. In AC some changes were observed in the increase of X 1000, showing areas of wear suggestive of treatment and some areas with melting point. Conclusion: Considering the results and the parameters used in this study it was concluded that the Er, Cr: YSGG irradiation can be used for the machined surfaces of implants, but in acid-treated surfaces irradiation parameters should be more controlled.

É descrita a invenção de um método de modificação da superfície 5 de ligas de titânio empregando a oxidação anódica em ligas de Ti- 30Ta e Ti-7,5Mo para a obtenção de nanotubos perpendiculares ao substrato com diâmetro de 80-120 nm e comprimento de 100 nm-500 nm.

In heterogeneous catalysis, numerous elements such as titanium and iron have been studied as nanoscale catalysts, but little is known about the use of niobium in nanocatalysis. The nanostructured particles have intrinsic and different physicochemical characteristics with great potential for use in industrial scale. Brazil having the largest known worldwide niobium reserve has the great challenge of creating pioneering technologies with the metal. Biodiesel is an alternative fuel and renewable substitute for regular diesel. Being biodegradable, non-toxic and have CO2 emissions lower than regular diesel, it contributes to the environment and to the independence from oil. The aim of this work was initially synthesize nanoscale particles of niobium pentoxide (Nanospheres, nanorods, nanofibers, nanocubes) from the sol-gel technique. The characterization of different nanoscale structures obtained was performed using different analytical techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The synthesized nanometer niobium oxide will be used as a heterogeneous catalyst in biodiesel synthesis from commercial soybean oil, checking in detail what the effect of morphology is presented (Nanospheres, nanorods, nanofibers, nanocubes) in the yield of biodiesel synthesis, comparing these results with those already described in literature for the amorphous niobium oxide and other oxide catalysts. Mira are pulsating variable stars in advanced stages of evolution. Their atmospheres are sources of intense absorption bands attributed to molecular titanium monoxide (TiO). It has been suggested that the abundance of TiO reaches its maximum value near the minimum light. In this sense, the study of the processes of formation and destruction of TiO in circumstellar envelopes of Mira stars, not only allows us to understand the physical and chemical processes that occur in these environments, as it allows to verify the correlation between the abundance of TiO and its light curve. However, the main mechanisms of formation and destruction of TiO are poorly known and, consequently, the possible correlation between the abundance of this species and the light curve. In these sense, we studied the main processes of formation and destruction of titanium monoxide in molecular layers of Mira atmospheres and determined its temporal variation as function of the stellar radius. The TiO profile along the radius was expected for the different stellar phase, however its abundance is not enough to explain the light curve. The reasons behind it are discussed in details
