Surgery on the head and neck region may be complicated by vascular trauma, caused by direct injury on the vascular wall. Lesions of the arteries are more dangerous than the venous one. The traumatic lesion may cause laceration of the artery wall, spasm, dissection, arteriovenous fistula, occlusion or pseudoaneurysm. We present a case of a child with a giant ICA pseudoaneurysm after tonsillectomy, manifested by pulsing mass and respiratory distress, which was treated by endovascular approach, occluding the lesion and the proximal artery with Histoacryl. We reinforce that the endovascular approach is the better way to treat most of the traumatic vascular lesions.

Patient perspectives on the treatment options for maxillary defects, which include free tissue transfers or obturator prostheses, may help eliminate current uncertainty as to the best choice of treatment plan. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) of patients with maxillary defects who had undergone restoration with obturator prostheses and/or free tissue transfers. A systematic search of Medline/PubMed and Web of Science databases for articles published before April 2015 was performed by 2 independent reviewers. A manual search of articles published from January 2005 to March 2015 was also conducted. Studies published in English that evaluated the QoL in patients with head and neck cancers were included. The Cohen kappa method was used to calculate inter-reviewer agreement. Ten studies were included. The University of Washington Head and Neck Questionnaire (UW-QOL) was most commonly used to measure QoL. The majority of maxillary defects were Class IIa-b. Two studies reported that the global QoL for patients with obturator prostheses is equivalent to or even better than that of other chronic disease populations. One study revealed no significant difference in QoL when the 2 treatment options were compared. The limited data indicate that the QoL of patients treated with obturator prostheses and that of patients free of tumors is similar. Well-designed clinical studies are necessary to draw definitive conclusions about how obturator prostheses compare with free tissue transfers in terms of affecting patient QoL.

Neoplasias of the head and neck correspond to the fifth most common cancer in the world, with high mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to show, through a literature review, a little about the epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis and therapy of the most common malignant tumors of each anatomical region of the head and neck. The research of the articles was made in MEDLINE data base, with a total of 52 articles used. In this review, we analyze the main aspects related to the tumors of oral cavity, pharynx, larynx and salivary glands. Almost all cancers of the head and neck affecting the mucosa of the upper aerodigestive tract are derived from squamous cells. Therefore, the risk factors between the various types of tumors are similar, with alcohol and tobacco being the main ones. To be composed of several distinct structures, the head and neck tumors deserve a diagnostic and therapeutic approach individualized for each anatomical region. Controllingthe risk factors and doing the right approach, it is expected that the incidence of cancers of the head and neck decreases, thereby reducing mortality from malignant neoplasms worldwide

The diagnosis of head and neck infections constitutes relevant step in their treatment. However, in spite of the fact that most of diseases in head and neck region are infectious in nature, several reasons collaborated for dentists do not ask laboratory tests in order to help clinical diagnosis. By mean of this review literature, based on research articles about the newest and most reliable methods of diagnosis for clinical laboratories, the authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each selected method and the relevant aspects in transportation of the specimens to the laboratory. Saliva, biofilm, pus, and blood are the most frequent specimens for microbial diagnosis, being that the most used methods are culture and those based on detection of deoxyribonucleic acid by polymerase chain reaction method. Whereas, the culture depends on cellular viability, and has reduced sensitivity, as well as needs favorable conditions in the sample collection and transportation, PCR shows high sensitivity and specificity, but it does not allow the determination of antibiogram, what reduces its usefulness. In addition, few laboratories possess conditions to perform cultivation of obligate anaerobes or have experience in the molecular detection of these microorganisms.

This study evaluated the oral conditions of 50 cancer patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy (RT). Clinical examinations were performed before treatment, immediately after 30 days after RT and 6 months after conclusion of RT. Periodontal conditions were evaluated using the criteria of the Periodontal Screening and Recording (SRP) and the need for dental treatment were determined. The presence of xerostomia, mucositis and other side effects of RT were also evaluated. Soon after the beginning of RT, the irradiated patients of radiotherapy developed severe mucositis, dermatitis, dysgeusia, xerostomia and, to a lesser extent, candidosis. After completion of radiotherapy, 68% of patients had level III or IV mucositis. It was found that the development of mucositis hinders oral hygiene and these factors contribute to exacerbate inflammation of periodontal tissues. The data from this study evidenced that the main cause of desertion of RT and of severity of sequelae of RT depends on the oral conditions of patients before starting treatment and the absence of previous dental treatment prior RT.

Birefringence or double refraction is the decomposition of a ray of light into two rays when it passes through an anisotropic material such as quartz. Sperm cells have been demonstrated to be optically anisotropic. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the pattern of human sperm head birefringence (SHBF) and DNA damage. A total of 26 patients with normal semen were included. DNA damage (fragmentation and denaturation) was evaluated in the sperm head in the context of birefringence, both total (SHBF-T) and partial (SHBF-P), by terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUDP nick-end labelling assay and acridine orange fluorescence, respectively. Positive DNA fragmentation in spermatozoa with SHBF-T (205/1053; 19.5%) was significantly higher (P < 0.0001) than in spermatozoa that presented SHBF-P (60/820; 7.3%). However, the percentage of denatured DNA in spermatozoa with SHBF-T (824/1256; 65.6%) was not significantly different from the ones with SHBF-P (666/1009; 66.0%). In conclusion, the data support a positive relationship between spermatozoa with total SHBF in their head and increased DNA fragmentation. (C) 2011, Reproductive Healthcare Ltd. The aim of this study was to determine the role of head, eye and arm movements during the execution of a table tennis forehand stroke. Three-dimensional kinematic analysis of line-of-gaze, arm and ball was used to describe visual and motor behaviour. Skilled and less skilled participants returned the ball to cued right or left target areas under three levels of temporal constraint: pre-, early- and late-cue conditions. In the pre- and early-cue conditions, both high and low skill participants tracked the ball early in flight and kept gaze stable on a location in advance of the ball before ball-bat contact. Skilled participants demonstrated an earlier onset of ball tracking and recorded higher performance accuracy than less skilled counterparts. The manipulation of cue condition showed the limits of adaptation to maintain accuracy on the target. Participants were able to accommodate the constraints imposed by the early-cue condition by using a shorter quiet eye duration, earlier quiet eye offset and reduced arm velocity at contact. In the late-cue condition, modifications to gaze, head and arm movements were not sufficient to preserve accuracy. The findings highlight the functional coupling between perception and action during time-constrained, goal-directed actions.

Most lizards feed on a variety of food items that may differ dramatically in their physical and behavioral characteristics. Several lizard families are known to feed upon hard-shelled prey (durophagy). Yet, specializations toward true molluscivory have been documented for only a few species. As snails are hard and brittle food items, it has been suggested that a specialized cranial morphology, high bite forces, and an adapted feeding strategy are important for such lizards. Here we compare head and skull morphology, bite forces, and feeding kinematics of a snail-crushing teiid lizard (Dracaena guianensis) with those in a closely related omnivorous species (Tupinambis merianae). Our data show that juvenile D. guianensis differ from T. merianae in having bigger heads and greater bite forces. Adults, however, do not differ in bite force. A comparison of feeding kinematics in adult Dracaena and Tupinambis revealed that Dracaena typically use more transport cycles, yet are more agile in manipulating snails. During transport, the tongue plays an important role in manipulating and expelling shell fragments before swallowing. Although Dracaena is slow, these animals are very effective in crushing and processing hard-shelled prey. J. Exp. Zool. 317A:371381, 2012. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
