The correct distinguishment of microorganisms involved in the periodontal disease pathogen, it is important in the understanding of its progression and adequate treatment planning. Considering this fact, some molecular methods of identification and quantification were developed and are extremely sensitive and precise in the characterization of different bacteria species. The present study aimed to realize a literature review, including studies that realized a comparative analysis between bacterial culture and real time PCR methods in the identification of pathogens. The bacterial culture method can possibly identify new microorganisms and realize antibiotics sensitivity tests. The real time PCR is a microbiologic test that identifies and quantifies bacterial species, through gene amplification of predetermined DNA fragments, with high sensitivity and specificity, and need a shorter operation time of the operator when compared to the bacterial culture method. In this way, to determine a specific diagnostic test, should be considered not only its precision in the identification of microorganisms, but the cost-benefit relationship as well.

The aim of this in vitro study was to comparatively evaluate the mesio and distal furcation entrance measurements of first maxillary premolar. The measurements were compared with different curette blades. A caliper was used by an examinator to acquire the measurements of root trunk (TR); 1 mm (D1) and 2 mm (D2) both below the furcation entrance. For this study Gracey, Mini Gracey, Padua Lima (PL) and Goldman Fox 4 curettes (Millenium) were selected. Measurements of DT - total distance of the active blade length, DI - width of the active blade, DM - width of the medium part of the active blade were obtained for the curettes. The measurements were obtained in both the coronary face and in the lateral face. The data TR, D1 and D2 presented normal distribution and were statistically analyzed by paired t-test. Statistically significant differences were found in the mesial root trunk region (TR) of both premolars. The mean of the measurements was greater than the distal. Mean and standard deviation were obtained, and both Gracey and Mini Gracey showed mean measurements compatible with the closer furcation entrance (D1 - 1 mm). Goldman Fox 4 showed adaptation only in the mesial face, and Padua Lima showed no access to any of the faces. Thereby it is concluded that the access of the furcation is narrow (D1). The mesial face of the root trunk (TR) showed mean measurement greater than distal face. Gracey and Mini Gracey curettes demonstrated to be compatible for both faces, mesial and distal of the first maxillary premolars studied.

Smoking is one of the most important risk factors for periodontal disease. Increased destruction of periodontal tissues has been observed in smokers. Studies show changes caused by different cigarette components, morphological, microbiological and immunological alterations which could lead to clinical changes. However, the pathophysiology of smoking on periodontal tissues are not completely understood. Therefore, this article aims to present a review of the literature addressing the changes on the periodontal tissues caused by the main components of the smoke observed in recent studies.

Abstract A fuzzy linguistic model based on the Mamdani method with input variables, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, temperature and wind obtained from CETESB with two membership functions each was built to predict the average hospitalization time due to cardiovascular diseases related to exposure to air pollutants in São José dos Campos in the State of São Paulo in 2009. The output variable is the average length of hospitalization obtained from DATASUS with six membership functions. The average time given by the model was compared to actual data using lags of 0 to 4 days. This model was built using the Matlab v. 7.5 fuzzy toolbox. Its accuracy was assessed with the ROC curve. Hospitalizations with a mean time of 7.9 days (SD = 4.9) were recorded in 1119 cases. The data provided revealed a significant correlation with the actual data according to the lags of 0 to 4 days. The pollutant that showed the greatest accuracy was sulfur dioxide. This model can be used as the basis of a specialized system to assist the city health authority in assessing the risk of hospitalizations due to air pollutants.
