Mixed calcium and copper oxalates, with different proportions of Ca2+ and Cu2+ ions, were precipitated by dimethyl oxalate hydrolysis in homogeneous solution. The compounds were evaluated by means of scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The results suggested quantitative precipitation without solid solution formation. From the TG and DTA curves, it was possible to evaluate the Ca2+ ion proportion in the solid phase and to confirm the precipitation of the individual species.

Brazil has one of the largest cattle herds in the world, so the cattle slaughter is one of the most important economic activities in the Brazilian market. But this activity requires a high demand of water, resulting in serious problems about the correct disposal of wastewater generated in the process. This effluent has a high pollution load, becoming its receiving bodies (streams and rivers) unfit for various activities such as public water supply, recreation, fisheries. To minimize the environmental impacts of its industrial wastewater and fallow the local environmental legislation, refrigerators must make the treatment of these effluents. This study aimed to verify the efficiency of a enzymatic reactor, when occur hydrolysis of lipids present in the effluent industrial of an cattle slaughter industry. The treatment system used was composed of two separate reactors: one being the anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR), inoculated with immobilized enzymes on the matrix support, and the other by sequential batch reactor (SBR) inoculated with activated sludge. Whereas, the reactors have been developed and installed at the Wastewater Treatment Laboratory, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, UNESP, campus Presidente Prudente. The procedure operating occurred differently for each reactor: preparation and inoculation of enzyme granules, filling the reactor, hydrolysis, and AFBR emptying, filling, aerobic reaction, sedimentation, and emptying the SBR. A protein extract containing a plant lipase from oleaginous seeds of Pachira aquatica was tested using soybean oil, wastewater from a poultry processing plant, and beef fat particles as substrate. The hydrolysis experiments were carried out at a temperature of 40°C, an incubation time of 90 minutes, and pH 8.0-9.0. The enzyme had the best stability at pH 9.0 and showed good stability in the alkaline range. It was found that P. aquatica lipase was stable in the presence of some commercial laundry detergent formulations, and it retained full activity up to 0.35% in hydrogen peroxide, despite losing activity at higher concentrations. Concerning wastewater, the lipase increased free fatty acids release by 7.4 times and promoted the hydrolysis of approximately 10% of the fats, suggesting that it could be included in a pretreatment stage, especially for vegetable oil degradation.

The electrochemical behaviour of N-R-4-cyanopyridinium (4-rcp) (R = methyl, decyl, dodecyl, or benzyl) coordinated to pentaammineruthenium(II) in CF3COOH-CF3COONa (μ = 0.1 M, pH 3) aqueous medium was studied by means of cyclic voltammetry and constant potential electrolysis. The electrochemical oxidation of the metallic centre (Ep ca 0.51 V/SCE) can be described as a reversible monoelectronic charge-transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction, which is the hydrolysis of N-R-4-cyanopyridiniumpentaammineruthenium(III) (A) to N-R-4-carboxamidepyridiniumruthenium (III) (B) with the kf1 values depending on the type of alkyl group. The E 1 2 values are not significantly influenced by the nature of the alkyl group. At more negative potential (ca -0.5 V/SCE), B undergoes an electrochemical reduction followed by an aquation reaction to produce aquopentaammineruthenium(II) and free N-R-4-carboxamidepyridinium. The amide was identified by comparison of its cyclic voltammogram and UV-vis spectrum with that of a sample prepared by chemical reaction. The results were also discussed by comparison with other systems, and show that nitrile-amide conversion catalysed by pentaammineruthenium(II) complexes is possible. © 1994.
