Objective: evaluate the immediate dental and skeletal changes induced by the Herbst appliance on early treatment of Angle´s Class II malocclusion. Material and Method: several electronic databases such as Scopus, Pub Med, Medline, Cochrane Library, Lilacs and Scielo were searched. The abstracts that fullfilled the selection criteria were selected and those that did not provide enough information about these criteria were selected but the final decision of including them or not on the research, was taken after the complete reading of the article. The selection criteria were: clinical studies with Class II individuals, both male and female, with initial age of 7 to 10 years, treated with the Herbst appliance that analysed the dental and/or skeletal changes evaluated on lateral cephalometric radiographs; researches where the treatment performed did not involve extractions or surgical interventions; studies that included patients without syndromes or health concerns and articles published in English or Portuguese. Results and Conclusions: five articles were selected. The articles showed that significant changes happened in the mandibular sagittal lenght, on facial convexity angle, on maxillo-mandibular relationship, on retroclination of the upper incisors and on distal movement of the upper molars, on proclination of the lower incisors and on extrusion of the lower molars. The appliance exerted a limited effect on the anterior relocation of the maxillary complex and on facial heights. However, more studies about the performance of the Herbst appliance on early treatment of Class II are needed.

Objective: To assess the attitudes and knowledge about hepatitis by scholars and dental practitioners from Recife and its metropolitan region. Method: The research protocol was submitted and approved by the Ethics and Human Research Committee of the Federal University of Pernambuco. There were included 230 undergraduate students in dentistry and 104 dentists who exercise their professional activity in Recife and its Metropolitan Region. They signed a consent form and answered a questionnaire, the evaluative instrument, with objective questions about biosafety, transmission of hepatitis and sexually transmitted diseases. Results: About the types of hepatitis 133 (57.8%) students and 61 (58.7%) professionals claimed to know the types A, B and C. Concerning transmission 31 (13.5%) students and 25 (24.0%) professionals said that the main route of transmission were sexual and bloodstream respectively. Relating to imunization 221 (96.1%) students and 99 (95.2%) professionals reported that have been vaccinated against hepatitis B, however, only 126 (54.8%) students and 55 (52.9%) professionals have followed the immunization’s schema. Regarding the cleaning of the office equipment, 18.7% of the students replied that they do not know who does it. 56.7% of professionals said that it was performed with alcohol 70 ° GL.Conclusions: The findings indicate that there is a concern for biosafety but the knowledge about the forms of hepatitis transmission and biosecurity measures need to be better settled.

Introduction: The configuration and dimensions of the upper airway are determined by anatomical structures such as soft tissues, muscles and craniofacial skeleton, composing or surrounding the pharynx. Anatomical abnormalities of the soft tissues and / or craniofacial skeleton may become more narrow upper airway. The orthognathic surgery, which is used in the correction of dentoskeletal deformities, also causes changes in the upper airway. Objective: In view of the facts presented, this article aims to review the literature on the changes of the upper airway in patients’ class III undergoing orthognathic surgery. Methodology: International Literature on Health Sciences (Pubmed ) and Port Journals CAPES original and review published between 1990 and 2010, in two bibliographic databases articles were selected. Results: thirty-nine (39) articles were selected for writing this review. Conclusion: The upper airway deformity and dental- skeletal class III should be carefully evaluated prior to orthognathic surgery and whenever surgical planning permit should prefer the maxillary advances to mandibular setbacks

The purpose of this literature review is to present the state-of-the-art on the application of tissue engineering techniques in sinus lifts procedures, reporting the influence of these techniques in increasing bone height and volume in the maxillary sinus, and the osseointegration of the implants installed in the grafted areas. PubMed and Scopus databases were searched using the keywords “scaffold” OR “engineered tissue” AND “sinus augmention” OR “sinus floor elevation”. In the initial search 463 articles were selected, of which 19 were selected abstracts reading, with nine papers selected by the end, for evaluation of the application of tissue engineering techniques in sinus lift procedures. Despite the positive results of tissue engineering procedures in sinus floor elevation reported in the selected articles, further studies are still needed, for a better standardization of experimental models and materials used, leading to definitive conclusions about the effects of the application of tissue engineering procedures on bone formation in maxillary sinus lifting procedures.

Lasers are widely used tools in many therapeutic modalities in medical lasers and can be divided into low and high intensity. For the treatment of periodontal disease, lowintensity lasers are related to reduce the number of bacteria and to induce inflammatory and analgesic properties. The high intensity lasers can be used in surgical procedures, improving hemostasis, promoting more accurate cuts, removal of dental calculus as well as thermomechanical and photochemical interactions with tissue. The high-intensity laser Erbium impregnated with chromium: YSGG laser has shown satisfactory results when applied in endodontic, restorative denstistry, surgical procedures and non-surgical periodontal treatment. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the studies that investigated the effects of Er, Cr: YSGG laser on the morphology and biocompatibility of titanium and root surfaces irradiated with these lasers, even beyond the effect on the treatment of periodontitis and periimplantitis.

Unilateral or bilateral distal-extension removable partial dentures present complex biomechanics. The movements in different directions, associated with the alveolar ridge shape and soft tissue resilience can lead to damaging forces on the supporting structures. The association between implants / removable partial denture aims to provide better mechanical and biological properties to the stomatognathic system. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to review the articles about the effect of implant support on distal extension removable partial dentures. LITERATURE REVIEW AND CONCLUSION: Studies have shown that this combination provides greater support, retention and stability to the prosthesis, thus limiting their approach movement toward supporting tissues and providing functional and psychological comfort to patients.

The contemporary implant dentistry is in constant technological development, improving the oral rehabilitation process of partial or totally edentulous patients. On the other hand, anatomical limitations, such as the maxillary sinus and the mandibular canal in the posterior region of the jaws can limit the implant placement. Furthermore, due to the absence of dental elements, alveolar ridge atrophy is frequently observed. This aspect represents a loss either in quantity or quality of the bone tissue available for the dental implant rehabilitation. To make possible the dental implant rehabilitation even in adverse conditions, some solutions have been considered, such as the use of short implants (≤ 10 mm length) and/or small diameter implants (2,8; 3,3 and 3,5 mm width). The aim of this study is to present a literature review considering the use of short implants in oral rehabilitation, presenting the currently view of the matter. Based on the literature review, the use of short implants produced similar clinical success to conventional implants (greater than 10 mm in length). Therefore, its use can be considered a viable alternative, where anatomical limitations are present.

The esthetics of the teeth is not a privilege of our days, because concerns in that effect have been reported since 1860. Faced with an endodontically treated tooth that presents any type of color change, professionals can use intracoronary bleaching, which is more conservative attempt to restore the normal color of teeth. Bleaching aims to remove pigments by oxidizing agents and for that, various techniques were developed. Among the risks of tooth whitening the external resorption is the most severe, which occurs when the whitening penetrates through the dentin tubules to the periodontal ligament and initiates an inflammatory response. To prevent external resorption is required to place an intracoronal bleaching barrier. It is important to know the time between the bleaching treatment for restoring procedure for getting a good sealing to prevent microleakage. This study aims to review the literature about the different types of bleaching agents and their risks.

Currently, periodontal aesthetics has been prized for harmony of the smile. The clinical crown lengthening, gingival excess or altered passive eruption, is effectively corrected by periodontal surgery. The purpose of this paper is to show, through a literature review, some types of surgery on clinical crown lengthening and root coverage. Clinical crown lengthening is done to Change the size of the anterior teeth and to optimize the cosmetic result of treatment with new coronal restoration and other cosmetic dental care. In general, the treatment plan and the choice of operative technique begin with careful clinical examination. Recessions tissue can be defined as a displacement of the gingival margin toward the junction mucogingival exposing the root surface. These, when present, impacting on patient comfort by providing the occurrence of cervical dentin hypersensitivity, and the esthetic, the amendment of the gum line. Successful treatment of recessions is based on knowledge of its etiology and assessment of predictability of surgical techniques that aim to root coverage. Through literature review, we can conclude that the types of surgery most often used are: 1) to increase the clinical crown, gingivectomy, flap surgery and gingivoplasty osteotomy, and 2) for root coverage, the use will depend on the amount of gum keratinized and especially the classification of Miller.

The possibilities of treatment with dental implants have revolutionized the field of oral rehabilitation in recent years, bringing a number of advantages over conventional prostheses. For years, a surgical protocol was followed that called for maintaining the implant without load for a certain period for osseointegration, but experimental studies have shown that immediate loading of implants also leads to the formation of peri-implant bone tissue along the time, similarly to that observed for conventionally loaded implants. This study aimed to conduct a literature review regarding the use of this alternative rehabilitation with single implants. The immediate loading of single-tooth replacements is presented as an excellent treatment alternative.

The knowledge of Forensic Anthropology is very importance in cases of identification of human remains. One phase of this process is the study of human height, which can be accomplished with relative ease when intact corpses, complete skeletons or long bones are available. However, the experience of Forensic Dentistry is essential in situations in which there is only information of the skull or of the teeth. The objective of this study was to review in the literature and evaluate works concerning the estimate of the height calculated from dental dimensions. Carrea, in 1920, proposed the estimation of the probable height of an individual by developing formulas for maximum and minimum heights from measurements of the lower central and lateral incisors and canines. The method was used in the case "Josef Mengele", to complement estimates. Tested in the Brazilian population, 70% of match between the actual and the estimated stature were obtained. Using more precise instruments, in the modified method, 96% of correct matching were verified. Recently, a new formula was introduced to estimate height, from measurements of upper teeth, because the technique cannot be used when jaw is not available. The correlation between height and dental dimensions is demonstrated. However, there is still a lack in scientific literature in this field, and further studies are necessary. The estimate of height from dental dimensions can be very useful and important, especially in situations where the complete skeleton it not found, and long bones are not available.
