Lentinula edodes (Shiitake) modulates chemically induced mutagenesis by enhancing pitting

This study was undertaken to understand how Lentinula edodes modulates in vivo mutagenesis induced by alkylating agents in bone marrow and peripheral blood as described in our previous article. Male Swiss mice were pretreated for 15 consecutive days with aqueous extracts prepared from L. edodes, after which, the number of circulating blood cells, normal erythroid bone marrow cell cycling, and phagocytosis of micronucleated reticulocyte (MNRET) and activation of spleen macrophages were assessed. The results indicate that the antimutagenicity seen in bone marrow and peripheral blood is exerted by distinct compounds with different actions. The antimutagenic effect in bone marrow is exerted by compounds subject to degradation at deep-freeze storage temperature of -20 C. On the other hand, compounds responsible for antimutagenicity in peripheral blood are not subject to degradation at -20 C. The results also indicate that the antimutagenic action in peripheral blood leading to the reduction of circulating MNRET occurs in the spleen primarily through a phagocytic activity due to higher macrophage numbers and probably not due to the enhanced activation state of individual cells. © Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

Comparison of inflammatory cytokine profiles in plasma of patients undergoing otorhinological surgery with propofol or isoflurane anesthesia

Objective and design: The effects of anesthetics on cytokine release in patients without comorbidities who undergo minor surgery are not well defined. We compared inflammatory cytokine profiles in adult patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery who received isoflurane or propofol anesthesia. Methods: Thirty-four patients without comorbidities undergoing minor surgery were randomly assigned to receive an inhaled anesthetic (isoflurane; n = 16) or an intravenous anesthetic (propofol; n = 18). Blood samples were drawn before premedication and anesthesia (T1), 120 min after anesthesia induction (T2), and on the first post-operative day (T3). Plasma concentrations of interleukins (IL-) 1β, 6, 8, 10 and 12 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were measured using flow cytometry. Results: The pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 was increased in the isoflurane group at T2 and T3 compared to T1 (P < 0.01). In the propofol group, IL-6 and IL-8 were significantly increased at T3 compared to T1. However, there were no significant differences in cytokine concentrations between the isoflurane and propofol groups. Conclusion: An inflammatory response occurred earlier in patients who received an inhaled agent compared with an intravenous anesthetic, but no differences in plasma cytokine profiles were evident between isoflurane and propofol anesthesia in patients without comorbidities undergoing minimally invasive surgeries. © 2013 Springer Basel.

Synthesis, crystal structures, antimicrobial, antifungal and antituberculosis activities of mixed ligand silver(I) complexes

The biological activity of some new mixed silver-phosphane-thio-ligand complexes, with 1:1:2, 1:1:1 and 1:2:1 (Ag:phospine:ligand) compositions, have been examined. Ten compounds were prepared using a series of silver(I) salts [AgX, where X = NO3, ClO4, PF6 and Br], tertiary phosphines and the ligands thi-osemicarbazide, 2-(propan-2-ylidene) hydrazinecarbothioamide, and thiazolidine-2-thione. The syntheses were carried out under ambient conditions, and the ten complexes obtained were found to be light stable. All 10 compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy, whereas nine compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The anti-proliferative activities were evaluated by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC: lg/mL) in an aqueous suspension system and they all show promising potential activity against selective strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungous and Mycrobaterium tuberculosis H37Rv. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Parametric VaR with goodness-of-fit tests based on EDF statistics for extreme returns

Parametric VaR (Value-at-Risk) is widely used due to its simplicity and easy calculation. However, the normality assumption, often used in the estimation of the parametric VaR, does not provide satisfactory estimates for risk exposure. Therefore, this study suggests a method for computing the parametric VaR based on goodness-of-fit tests using the empirical distribution function (EDF) for extreme returns, and compares the feasibility of this method for the banking sector in an emerging market and in a developed one. The paper also discusses possible theoretical contributions in related fields like enterprise risk management (ERM). © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
