This study aimed to contextualize the world's lobster fishing and identify the characteristics of their trades in Santos region (SP). For this purpose, were realized surveys about the captures of 56 years referring the families traded in the world through the informations supplied by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization). To State of São Paulo, consults were made in the data base Propesq (Fishing Institute) about the fishing and prices. Besides interviews in fishmonger, businessmen of fishing and restaurant, we observed the trade and the economical potential compared the lobsters Scyllarides spp. and Panulirus spp. The worldwide the family Nephropidae is the one that has been presenting bigger growth in the captures from 1950 and the one that has the biggest observed captures, the Palinuridae showed a little growth of the captures up to the 80' years, and leaving from there it is oscillating without many expressive changes; Scyllarides began to stand out as fisheries only 70' in Asia, precisely where the other two Families had low catches proportional. In the State of São Paulo, two types of lobsters are sold in Baixada Santista, with conspicuous differences in prices between them. There is also a difference in the flow of trade in relation to active fishing gear. Traders notice a decrease in both abundance and size of individuals of both genders and a clear preference to sell the slippers lobsters (Scyllarides spp.) both for the quality of meat as the lowest price.

Os parâmetros de crescimento e mortalidade foram estimados indiretamente pelas distribuições das frequências de comprimento para espécies de Cichla spp. introduzidas em um lago em Leme (SP) e no reservatório de Volta Grande (SP-MG). em Leme, Cichla kelberi apresentou maior frequência nas classes de comprimentos inferiores, maior taxa instantânea de mortalidade natural e menor número de coortes do que C. kelberi e C. piquiti em Volta Grande. Os valores de performance de crescimento obtidos para as espécies foram próximos, corroborando a validade dos parâmetros estimados de crescimento e de mortalidade. A pressão em crescer rapidamente, devido à predação, aumenta quanto menor e menos diverso for o ambiente. O gênero Cichla adapta-se bem nos locais em que é introduzido, entretanto essa adaptação mostra-se fortemente ajustada a cada ambiente em particular, determinando com isso grande plasticidade e capacidade de estabelecimento.

The use of sugarcane bagasse and grass as low cost raw material for xylanase production by Bacillus circulans D1 in submerged fermentation was investigated. The microorganism was cultivated in a mineral medium containing hydrolysate of bagasse or grass as carbon source. High production of enzyme was obtained during growth in media with bagasse hydrolysates (8.4 U/mL) and in media with grass hydrolysates (7.5 U/mL). Xylanase production in media with hydrolysates was very close to that obtained in xylan containing media (7.0 U/ mL) and this fact confirm the feasibility of using this agro-industrial byproducts by B. circulans D1 as an alternative to save costs on the enzyme production process. The 1.7 angstrom resolution crystal structure of recombinant family G/11 beta-1,4-xylanase (rXynA) from Bacillus subtilis 1A1 shows a jellyroll fold in which two curved P-sheets form the active-site and substrate-binding cleft. The onset of thermal denaturation of rXynA occurs at 328 K, in excellent agreement with the optimum catalytic temperature. Molecular dynamics simulations at temperatures of 298-328 K demonstrate that below the optimum temperature the thumb loop and palm domain adopt a closed conformation. However, at 328 K these two domains separate facilitating substrate access to the active-site pocket, thereby accounting for the optimum catalytic temperature of the rXynA. Application of the xylanase in the pulp bleaching process has been shown to be effective in decreasing the amount of chlorinating agents in the process and improving the brightness of the pulp. The use of thermostable cellulase-free xylanase might enhance both the technical and economic feasibility of the process. In this work an alkalophylic strain of Bacillus sp 77-2, was isolated which showed a high production of xylanase and free cellulases. The xylanase of Bacillus sp displayed an optimum pH of 6.0 (with 70% activity at pH 9.0), all optimum temperature of 60 degrees C, pH stability in the range 5-10 and thermal stability of 50 degrees C. These characteristics are important to the kraft pulp bleaching because they are similar to those found in the industrial paper environment.

Alkalophilic Bacillus licheniformis 77-2 produced an extracellular alkali-tolerant xylanase with negligible cellulase activity in medium containing corn straw. The effectiveness of crude xylanase on treatment of eucalyptus Kraft pulp was evaluated. A biobleaching experiment was carried out to compare the chlorine saving with pulp treated and untreated by the enzyme. Two-stage bleaching was employed, using a ClO2 chlorination and NaOH extraction (DE sequence). With the enzymatic treatment, in order to obtain the same value of Kappa number and brightness, respectively 28.5 and 30% less ClO2 was required in comparison to the enzymatically untreated samples.
