The use of internal standardization for simultaneous atomic absorption spectrometry (SIMAAS) was investigated for Cd and Pb determination in whole blood. The comparison of thermochemical and physicochemical parameters allowed the selection of Ag, Bi, and Tl as internal standard candidates. Correlation graphs, plotted from the normalized absorbance signals (n = 20) of internal standard (axis y) versus analyte ( axis x), precision and accuracy were used to select Ag as the most appropriate internal standard. Blood samples were diluted (1 + 9) with 0.11% (m/v) Triton X-100 + 1.1% (v/v) HNO3 + 0.28% (m/v) NH4H2PO4 + 10 mug L-1 Ag+. Pyrolysis and atomization temperatures for the optimized heating program were 550 and 1700 degreesC, respectively. Characteristic masses based on integrated absorbance were 1.68 +/- 0.01 pg for Cd and 30.3 +/- 0.1 pg for Pb. The detection limits (DL) were 0.095 +/- 0.001 mug L-1 and 0.86 +/- 0.01 mug L-1 for Cd and Pb, respectively. The mean RSD for all determinations was the same for Cd (13 +/- 9%) with or without Ag as internal standard ( IS). on the other hand, the use of Ag as IS improved the RSD for Pb from 3.6 +/- 4.0% to 2.2 +/- 2.0%. An effective contribution of the internal standard Ag was verified in the recoveries of spiked samples (0.5 mug L-1 Cd2+ and 5.0 mug L-1 Pb2+). The mean recoveries were 81 +/- 8% and 91 +/- 4% for Cd, and 80 +/- 11% and 93 +/- 6% for Pb without and with IS correction, respectively. This is the first application of IS for a simultaneous determination by SIMAAS.

A tungsten carbide coating on the integrated platform of a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA((R))) used together with Pd(NO3)(2) + Mg(NO3)(2) as modifier is proposed for the direct determination of lead in vinegar by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The optimized heating program (temperature, ramp time, hold time) of atomizer involved drying stage (110 degrees C, 5 s, 30 s; 130 degrees C, 5 s, 30 s), pyrolysis stage (1000 degrees C, 15 s, 30 s), atomization stage (1800 degrees C, 0 s, 5 s) and clean-out stage (2450 degrees C, I s, 3 s). For 10 mu L of vinegar delivered into the atomizer and calibration using working standard solutions (2.5-20.0 mu g L-1 Pb) in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3, analytical curve with good linear correlation (r = 0.9992) was established. The characteristic mass was 40 pg Pb and the lifetime of the tube was around 730 firings. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.4 mu g L-1 and the relative standard deviations (n = 12) were typically <8% for a sample containing 25 pg L-1 Pb. Accuracy of the proposed method was checked after direct analysis of 23 vinegar samples. A paired t-test showed that results were in agreement at 95% confidence level with those obtained for acid-digested vinegar samples. The Pb levels varied from 2.8 to 32.4 pg L-1. Accuracy was also checked by means of addition/recovery tests and recovered values varied from 90% to 110%. Additionally, two certified reference materials were analyzed and results were in agreement with certified values at a 95% confidence level. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Making heterolayered perovskite materials constitutes an approach for the creation of better dielectric and ferroelectric properties. In the experiment reported here, heterolayered PZT40/PZT60 films were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (100) by a chemical solution deposition. The dielectric constant of the heterolayered thin film was significantly enhanced compared with that of pure PZT40 and PZT60 thin films. A dielectric constant of 701 at 100 kHz was observed for a stacking periodicity of six layers having a total thickness of 150 nm. The heterolayered film exhibited greater remanent polarization than PZT60 and PZT40 films. The values of remanent polarization were 7.9, 18.5, and 31 muC/cm(2), respectively, for pure PZT60, PZT40, and heterolayered thin films, suggesting that the superior dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the heterolayered thin film resulted from a cooperative interaction between the ferroelectric phases made from alternating tetragonal and rhombohedral phases of PZT, simulating the morphotropic phase boundary of this system. Iridium-, Ru-, and W-coated platforms were prepared by thermal treatment of the transversely heated graphite atomizer and investigated for the simultaneous determination of As, Bi, Pb, Sb, and Se in tap water by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The maximum pyrolysis temperature for As and Bi increased in a modifier sequence W < Ru < Ir. For Pb, Sb, and Se, this sequence was W < Ru, It. Calculated characteristic masses in the presence of It, Ru, and W were 35, 33, and 35 pg for As; 63, 51, and 52 pg for Bi; 50, 32, and 34 pg for Pb; 40, 35, and 31 pg for Sb; and 39, 39, and 93 pg for Se, respectively. Ruthenium was elected as the optimum modifier.Repeatability of the measurements was typically < 6%. Recoveries of As, Bi, Pb, Sb, and Se added to tap water samples varied from 79 to 109%. Accuracy was also checked by analysis of five certified reference materials (CRMs) from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST1640 - Trace Elements in Natural Water; NIST 1643d Trace Elements in Water) and High Purity Standards (Trace Metals in Drinking Water Standards, lots #812708, #591107, and #710710). A paired t-test showed that the results for the CRMs were in agreement at the 95% confidence level with the certified values. The graphite tube lifetime was about 650 firings. multi-element determination is particularly challenging due to the necessity of carefully optimizing compromise conditions.Based on the considerations listed above, the aim of this paper was to evaluate the behavior of Ir, Ru, and W as permanent modifiers for the simultaneous determination of As, Bi, Pb, Sb, and Se. The performance of the proposed procedure was also verified after the ETAAS analysis of tap waters and reference materials.

A method was developed using the multi-element graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry technique for the direct and simultaneous determination of As, Cu, and Pb in Brazilian sugar cane spirit (cachaqa) samples. Also employed was the end-capped transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) with platforms pre-treated with W permanent modifier and co-injection of Pd/Mg(NO3)(2). Pyrolysis and atomization temperature curves were established in a cachaqa medium (1+1; v/v) containing 0.2% (v/v) HNO3 and spiked with 20 mu g L-1 As and Pb and 200 mu g L-1 Cu. The effect of the concentration of major elements usually present in cachaqa matrices (Ca, Mg, Na, and K) and ethanol on the absorbance of As, Cu, and Pb was investigated. Analytical working solutions of As, Cu, and Pb were prepared in 10% (v/v) ethanol plus 5.0 mg L-1 Ca, Mg, Na, and K. Acidified to 0.2% (v/v) HNO3, these solutions were suitable to build calibration curves by matrix matching. The proposed method was applied to the simultaneous determination of As, Cu, and Pb in commercial sugar cane spirits. The characteristic mass for the simultaneous determination was 16 pg As, 119 pg Cu, and 28 pg Pb. The pretreated tube lifetime was about 450 firings. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.6 mu g L-1 As, 9.2 mu g L-1 Cu, and 0.3 pig L-1 Pb. The found concentrations varied from 0.81 to 4.28 mu g L-1 As, 0.28 to 3.82 mg L-1 Cu and 0.82 to 518 mu g L-1 Pb. The recoveries of the spiked samples varied from 94-112% (As), 97-111% (Cu), and 95-101% (Pb). The relative standard deviation (n=12) was 6.9%, 7.4%, and 7.7% for As, Cu, and Pb, respectively, present in a sample at 0.87 mu g L-1, 0.81 mg L-1, and 38.9 mu g L-1 concentrations.

Bismuth was evaluated as an internal standard for the direct determination of Pb in vinegar by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using Ru as a permanent modifier with co-injection of Pd/Mg(NO3)(2). The correlation coefficient of the graph plotted from the non-nalized absorbance signals of Bi versus Pb was r=0.989. Matrix effects were evaluated by analyzing the slope ratios between the analytical curve, and analytical curves obtained from Pb additions in red and white wine vinegar obtained from reference solutions prepared in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3, samples. The calculated ratios were around 1.04 and 1.02 for analytical curves established applying an internal standard and 1.3 and 1.5 for analvtical curves without. Analytical curves in the 2.5-15 pg L-1 Pb concentration interval were established using the ratio Pb absorbance to Bi absorbance versus analvte concentration, and typical linear correlations of r=0.999 were obtained. The proposed method was applied for direct determination of Pb in 18 commercial vinegar samples and the Pb concentration varied from 2.6 to 31 pg L-1. Results were in agreement at a 95% confidence level (paired t-test) with those obtained for digested samples. Recoveries of Pb added to vinegars varied from 96 to 108% with and from 72 to 86% without an internal standard. Two water standard reference materials diluted in vinegar sample were also analyzed and results were in agreement with certified values at a 95% confidence level. The characteristic mass was 40 pg Pb and the useful lifetime of the tube was around 1600 firings. The limit of detection was 0.3 mu g L-1 and the relative standard deviation was <= 3.8% and <= 8.3% (n = 12) for a sample containing, 10 mu L-1 Pb with and without internal standard, respectively. Lead zirconate titanate, Pb(Zr0.3Ti0.7)O-3 (PZT) thin films were prepared with success by the polymeric precursor method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the formation of the PZT perovskite phase. X-ray diffraction revealed that the film showed good crystallinity and no presence of secondary phases was identified. This indicates that the PZT thin films were crystallized in a single phase. PZT thin films showed a well-developed dense grain structure with uniform distribution, without the presence of rosette structure. The Raman spectra undoubtedly revealed these thin films in the tetragonal phase. For the thin films annealed at the 500-700 degreesC range, the vibration modes of the oxygen sublattice of the PZT perovskite phase were confirmed by FT-IR. The room temperature dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the PZT films, measured at 1 kHz were 646 and 0.090, respectively, for thin film with 365 nm thickness annealed at 700 degreesC for 2 h. A typical P-E hysteresis loop was observed and the measured values of P-s, P-r and E-c were 68 muC/cm(2), 44 muC/cm(2) and 123 kV/cm, respectively. The leakage current density was about 4.8 x 10(-7) A/cm(2) at 1.5 V. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

High-quality (Pb, La)TiO3 ferroelectric thin films were successfully prepared on a Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate for the first time by spin coating, using the polymeric precursor method. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the films are polycrystalline in nature. This method allows for low temperature (500 degrees C) synthesis, a high quality microstructure and superior dielectric properties. The effects on the microstructure and electrical properties were studied by changing the La content. The films annealed at 500 degreesC have a single perovskite phase with only a tetragonal or pseudocubic structure. As the La content is increased, the dielectric constant of PLT thin films increases from 570 up to 1138 at room temperature. The C-V and P-E characteristics of perovskite thin films prepared at a low temperature show normal ferroelectric behavior, representing the ferroelectric switching property. The remanent polarization and coercive field of the films deposited decreased due to the transformation from the ferroelectric to the paraelectric phase with an increased La content. Calcium modified lead titanate sol was synthesized using a soft solution processing, the so-called polymeric precursor method. In soft chemistry method, soluble precursors such as lead acetate trihydrate, calcium carbonate and titanium isopropoxide, as starting materials, were mixed in aqueous solution. Pb0.7Ca0.3TiO3 thin films were deposited on platinum-coated silicon and quartz substrates by means of the spinning technique. The surface morphology and crystal structure, dielectric and optical properties of the thin films were investigated. The electrical measurements were conducted on metal-ferroelectric-metal (MFM) capacitors. The typical measured small signal dielectric constant and dissipation factor at a frequency of 100 kHz were 299 and 0.065, respectively, for a thin film with 230 nm thickness annealed at 600degreesC for 2 h. The remanent polarization (2P(r)) and coercive field (E-c) were 32 muC/cm(2) and 100 kV/cm, respectively. Transmission spectra were recorded and from them, refractive index, extinction coefficient, and band gap energy were calculated. Thin films exhibited good optical transmissivity, and had optical direct transitions. The present study confirms the validity of the DiDomenico model for the interband transition, with a single electronic oscillator at 6.858 eV. The optical dispersion behavior of PCT thin film was found to fit well the Sellmeir dispersion equation. The band gap energy of the thin film, annealed at 600degreesC, was 3.56 eV. The results confirmed that soft solution processing provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route for the preparation of PCT thin films.

Different kinds of modifiers and coatings on the integrated platform of transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) have been tested for the simultaneous determination of two group of elements: the first, the more volatile, formed by arsenic, bismuth, lead, antimony and selenium; the second, the less volatile, formed by cobalt, chromium, cupper, iron and manganese in milk by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. Different Rh-modifiers were studied, such as Rh-coated platforms (Rh), carbide plus rhodium coated platforms (W-Rh, Zr-Rh), carbide-coated platforms (W and Zr) with co-injection of RhCl3, solutions and uncoated platforms with injection of solutions of Pd(NO3)(2), Mg(NO3)(2), and RhCl3. Milk samples were diluted 1:10 in 1.0% HNO3 and injected into the tube. The mass of modifier deposited and co-injected in the tube and the use of end capped tubes were also evaluated in order to improve the electrothermal behavior of analytes. Integrated platform pretreated with W plus co-injection RhCl3 for first group and pretreated with W-Rh for second group were elected. For 20 mu L injected samples the analytical curves in the 5.0-20.0 mu g L-1 concentration range have good linear correlation coefficients (r > 0.998). Relative standard deviations (n = 12) are < 6% and the calculated characteristic masses are between 5 pg and 62 pg.

The phase formation mechanism, as well as the morphotropic phase boundary, of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) processed by a partial oxalate method was investigated by simultaneous thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and by qualitative and quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the ZrxTi1-xO2 (ZT) phase reacts with PbO forming the PZT phase without intermediate phases. XRD analysis showed the coexistence of rhombohedral and tetragonal phases for 0.47 ≤ x ≤ 0.55 with the phase boundary composition for x = 0.51. For low calcination temperatures, preferential formation of the PZT rhombohedral phase was observed. A model for phase formation of PZT by the partial oxalate method is proposed based on the existence of two interfaces of reaction (PbO-PZT and PZT-ZT) and diffusion of cations.

A method is described for the simultaneous determination of Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb in mineral water samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) and a longitudinal Zeeman-effect background correction system. The electrothermal behavior of analytes during pyrolysis and atomization steps was studied without modifier, in presence of 5 μg Pd and 3 μg Mg(NO3)2 and in presence of 50 μg NH4H2PO4 and 3 μg Mg(NO3)2. A volume of 20 μL of a 0.028 mol L -1 HNO3 solution containing 50 μg L-1 Ni and Pb, 10 μg L-1 Cr and 5 μg L-1 Cd was dispensed into the graphite tube at 20°C. The mixture palladium/magnesium was selected as the optimum modifier. The pyrolysis and atomization temperatures were fixed at 1000°C and 2300°C, respectively. The characteristic masses were calculated as 2.2 pg Cd, 10 pg Cr, 42 pg Ni and 66 pg Pb and the lifetime of the graphite tube was around 600 firings. Limits of detection based on integrated absorbance were 0.02 μg L-1Cd, 0.94 μg L-1 Cr, 0.45 μg L-1 Ni and 0.75 μg L-1 Pb, which exceeded the requirements of Brazilian Food Regulation that establish the maximum permissible level for Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb at 3 μg L-1, 50 μg L-1, 20 μg L-1 and 10 μg L-1, respectively. The recoveries of Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb added to mineral water samples varied within the 93-108%, 96-104%, 87-101% and 98-108% ranges, respectively. Results of analysis of standard reference materials (National Institute of Standards and Technology: 1640-Trace Elements in Natural Water; 1643d-Trace Elements in Water) were in agreement with certified values at the 95% confidence level.
