To verify the levels of concentration of some heavy metals in fishes from Sorocaba river (São Paulo, Brazil) and evaluate if this contamination offers health risks to the fishermen, 63 samples of fishes collected from four points along the river were studied for cadmium, lead, chromium, nickel and mercury, with emphasis in this last, since it is the most toxic and most probable as a fish contaminant. Analyzing muscle samples by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry it was shown that the fishes are not contaminated. None of the five metals studied were present in prohibitive level and the fishes could be judged secure for human consume. It was also analyzed data from four years of cadmium, lead, chromium, nickel and mercury monitoring made by CETESB, from 1997 to 2000, in water from the main rivers of the State of São Paulo. The study pointed out that the majority of the monitored rivers still present contamination by those metals in a level that requires an improvement of the pollution control actions.

Among the sexual hormones the estrogens are receiving major attention due to their biological activity. Such biological response is atributed to the best conformation recognized by their receptors, resulting in maximum responses. The estrogens are also considered responsible for most of disruptor´s effects caused by their presence in aquatic ecosystems. The 17β-estradiol hormone is produced by vertebrates during the reproductive phase of their lives and its presence has been detected in superficial waters. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cause-effect of tilapia exposition to the hormone 17β-estradiol through the analysis of biotransformation enzymes in liver and gills, complemented with the quantification of 17β-estradiol and estrone in water samples collected from fish ponds integrated to swine production. The present study was conducted under laboratory conditions, in a randomized experimental design with three levels of 17β-estradiol (E2) (0, 5, 15 µg L-1), with three replicates. After 7 days of exposure time, liver and gills were extracted to analyze three isoforms of cytochrome P450: EROD, BROD, PROD and the activity of Glutathione S-Transferase (GST). The results showed that the EROD activity (CYP1A), normally induced by the metabolism of aromatic compounds, did not present statistical differences among the treatments exposed to E2, what means that the hormone did not induce isoform 1A in fish under these particular experimental conditions. PROD activity was significantly altered in both concentrations, by means of 5 and 15 µg L-1, when compared to control. This result can indicate an important role of PROD on the metabolism of E2 present in water. Regarding to the BROD activity, it could be observed differences statistically significant between control and both groups of treatments. Two or more CYP isoforms can contribute to the metabolism of the same compound, what makes BROD a candidate as a next bioindicator of the exposure to E2 in aquatic ecosystems. Analysis of variance could confirm the effect of E2 statistically significant on the GST activity in liver tissues with >90% of significance (Prob>F = 0.0753). Furthermore, it was possible to observe that the values of GSTs activities in liver and gills in both, control and treatments, follow a tendency, that means, enzymatic activity in gills increase as the increasing of the activity in the liver tissues. In this study, the 17βâestradiol was found in measurable concentrations in three sampled points, and these values were similar to the findings of other authors at different locations in Brazil. In addition, those values are much higher than the minimum concentration that presented observable effects (10 ng L-1).

Ichthyofaunistic studies aims to broad the knowledge of composition, abundance and distribution of species in certain areas, and when possible, to infer patterns of distribution, as well as extrinsic factors that affect these patterns in space and time. The Paranapanema River suffers the impact of the construction of hydroelectric power plants in cascade system along its main channel, changing the characteristics of lotic to lentic and semi-lentic. These changes affect the entire biocenosis and the surroundings of the reservoir and, in particular, the fish fauna. In this context, the aim of this study was to characterize the fish assemblage in two lakes and stretches of the main channel, located near the outfall of the Paranapanema River, Jurumirim reservoir area, comparing them to their composition and structure, using ecological indices as tools. Fish were caught every three months from April 2011 to January 2013, using gill nets of various mesh openings in four stretches: Environment 1 - Calha Sete Ilhas, Environment 2 - Calha Poço da Pedra, Environment 3 - Lagoa Sete Ilhas and Environment 4 - Lagoa Poço de Pedra. After the capture, the specimens were identified and biometric analysis was performed (total and standard length weight). We captured 4,006 individuals belonging to four orders and 34 species, 31 native species and three non-native species. In abundance (n) and number of species (S), there was a predominance of Characiformes (57 %) followed by Siluriformes (31%). Overall, most of the species was constant concerning the frequency of capture. The five most representative species in abundance were Schizodon intermedius, Cyphocarax modestus, Pimelodus maculatus, Hoplosternum littorale and Serrasalmus maculatus, contributing with 60% of total individuals captured. Regarding the stretches, these species present diversity (H'), evenness (E), dominance (D) and richness (d) of similar species, since the abundance was higher in ...

Lipids have important biological functions, suchas membrane constituents, hormone precursors, and are efficient energy reserves, due to thers high caloric content. In fish, but not in mammals, lipid storage patterns are quite diverse. The aim of this study was to determine lipid distribution in somatic and reproductive tissues of matrinxã, Brycon cephalus, both male and female, highlighting somatic indices related to lipid dynamics. From Oct 98 to Jan 99, a total of 174 fish (8-12 each month) were sampled. After fish anesthesia, heparinized blood was collected for plasma triacylglycerol determination. Fish were individually weighed and measured, and liver, gonads and visceral fat were collected and weighed for HSI (hepatosomatic index), GSI (gonad somatic index) and MFI (mesenteric fat index) calculation. The highest values of total lipids were found in red muscle (about 18%), liver and gonads (about 16.5%). The white muscle had a lower concentration (2.5%). Analyses of variance of HSI and MFI showed fluctuations along the experimental period with lowest concentrations in the periods of highest temperatures. Matrinxã store lipids in several body tissues, including mesenteric fat, liver, muscles and gonads.

Among the major food-borne parasitic zoonoses, the helminthiasis transmitted by consumption of fish have been highlighted because they involve a large number of individuals in many regions of the world in recent years. In the past, these parasitosis were restricted to underdeveloped nations or with peculiar eating habits; however the process of globalization of food production, the increased international travel and consumption of fish for their nutritional benefits caused the expansion into new areas, which had never before been recorded, making it a serious public health problem in some countries. This review discuss the main helminths transmitted by eating raw or undercooked fish, in order to alert the public, the scientific community and health authorities about their risks to human health, as well as stimulate the realization of new researches that contributes to a greater knowledge of the epidemiological situation in the country of these parasites and the development of strategies for prevention and control of them.
