Estudo de compósitos de madeira com reforço em bambu para utilização em mobiliário

Bamboo has been studied because of its peculiar mechanical properties and numerous possibilities of use, besides being a fast-growing grass and short cutting cycle. This study aimed to analyze the mechanical characteristics of wood-bamboo composite material, where the samples were developed from the combination of layers of bamboo as a structural reinforcement in solid pieces of pine and EGP panel parts. The species of wood used was Pinus taeda, and the bamboo species Guadua angustifolia and Dendrocalamus giganteus. All work was conducted at the Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP in the laboratory of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Wood. Tests including the density and tension parallel to grain of the bamboo species used and the static bending of composites in order to use this in the furniture industry. For the tests have been used as a basis the requirements of the normative document NBR 7190/97. The values obtained in the tests showed a significant increase in strength and stiffness compared to unreinforced parts, where there was an increase in MOE and MOR in static bending in all specimens used in evidence. The results showed the possibility of reducing sections in furniture components and the possibility of improving the mechanical properties of parts with defects found in wood of Pinus Itapeva region of São Paulo

Introduction: the assessment of the activity of rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis is made by means of different tools, respectively DAS-28 and JADAS.Objective: To compare DAS-28 and JADAS with scores of 71, 27 and 10 joint counts in juvenile idiopathic arthritis.Method: A secondary analysis of a phase III placebo-controlled trial, testing safety and efficacy of abatacept was conducted in 8 patients with 178 assessment visits. Joint count scores for active and limited joints, physician's and parents'global assessment by 0-10 cm Visual Analog Scale, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate normalized to 0-10 scale, in all visits. The comparison among the activity indices in different observations was made through Anova or adjusted gamma model. The paired observations between DAS-28 and JADAS 71, 27 and 10, respectively, were analyzed by linear regression.Results: There were significant differences among individual measures, except for ESR, in the first four months of biological treatment, when five of the eight patients reached ACR-Pedi 30, with improvement. The indices of DAS-28, JADAS 71, 27 and 10 also showed significant difference during follow-up. Linear regression adjusted model between DAS-28 and JADAS resulted in mathematical formulas for conversion: [DAS-28 = 0.0709 (JADAS 71) + 1.267] (R-2 = 0.49); [DAS-28 = 0.084 (JADAS 27) + 1.7404] (R-2 = 0.47) and [DAS-28 = 0.1129 (JADAS-10) + 1.5748] (R-2 = 0.50).Conclusion: The conversion of scores of DAS-28 and JADAS 71, 27 and 10 for this mathematical model would allow equivalent application of both in adolescents with arthritis. Frequency tunable continuous THz wave generation in a periodically poled fiber

An all-fiber approach to terahertz generation using a periodically poled optical fiber is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed approach, a continuous-wave THz wave is generated at a periodically poled fiber by beating two optical wavelengths from two laser sources with the wavelength spacing corresponding to the frequency of the THz wave. The key component in the system is the periodically poled fiber, which is made by a twin-hole fiber with the fiber core residing between two holes. The twin-hole fiber is then thermally poled at a temperature of similar to 260 degrees C with a voltage of 3.3 kV applied to the silver electrodes inside the two holes to introduce second-order nonlinearity. The quasi phase matching (QPM) condition is achieved by periodically erasing the thermal poling induced second-order nonlinearity with an ultraviolet laser, which enhances the energy conversion efficiency. The proposed approach is validated by an experiment. The emission of a THz wave centered at 3.8 THz with an output power of 0.5 mu W is observed. The frequency tunability between 2.2 and 3.8 THz is also experimentally demonstrated.

Red-fleshed sweet orange juice improves the risk factors for metabolic syndrome

Orange juice consumption can promote lower levels of oxidative stress and inflammation due to the antioxidant activity of citrus flavonoids and carotenoids. In addition, red-fleshed sweet orange juice (red orange juice) also contains lycopene. This study investigated the effects of red orange juice consumption on risk factors for metabolic syndrome. Volunteers consumed red orange juice daily for 8 weeks, with clinical and biochemical assessments performed at baseline and on the final day. There was no change in the abdominal obesity, but low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, C-reactive protein decreased, while there was an increase of the antioxidant activity in serum after red orange juice consumption. Insulin resistance and systolic blood pressure were reduced in normal-weight volunteers, while diastolic blood pressure decreased in overweight volunteers after intervention. Red orange juice showed anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering properties that may prevent the development of metabolic syndrome.

Temporomandibular disorders in females: acupuncture compared to occlusal splint

To compare the effect of acupuncture and occlusal splint in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in female patients.Method: Forty-eight female patients (mean age of 39.3±6.8 years) with diagnosed pain in muscles or joint according to RDC/TMD criteria were attended at UNESP - Aracatuba Dental School. Including criteria were reported pain in the chewing muscles and/or in the temporomandibular joint measured by a visual analogue scale (range from 0 to 10) and a reported reduction of the maximum mouth opening. Excluding factors were major occlusal problems, systemic diseases, pregnancy and age below 18 years. After randomization, the first group was treated with acupuncture performed by instructed dentist. The second group was treated with occlusal splint. The outcome variables were assessed at baseline (prior to the first treatment session) and after 1, 3 and 6 months. Primary criteria of success were improvement of mouth opening and pain reduction.Result: Acupuncture group exhibited chewing pain decrease from 5 (at baseline) to 1, 2 and 1 after 1, 3 and 6 months, respectively. In the splint group, chewing pain decreased from 4 to 2, 1 and 2 after 1, 3 and 6 months, respectively. The mouth opening (in mm) increased from 28 (at baseline) to 42, 44 and 46 after 1, 3 and 6 months, respectively in the acupuncture group. In the splint group, mouth opening improved from 29 to 40 after 1 month, and to 43 and 42 after 3 and 6 months. A significant pain reduction was noted for both groups when compared to the baseline (p<.001; Wilcoxon test). Acupuncture group had a significant clinical improvement of opening mouth (Mann-Whitney). Conclusion: The present outcomes suggest a positive association among acupuncture and occlusal splint on the reduction of chewing pain. Acupuncture was more effective in the mouth opening increase.

Depression, family support and hopelessness: a correlated study

This study aimed to verify the relationship between depression, hopelessness and family support. to this aim, were applied the Escala Baptista de Depressão-Adulto EBADEP- A, The Beck Hopelessness Scale –BHS, Inventário de Percepção de Suporte Familiar- IPSF and a sociodemographic questionnaire on a sample of 198 undergraduate of Pharmacy and Psychology courses of a particular university at São Paulo state (Brazil) with mean age of 23.44 years (SD = 6.8), and with a prevalence of women (80.7%). Results showed significant and positive correlations between EBADEP- A and BHS and significant and negative correlations between EBADEP- A/ BHS and IPSF, indicating that the higher perception of family support the fewer depressive symptoms and hopelessness, agreeing with literature.
