In this paper we describe a scheduler simulator for real-time tasks, RTsim, that can be used as a tool to teach real-time scheduling algorithms. It simulates a variety of preprogrammed scheduling policies for single and multi-processor systems and simple algorithm variants introduced by its user. Using RTsim students can conduct experiments that will allow them to understand the effects of each policy given different load conditions and learn which policy is better for different workloads. We show how to use RTsim as a learning tool and the results achieved with its application on the Real-Time Systems course taught at the B.Sc. on Computer Science at Paulista State University - Unesp - at Rio Preto.

This paper describes an innovative approach to establish a CS curriculum, aiming flexibility and minimization of the time spent in the classrooms. This approach has been developed at the Paulista State University - Unesp - at São José do Rio Preto, and is producing very interesting results. The load reduction is achieved through a series of fundamental core and breadth courses that precede depth courses in specific areas. The flexibility comes as a side effect of the depth courses, which can be adapted without any changes in the core courses. In the following pages we fully describe our motivations, actions and results.

This project has been developed to evaluate the possible relationship between the cesspit (pit latrine) in as far as it degrades the quality of underground water. Its importance is due to the fact that in the rural communities in the State of São Paulo (Brazil) this type of cesspit is very common as a means of sewage disposal and these communities use underground water for their supply of drinking water. Rural properties distributed over the rural area in the municipality of São José do Rio Preto were selected. A preliminary study was then set up to determine the social situation and health of the households as well as qualitative evaluations on the type of water supply and sewage disposal of these communities. Campaigns of water sampling then followed and laboratory analyses of water taken from wells were carried out. Parameters were set up to evaluate the potability according to Brazilian legislation (2004) paying attention to microbiologic (coliforms, Crytosporidium sp., and adenovirus). The analyses showed evidence of possible interaction between the wells and the sewage effluents and drainage in these communities. A PCR reaction to detect adenovirus showed a presence in 53.3% of the samples. The tests for the detection of Cryotosporidium sp all showed a negative result.

Multiple resistances to antimicrobial drugs arising in Escherichia coli isolates may complicate therapeutic management of urinary tract infection (UTI) by this organism. In order to assess the multidrug resistance (MDR) among urinary E. coli isolates, we have tested 11 antimicrobial drugs against 67 isolates from outpatients attended in a tertiary-care teaching hospital and of 78 isolates from a municipal health unit, respectively in Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Seventy-six percent and 22% of the isolates from the tertiary-care hospital and the municipal unit, respectively, were resistant to three or more different classes of agents, and were considered to present MDR. Among the isolates from the hospital patients, 73.0%, 65.0%, 58.0%, 58.0% and 31.0% were resistant to tetracycline, ampicillin, cephalothin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) and norfloxacin, respectively; resistance from the municipal unit patients were 31.0%, 37.0%, 8.0%, 29.0% and 12.0% respectively, to the same drugs. The predominant phenotype among the MDR isolates presented is ampicillin, TMP/SMX and tetracycline resistance. The high prevalence of drug resistance among UTI patients calls for continuous surveillance to assure effective control of this infection. © 2007 by The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases and Contexto Publishing. The production of ethanol using Zymomonas mobilis had been reported to be three to four times larger than with Saccharomyces cereviseae. The influence of pH, temperature and composition of the means of fermentation are parameters that can direct the metabolism for the production of ethanol. The objective of this study was to evaluate the production of ethanol by Zymomonas mobilis CCT 4494, by variations of the initial pH, temperature and concentrations KCl, K 2SO4, MgSO4, CaCl2 and sucrose, by a factorial experimental design of type 27-2, according to the model proposed by Box et al. (1978). For this, the broth of sugar cane was used as sole carbon source, because it is cheap and easily accessible in the region of São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo State. According to the experimental design, the bacteria Zymomonas mobilis CCT 4494 has adapted in the fermentation mean containing high concentrations of sucrose, and supported the change of pH and temperature of fermentation. The highest amount of ethanol produced was 8.89 mg mL-1. This is not similar to the levels of secondary metabolites produced by Zymomonas mobilis CCT 4494.
