Literature mentions propyl gallate (PG) as a non-toxic synthetic antioxidant that can be used as a food additive due to its high tolerance to heat. It is important to understand the thermal properties and to identify the decomposition products of this substance, since it has been reported to be thermally stable at temperatures as high as 300 °C. Simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry-photovisual (DSC-photovisual), coupled thermogravimetry-infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) analyses and spectroscopic techniques were used to study the food additive PG. The TG-DTA curves, which were performed with the aid of DSC-photovisual, provided information concerning the thermal stability and decomposition profiles of the compound. From the TG-FTIR coupled techniques, it was possible to identify n-propanol as a possible volatile compound released during the thermal decomposition of the antioxidant. A complete spectroscopic characterization in the ultraviolet, visible, near and middle infrared regions was performed in order to understand the spectroscopic properties of PG.

Four new heterobimetallic metal carbonyls were synthesized by the reaction of [W(CO)4(bipy)] (1) with copper(I) compounds leading to species with the general formula [W(CO)4(bipy)(CuX)] (X = Cl, N3, ClO4, BF4) (2-5). The metal carbonyl compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and UV -visible electronic spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The IR data for 2-5 show carbonyl stretching band patterns similar to compound 1 ; ie they exhibit the same number of bands. The UV - vis results show a dissociation reaction generating the starting compound 1 and CuX as consequence of a weak interaction between 1 and CuX. Thermal decomposition mechanisms as well as the thermal stability are influenced by the CuX fragments. The thermal stability decreases in the order [W(CO)4(bipy)] > [W(CO)4(bipy)(CuCl)] > [W(CO)4(bipy) (CuBF4)]. The X-ray results show the formation of WO3, CuWO4, Cu2O and CuO as final decomposition products.

The compound obtained via state solid reaction of the La2O3 and SrO oxides and expose the room atmosphere shows the crystallographic data of the compound reported as La2SrOx. However, thermogravimetric, differential thermal analysis and XRD with controlled temperature indicated that the stoichiometry of the compound is 2La(OH)(3)-SrCO3, which structural parameters were determined by using the Rietveld method. It was verified that when the compound exposed at room atmosphere, the mixture oxide absorbs H2O and CO2 producing hydroxide and carbonate of lanthanum and strontium, respectively, which thermal decomposition occurs by the same steps, producing the La2O3-SrO.

The dimeric compound [Pd(dmba)(μ-Cl)]2 (1) (dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine) reacts with KX, in methanol/acetone, affording the analogous dimeric pseudohalide-bridged species [Pd(dmba)(X)]2 [X = NCO(2), SCN(3), CN(4)]. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, NMR and thermogravimetric analysis. The IR data for 2-4 showed bands typical of coordinated pseudohalide ligands indicating clearly the occurrence of the exchange reaction. Their thermal behavior was investigated and suggested that their thermal stability is influenced by the bridging ligand. The thermal stability decreased in the order [Pd(dmba)(μ-SCN)]2>[Pd(dmba)(μ-Cl)] 2>[Pd(dmba)(;u-NCO)]2>[Pd(dmba)(μ-CN)]2. The X-ray results showed the formation of PdO as final decomposition product. © 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and DFT theoretical calculations were used to study benzamide. The TG-DTA and DSC curves provided information concerning the melting point, evaporation and thermal stability of the compound. Using the FTIR technique it was possible to confirm the evaporation of the compound with no degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) at the 6-311++G (3df, 3dp) level, provided information regarding the energies involved in HOMO-LUMO transitions and the chemical stability of the compound.

This paper reports an investigation on the effect of thermal activation of kaolinite. It is well known that during calcinations (400-650 degrees C), kaolinite loses the OH lattice water and is transformed into metakaolinite or amorphous material. Arsenic is trace element that is toxic to animals including humans. The adsorption of arsenic on kaolinite was investigated at varying pH and thermal pretreatment. Calcination of sample is carried out at 650 degrees C for 3 h. The decomposition of kaolinite is recorded using methods of thermal analysis. The resultant product is identified by XRD. Laboratory experiments were conducted examining the effect of arsenic by thermally modified kaolinite. The Langmuir isotherm was used to describe arsenite and arsenate sorption by the calcined kaolinite. The equilibrium parameters used were based on experimental data obtained for the dynamic adsorption process of arsenic. Removal of arsenate using natural kaolinite was satisfactory, whereas arsenic was not removed by adsorption with thermally modified kaolinite. Moreover, the adsorption of arsenic by kaolinite and metakaolinite decreases with increasing pH.

The possibility of thermal treatment plants of municipal wastewater is an alternative solution for the final disposition of the sludge produced on small cities as Barueri, a small town of São Paulo State, Brazil. Combustion and pyrolysis of that municipal waste, occurring respectively in air and nitrogen, have been studied by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The main steps of each case were analyzed and Kissinger plots were used to estimate respective activation energies. DTG peaks are more indicated to represent the condition of maximum reaction rates than DTA peaks.

Blend films (free-standing) containing 20% in volume of polyaniline (PANI) in 80% of natural rubber (NR) were fabricated by casting in three different ways: (1) adding PANI-EB (emeraldine base) dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to the latex (NRL), (2) adding PANI-EB dissolved in in-cresol to NR dissolved in xylol (NRD), (3) overlaying the surface of a pure NR cast film with a PANI layer grown by in situ polymerization (NRO). All the films were immersed into HCl solution to achieve the primary doping (protonation) of PANI before the characterization. The main goal here was to investigate the elastomeric and electrical conductivity properties for each blend, which may be applied as pressure and deformation sensors in the future. The characterization was carried out by optical microscopy, dc conductivity, vibrational spectroscopy (infrared absorption and Raman scattering), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and tensile stress-strain curves. The results suggest that the NRL blend is the most suitable in terms of mechanical and electrical properties required for applications in pressure and deformation sensors: a gain of conductivity without losing the elastomeric property of the rubber. Sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) is an industrial waste that contains silicon and aluminum oxides as the major components and iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium oxides as the main minor components. In this paper, SCBA from one Brazilian factory was characterized and tested for its influence on the ceramic properties of clay/ash ceramic probes. Prismatic probes were pressed (18 MPa) using a ceramic mass mixed with 0%, 5%, 8%, and 10% ash. The probes were fired at temperatures between 800 degrees and 1200 degrees C. X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, thermal analysis (differential thermal analysis, thermo-gravimetric analysis/differential thermogravimetric analysis), and tests for texture (particle-size analysis), flexural strength, and linear shrinkage were carried out to characterize the samples. The results showed that the amount of ash to be incorporated will depend on mainly the composition of clay but also ash, and indicated that the clay used in this work can incorporate up to 10% weight of ash to produce solid bricks. The results also showed an improvement in ceramic/ash properties up to sintering temperatures higher than 1000 degrees C.
