Maternal undernutrition affects the foetal development, promoting renal alterations and adult hypertension. The present study investigates, in adult male rats, the effect of food restriction in utero on arterial blood pressure changes (AP), and its possible association with the number of nephrons, renal function and angiotensin II (AT1R/AT2R), glucocorticoid (GR) and mineralocorticoid (MCR) receptors expression. The daily food supply to pregnant rats was measured and one group (n=5) received normal quantity of food (NF) while the other group received 50% of that (FR50) (n=5). The AP was measured weekly. At 16 weeks of life, fractionator’s method was used to estimate glomeruli number in histological slices. The renal function was estimate by creatinine and lithium clearances. Blood and urine samples were collected to biochemical determination of creatinine, sodium, potassium and lithium. At 90th and 23rd days of life, kidneys were also processed to AT1R, AT2R, GR and MCR immunolocalization and for western blotting analysis. FR50 offspring shows a significant reduction in BW (FR50: 5.67 ± 0.16 vs. 6.84 ± 0.13g in NF, P<0.001) and increased AP from 6th to 12nd week (6thwk FR50: 149.1 ± 3.4 vs. 125.1 ± 3.2mmHg in NF, P<0.001and, 12ndwk FR50: 164.4 ± 4.9 vs. 144.0 ± 3.3 mmHg in NF, P=0.02). Expression of AT1R and AT2R were significantly decreased in FR50 (AT1, 59080 ± 2709 vs. 77000 ± 3591 in NF, P=0.05; AT2, 27500 ± 95.50 vs. 67870 ± 1509 in NF, P=0.001) while the expression of GR increased in FR50 (36090 ± 781.5 vs. 4446 ± 364.5 in NF, P=0.0007). The expression of MCR did not change significantly. We also verified a pronounced decrease in fractional urinary sodium excretion in FR50 offspring (0.03 ± 0.02 vs. 0.06 ± 0.04 in NF, p=0.03). It is understood by Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) or Stage IV Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) the morbid state in which there is a substantial and irreversible loss of functional capacity, metabolic and endocrine function in both kidneys, leading to a framework of dehydration, azotemia, electrolyte imbalance, anemia, uremic syndrome, secondary hyperparathyroidism, among other conditions that make the patient's life without treatment unfeasible. An adequate nutritional support to patients with CKD at any stage aims to maintain a good clinical condition and an attempt to delay the progression of the disease. The basis of a diet for patients with CKD is the restriction in this protein being of high biological value, low-phosphorus, high energy density, fiber and antioxidants combined with a good dietary practices that allow the patient a good quality of life

The concentration of metal pollutants such as lead (Pb), has grown and developed in populated areas due to pollution and other human activities. Consequently, the potential for achieve this element food chain has also increased. Lead is very toxic to humans, especially to children, and exposure to lead can cause adverse health effects mainly on human nervous system, bone marrow and kidneys, interfering with chromosomal or genetic processes. This paper presents an overview of the main aspects related to environmental contamination by lead from battery plants. The assessment of an area contaminated by lead in Bauru-SP next a battery factory was reported in this work as well as the entire history of monitoring, classification and application of processes applied by CETESB since 2002. Analyzing the issue in its economic aspects, we found that the degradation of the environment is directly related to the development model adopted by the capitalist system, which is based on the law of supply and demand for products and services. The data presented indicate that Brazil still needs a broader policy where government agencies, industries and population through awareness can be united for the same purpose: to preserve life

As infecções do trato urinário (ITU) são definidas como a invasão e posterior multiplicação de microorganismos nos tecidos das vias urinárias, sendo a bactéria gram-negativa E.coli o principal uropatógeno envolvido nessa infecção. A avaliação para a presença de ITU é feita através do quadro clínico característico desse tipo de paciente e o exame de cultura de urina. As amostras positivas para as culturas são avaliadas quanto ao perfil de sensibilidade aos antimicrobianos dos agentes etiológicos encontrados. Descrever a porcentagem de ocorrência dos agentes etiológicos e o perfil de sensibilidade aos antimicrobianos das Infecções do Trato Urinário em pacientes ambulatoriais de Botucatu e região. Foram incluídas neste estudo culturas de urinas de pacientes atendidos em UBS de Botucatu e região Pólo Cuesta, no período de Janeiro de 2008 a Maio de 2010. As culturas positivas foram avaliadas quanto a porcentagem de ocorrência dos uropatógenos segundo sexo, faixa etária e origem. Foi utilizado o teste do qui-quadrado para verificar associação entre cada antimicrobiano e as porcentagens de sensibilidade e resistência encontradas. Foram avaliadas 11.768 culturas de urina provenientes de 11 municípios da região, sendo consideradas as culturas positivas (28%). Quanto à ocorrência dos agentes etiológicos verificou-se que a E.coli é responsável 58,76% dos casos. A distribuição dos uropatógenos segundo sexo revelou maior ocorrência de E.coli nos dois sexos. O segundo agente etiológico de maior ocorrência foi, nos homens o Proteus mirabilis e nas mulheres, o S. saprophyticus. Dentre as faixas etárias, a E.coli foi o patógeno de maior ocorrência. O perfil de sensibilidade aos antimicrobianos revelou que a E.coli é mais sensível a Ertapenem, Imipenem, Meropenem, Fosfomicina, Amicacina, Ceftriaxona, Nitrofurantoína e Norfloxacina; e mais resistente... Uremic syndrome, arising from kidney malfunction, consists of a set of systemic changes caused by the accumulation of toxic substances to the body. Since, with the advance of medicine, the animals lived more reaching advanced age and entering thus on track of senility, chronic renal disease, became a common complaint in the routine of the ambulatory. This high rate of morbidity generates an increased need for clarification of pathophysiology involved in this disease. The components of the uremic syndrome include water and sodium imbalance, anemia, intolerance to carbohydrate, neurological disorders, disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, osteoarthritis, immunological incompetence and metabolic acidosis. The clinical manifestations occur in isolation or in combination. In most cases canines patients are subject to an assessment when the kidney disease has evolved to the final stage with uremic syndrome and installed already, under these conditions, the prognosis is reserved

As espécies reativas de oxigênio podem participar de mecanismos envolvidos em respostas fisiológicas, como os efeitos hipertensores e dipsogênicos da angiotensina II (ANG II) central, que seriam pelo menos em parte devidos a produção de radical superóxido (O2 −). Por isso, uma superexpressão da enzima superóxido dismutase que reduz a disponibilidade de O2 − convertendo-o em peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2) inibiria o efeito pressor da ANG II administrada centralmente. Porém, alguns resultados de nosso laboratório demonstram que H2O2 injetado intracerebroventricularmente (icv) reduz a ingestão de água induzida pela ANG II em ratos normotensos. Portanto, no presente trabalho propomos estudar os efeitos de injeções de H2O2 ou de ATZ (inibidor da catalase) sozinhos ou combinados no ventrículo lateral (VL) e também os efeitos do ATZ injetado intravenosamente (i.v.) sozinho ou combinado com H2O2 no VL sobre a resposta pressora da ANG II também injetada no VL em ratos normotensos, espontaneamente hipertensos (SHRs) ou em ratos com hipertensão renovascular do tipo 2 rins 1 clipe (2R1C). Foram utilizados ratos Holtzman normotensos, SHRs e ratos com hipertensão renovascular 2R1C com cânulas de aço inoxidável previamente implantadas no VL. A pressão arterial e a freqüência cardíaca foram registradas em sistema computadorizado diretamente da aorta em ratos não anestesiados por uma cânula de polietileno introduzida pela artéria femoral e a injeção i.v. foi realizada por meio de uma cânula de polietileno introduzida na veia femoral. A pressão arterial e freqüência cardíaca foram registradas continuamente desde 30 minutos antes da primeira injeção (veículo, salina, H2O2 ou ATZ) até 30 minutos após a injeção de ANG II. P-glycoprotein is an adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-driven drug efflux carrier responsible for transport of xenobiotics and multiple classes of drugs, many usually use in veterinary medicine. Encoded by MDR1 gene, also referred to as ABCB1, located on chromosome 14, is expressed in many tissues with secretory or excretory functions, such as liver, kidney and intestine, where it limits drug absorption from the gut and promotes drug excretion into the bile and urine of their substrates. In 2001, a 4 base pair gene deletion mutation in the canine MDR1 gene was identified as MDR1-1▲, ABCB1-1▲, MDR1 MDR1 nt 230 (del4) and associated with an non-functional Pglycoprotein. The clinical correlation is the (hyper) sensitivity of certain dogs breeds, mostly collies, to a few classes of drugs such as anticancer drugs (doxorubicin, vincristine, vinblastine), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), antiparasitic drugs (ivermectin, moxidectin), steroids hormones (aldosterone, cortisol, dexamethasone), antimicrobial agents (tetracycline, doxycycline, levofloxacin, ketoconazole, itraconazole), analgesics (morphine, methadone), antidiarrheals (loperamide), antiepileptic agents (phenothiazine), cardiac drugs (digoxin, diltiazem, verapamil, talinolol) and others. Dogs with homozygous MDR1 nt 230 (del4) MDR1 mutations (MDR1 - / -) have a higher predisposition to intoxication with substrates of P-gp than heterozygous (MDR1 + / -) and these are more likely than dogs homozygous nonmutant (MDR1 +/ +). After the identification of nt230 (del4) mutation, several molecular techniques have been developed for identification of mutant animals as a diagnostic method. The pets, mostly dogs and cats are susceptible to a variety of situations that can lead to acute kidney failure, such as infection and intoxication, besides other common causes such as dehydration or other pre-existing diseases. The abrupt decrease in renal function in these animals characterizes a severe clinical condition and requires specialized veterinary medical care since it increases the death. Early diagnosis is an important factor for the survival of these animals and so is the appropriate treatment. New technologies on diagnosis and treatment of serious diseases in veterinary medicine have made acute renal failure successfully reversed by hemodialysis in cases where conventional therapy may not be effective. In cases like that, hemodialysis treatment may be the only chance of survival for the animals, which makes this therapy more and more important and necessary, especially in referral centers of veterinary assistance

Nosso organismo constantemente perde água e eletrólitos para o meio ambiente, principalmente pela excreção urinária.Porém, a osmolaridade e o volume de líquidos do organismo devem permanecer dentro de uma pequena faixa de variação para que nossas células funcionem perfeitamente e haja manutenção da pressão arterial. A regulação da osmolaridade e do volume dos líquidos corporais exige que a entrada de água e eletrólitos seja igual à perda pelo corpo e, para tanto, a regulação envolve a ação integrada dos rins e do comportamento de ingestão de água e sódio que é o principal íon extracelular. A ingestão de água e sódio é regulada por mecanismos centrais excitatórios e inibitórios. Os mecanismos excitatórios que desencadeiam a ingestão de água e sódio são ativados principalmente pelo peptídeo angiotensina II (ANG II), cuja produção apresenta-se aumentada em situações de hipovolemia e hipotensão. Por outro lado, destacam-se importantes mecanismos inibitórios da ingestão de água e sódio descobertos recentemente no núcleo parabraquial lateral (NPBL). O NPBL é uma estrutura pontina que recebe projeções aferentes da área postrema (AP) e da porção medial do núcleo do trato solitário (NTSm) e que faz conexões com áreas prosencefálicas envolvidas no controle do balanço hidroeletrolítico. Estudos prévios mostraram que injeções bilaterais do agonista opióide inespecífico β-endorfina no NPBL induziram ingestão de água e sódio em ratos saciados e aumentaram a ingestão de água e sódio induzida pelo tratamento com o diurético furosemida (FURO) combinado com baixas doses do bloqueador da enzima conversora de angiotensina captopril (CAP) injetados subcutaneamente (sc)... The kidneys, for his anatomical and functional characteristics, are sensitive to affections that take the liberation of renal toxins or the blood supply, causing irreversible injuries to his renoparenchymal tissue that is substituted by fibrous tissue. Even after the resolution of the basic cause, there will be the loss of a significant number of his functional unity, renal adaptations will take place in the attempt of maintaining the renal function. These adaptations produce additional injuries, perpetuating to loss of renoparenchymal tissue and the reduction of the renal function. The renal insufficiency (IR) takes place after the loss of 3/4 of the number of his functional unities. Before the progression to the phase of IR, the animal shows up practically without symptoms, but for the gradual increase of the urinary and of the ingestion of water. The reduction of the degree of renal function leads to alterations system compensatory for the accumulation of substances that would suffer renal excretion. The progression of IR leads to the phase of the syndrome urêmica. In this phase the animal presents innumerable clinical signs that can take it to the death. The treatment is symptomatic and dietetic, but depending on the phase not much efficient. Because of being progressive and insidious, the IRC demands the preparation of campaigns and programs of explanation for the veterinary doctors who aim for the consciousness and/or sensibility of the owners to carry out periodic examinations of selection that precociously detect the renal dysfunction. The diagnosis in the beginning IR enables the efficiency of the treatment in stop or slowing his progression, extending the time and quality of life of the patient

O Agaricus balzei Murrill (ABM), comumente conhecido como cogumelo-do-sol, tornou-se popular, devido sua utilização no tratamento de diversas doenças, uma vez que a populaçao em geral lhe atribui diversos efeitos benéficos. Sendo assim, o cogumelo em questão é bastante estudado pelos pesquisadores, na tentativa de validar esses possíveis efeitos medicinais. O presente trabalho pretendeu avaliar os efeitos renais e adicionalmente os parâmetros cardiovasculares, analisando os efeitos do extrato aquoso de ABM em ratos Wistar in vivo. Estes estudos foram realizados em gaiolas metabólicas e os animais divididos em dois grupos: controle (n=8), onde os ratos recebiam uma picada para simular a injeção e experimental (n=10),onde os ratos recebiam 1mL de extrato aquoso à 2% por via intraperitoneal, ao longo do período tratado. Foram avaliados: o fluxo urinário de 24h, carga excretada de sódio (Qe Na+) e carga excretada de potássio (Qe K+) durante o período basal (30dias) e o período tratado (60 dias). Já os parâmetros cardiovasculares foram mensurados (com o sistema BIOPAC), ao fim do período de 60dias de tratamento. Por meio destas análises foi possível registrar uma queda aguda de pressão arterial nos ratos do grupo experimental, durante 15min, nesses ratos. Também foram observadas as respostas barorreflexas e a resposta bradicárdia foi menos acentuadas no grupo experimetal após a administração de fenilefrina (5μg/kg) em comparação ao grupo controle (p<0,05). Os resultados de fluxo urinário de 24h, Qe Na+ e Qe K+ demostraram que o extrato aquoso de ABM foi capaz de promover um aumento significativo (p<0,05) de 36%, 20% e 22%, respectivamente. Os resultados aqui apresentados, indicam que esse extrato tem princípios ativos natriuréticos e, além disso, o extrato apresentou uma redução acentuada após 15min da injeção... It is known that exposure to substances in the environment can contribute to various reproductive disorders, especially if such exposure occurs during critical periods of development such as the intra-uterine and postnatal. The female reproductive system may be the target of androgens, both as a result of exposure to environmental chemicals, or by pathological conditions (polycystic ovary syndrome or congenital adrenal hyperplasia).Usually, little attention is given off in relation to the study of androgenic effects in the female reproductive axis. This study aims to evaluate the effects of exposure to androgens on the development, structure and reproductive function in rats whose mothers were exposed to testosterone propionate from gestational day 12 (DG12) after weaning - postnatal day 21 (DPN21) . For this purpose, pregnancy rats were divided into four groups: a control group that received corn oil (vehicle) and three groups receiving testosterone propionate in doses of 0.05 mg / kg / day, 0.1 mg / kg / day and 0.2 mg / kg / day, all under the same experimental conditions. The possible effects of exposure were assessed using reproductive parameters, such as a measure of anogenital distance, count areolas / nipples, age at vaginal opening and first estrus (puberty indicative installation), weight and histological evaluation of the reproductive organs ( uterus and ovaries), weight of the kidneys, liver and pituitary hormone levels, regularity of the estrous cycle, sexual behavior and fertility. Such analysis is important in understanding the effects of androgen exposure on the female genital system, especially on the reproductive potential, and processes that may involve morphofunctional changes. In these experimental conditions, it is concluded that treatment with PT caused reduction in body weight and initial masculinization in females without cubs, however, commit further sexual development

Plumbism is considered the oldest occupational disease. Among the pathophysiological effects associated with lead (Pb) are cardiovascular disorders. Many diseases that develop later in life are determined during the early stages of life, under the influence of exposure and preferred diet of the mother. Still, one should consider that many environmental contaminants at levels not harmful can determine pathophysiological processes if physical or chemical stressors and/or pathological conditions are present. In this context, the intrauterine malnutrition may represent an additional risk factor in exposure to Pb during pregnancy and lactation. For these reasons, the objective of this study was to evaluate the cardiovascular risk of weaned rats that have suffered perinatal exposure to Pb and intrauterine malnutrition, alone or in combination. After mating, female rats were divided into control (ctrl, ad libitum), food restriction (RA, the same diet 50% of consumption in the control group during pregnancy), exposed to Pb (500 ppm Pb in drinking water during pregnancy and lactation) and association (As, received the last two procedures in combination). Cumulative concentration-effect curves (CECs) to CaCl2 and noradrenaline (NA) were obtained in rings with and without endothelium of the same thoracic aorta from male weaned rats (23-25 days old). Maternal weight, litter weight, weight and number of pups at birth, anogenital distance, arterial blood pressure (ABP) and weight of tissues (kidney, liver, aorta, left ventricle) were evaluated. Changes in vascular reactivity were assessed by the maximum response (MR) and 50% effective concentration (EC50). Data were presented as mean ± SEM. Statistical analysis was performed by multifactorial analysis of variance and Tukey's post test.
