Undoped and Eu3+ doped monohydrate strontium oxalate samples were precipitated under ultrasound and conventional stirring and were heated at different temperatures. All samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XDR), infrared spectra (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Monohydrate, dehydrate oxalates and carbonate particles are ellipsoids indicating a topotatic process. Particle size decrease is observed when ultrasound stirring and europium. doping are used and rehydration of strontium oxalate results in uniform hexagonal particle shape. An oxide and carbonate mixture is obtained from oxalates treated at 1050 degreesC and its suspension in water undergoes incomplete hydrolysis. The products from this incomplete hydrolysis present dendrite shape particles only when the former is precipitated under ultrasound stirring. In this process, surface energy is important for particle dispersion and ultrasound supplies activation energy to oxalate precursor. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Magnesium and zinc ferrites have been prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The organic material decomposition was studied by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The variation of crystalline phases and particle morphology with calcination temperature were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), respectively. The colors of the ferrites were evaluated using colorimetry. Magnesium ferrite crystallizes above 800 degrees C, presenting a yellow-orange color with a reflectance peak at the 600-650 nm range, while zinc ferrite crystallizes at 600 degrees C, with a reflectance peak between 650-700 nm, corresponding to the red-brick color.

Structural morphological studies in pure and Ce-doped tin dioxide nanoparticles with high stability against particle growth were performed in samples, obtained using the polymeric precursor method and prepared at different annealing temperatures. A Ce-rich surface layer was used to control the particle size and stabilize SnO2 against particle growth. The formation of this segregated layer can contribute to a decreased surface energy, acting in the driving force, or reducing the surface mobility. Only the cassiterite SnO2 phase was observed below 1000 degreesC and a secondary phase (CeO2) was observed for the Ce-doped SnO2 at temperatures higher than 1000 degreesC, when de-mixing process occurs. The evolution of crystallite size, microstrain and morphology of the nanoparticles with annealing temperatures was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), associated to Rietveld refinements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A new synthetic route for producing monodispersed and single crystal acicular goethite particles with small particle size and a high axial ratio adequate for use as a high density magnetic recording media precursor is reported. It essentially consists of the hydrolysis of alkaline Fe-III suspensions in the presence of carbonate by a three-step procedure, the formation of ferrihydrite primary particles, the ferrihydrite dissolution and nucleation of goethite, and the growth of the goethite nuclei. Changing the temperature of heating during ageing achieved a separation of the two last stages. X-Ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and surface area data have been used to determine the mechanism responsible for the formation of goethite particles with controlled size and shape. The best conditions to prepare monodispersed goethite particles have been established. The results show that uniform goethite particles of (a) 60 nm length with an axial ratio of 6 and (b) 230 nm length with a high axial ratio of 10, can be obtained by using an [OH]/[Fe] molar ratio of 0.35 in the initial suspensions with carbonate or sodium hydroxide, respectively. The [OH]/[Fe] molar ratio determines the particle size and elongation by controlling the hydrolysis reaction rate, while the carbonate ions promote a constant [OH] in the solution, keeping the pH around 10 during the entire synthesis process. This procedure, associated with the appropriate temperature control, leads, under certain conditions, to highly homogeneous goethite particles with sizes smaller than those obtained using sodium hydroxide with the same [OH]/[Fe] ratio.

The effect of milk processing on the microstructure of probiotic low-fat yogurt was studied. Skim milk fortified with skim milk powder was subjected to three treatments prior to innoculation: thermal treatment at 85 degrees C for 30 min, high hydrostatic pressure at 676 MPa for 5 min, and combined treatments of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) and heat. The processed milk was then fermented by using two different starter cultures containing Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bifidobacterium longum. The microstructure of heat-treated milk yogurt had fewer interconnected chains of irregularly shaped casein micelles, forming a network that enclosed the void spaces. on the other hand, microstructure of HHP yogurt had more interconnected clusters of densely aggregated protein of reduced particle size, with an appearance more spherical in shape, exhibiting a smoother more regular surface and presenting more uniform size distribution. The combined HHP and heat milk treatments led to compact yogurt gels with increasingly larger casein micelle clusters interspaced by void spaces, and exhibited a high degree of cross-linking. The rounded micelles tended to fuse and form small irregular aggregates in association with clumps of dense amorphous material, which resulted in improved gel texture and viscosity. A digital image processing and analysis method has been developed to classify shape and evaluate size and morphology parameters of corrosion pits. This method seems to be effective to analyze surfaces with low or high degree of pitting formation. Theoretical geometry data have been compared against experimental data obtained for titanium and aluminum alloys subjected to different corrosion tests. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Spherical silica nanoparticles were prepared using a basic amino acid catalysis route and the kinetics of the particles growth was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). L-arginine was used in the polar aqueous phase as the basic catalyst whereas the tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) was dissolved in the cyclohexane oil phase as the silicate monomer source. The SAXS measurements were taken in the aqueous phase at different reaction times. A high degree of monodispersity was clearly evidenced for the spherical nanoparticles as a result of the pronounced high-order oscillations observed in the SAXS curves. The SAXS data show that the particles number density remains unchanged since both the particle size as well as the volume fraction gradually increase. This process was discussed based on a reaction-controlled addition of monomer species at the surface of the growing particles. Consequently, the monodispersed spherical nanoparticles radius can as such be finely tuned from 7 to 12 nm by varying the reaction time. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

PLT (Pb1-xLaxTiO3, in which x = 0, 0.13 and 0.27) powders were successfully synthesized using the polymeric precursor method, based on the Pechini method. The polymeric precursors were calcined at temperatures ranging from 350 to 500 degrees C for 4 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed the evolution of the crystalline phase starting from the amorphous precursor. Thermogravimetric analyses (TG) and differential thermal analyses (DTA) of the powder precursors showed the influence of the pH on the elimination of organic material. PLT powders have a tendency to form agglomerates, what can be verified by comparing the values of the average particle sizes obtained by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, BET (D-BET) with the values of the average crystallite sizes obtained by XRD (D-XRD). Morphologies of SrTiO3 particles and agglomerates synthesized by the traditional Pechini route and by the polymer precipitation route were characterized by the nitrogen adsorption/desorption technique and by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A cluster structure of nanometric particles forming large agglomerates which are broken during pressing followed by cluster rearrangement was observed. The mean particle size is larger for SrTiO3 obtained by the Pechini route and is related to the precursor thermal decomposition and particle growth during calcination. The particle growth is controlled by neck growth among particles and further motion of the particle boundary. © 1995.

Lead titanate powders were synthesized through the use of polymeric precursors according to the Pechini Process. The polymeric precursor was calcined at temperatures ranging from 300 to 600°C for 1 or 2 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that lead titanate crystallizes from the precursor at temperatures as low as 400°C. No intermediate carbonate phase was detected by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) or by XRD. A powder with mean particle size of 150 nm was obtained after calcination of the precursor at 600°C for 1 h. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The original brachytic population 'Dent Single Cross Composite' (DSCC-br2br2) and a selection-derived sub-population with modified plant architecture (DSCC-br2br2-Lg3Lg3, selected for erect leaves), were evaluated for the following characteristics number of vascular bundles of greater and smaller size, total vascular tissue area (phloem and xylem), sustaining tissue area (vascular tissue plus sclerenchyma), phloem and sclerenchyma areas in apical, medial and basal portions from midclub and in apical and basal sheath regions (from second leaf above and first below ear insertion). These variables had different values for the five different sections studied in each leaf and these differences did not have the same pattern in the two DSCC populations (brachytic and with modified architecture). Selection for architectural modification caused some indirect foliar anatomical modifications. With the exception of the phloem and the vascular tissue areas in apical leaf and sheath base regions, the modified plant architecture population showed smaller values of sustaining tissue area, sclerenchyma area, vascular tissue area and number of smaller vascular bundles than the original one. In the ligule region the modified maize leaves had smaller vascular and sustaining tissue areas, reducing transportation area, which could reduce gram yield.
