Bone Morphogenetic Proteins: Structure, biological function and therapeutic applications

Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs) are multifunctional secreted cytokines, which belong to the TGF-beta superfamily. These glycoproteins act as a disulfide-linked homo- or heterodimers, being potent regulators of bone and cartilage formation and repair, cell proliferation during embryonic development and bone homeostasis in the adult. BMPs are promising molecules for tissue engineering and bone therapy. The present review discusses this family of proteins, their structure and biological function, their therapeutic applications and drawbacks, their effects on mesenchymal stem cells differentiation, and the cell signaling pathways involved in this process. Comparison of PCR with stained slides of bone marrow and lymph nodes aspirates with suspect diagnosis for leishmaniasis

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), also known as kala-azar, is a disseminated protozoan infection caused by Leishmania donovani complex. Traditionally the definite diagnosis is made by amastigote detection in the tissue. The aim this study was to evaluate the PCR technique in stained slides of bone marrow and lymph nodes aspirates with suspect diagnosis for leishmaniasis. Slides were selected totaling 62 suspect cases (33 bone marrow samples and 29 lymph node samples) and 17 positive cases (8 bone marrow and 9 lymph node). From 62 suspect cases, 39 (62.90%) were confirmed to be positive being 17 (n = 29) lymph node aspirates and 22 (n = 33) bone marrow. This finding is in agreement with the higher sensitivity of the PCR assay compared to direct microscopic observation. In conclusion, the findings of this study supports the use of PCR on archive cytological preparation stained slides for the diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis, emphasizing the higher sensitivity of this technique when compared to direct microscopic examination and mostly the use of the suspect status for the cytology samples that presents the previously mentioned particularities with focus on detecting the oligosymptomatic or assymptomatic dogs in endemic areas functioning as potential reservoirs for this disease. Brazil has the fourth largest horse herd in the world, this is due the recognition and appreciation that the different equestrian games are having within the country. Injuries of the tendon, especially in the digital flexor tendon, are the main cause of athletic life reduction among horses. The treatment of tendinitis in horses seeks full recovery of the damage tissue reestablishing the function previously lost, however conventional treatments have proven to be ineffective when considered the quality of the scar tissue and the rate of recurrence. Due to this, the use of adult stem cells to the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries of horses has been studied for some time. This method of treatment consists of aspiration of bone marrow or removal of subcutaneous fat tissue and implantation of these cells in the injured tissue. After obtaining the bone marrow the implantation can be performed with total bone marrow, with the mononuclear fraction of MSC or with cells cultured in vitro. From the fat tissue is used the stromal vascular fraction obtained by collagenase digestion, followed or not by cell culture. According to some studies, cell therapy with material obtained from bone marrow or adipose tissue has shown to be viable, given that these materials are abundant in repair components such as mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), growth factors and other components of the collagen matrix. Several studies using both types of cells have shown great potential and promising clinical results. However, knowledge of the biology and characterization of these cells remain largely unknown, and therefore is needed great care and caution when using stem cells for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders in horses

O ensino de matemática: uma proposta para a aprendizagem dos números

The objective of this study is an analysis of the actions of teacherand students when inserted in the teaching-learning in mathematics classes in a class of third year of elementary school. A didactic proposal construction, was developed taking into account the history of the number as a human, considering its evolution through its conceptual nexus, so that the teaching-learning process would enable the construction of theoretical thought. This paper presents a brief study of teacher education, specifically early carrer, basing themselves in difficulties and knowledge of teaching practice and curriculum framework that guided the didactic proposal. Thus, not only students but also teachers are undergoing training. From the study for the preparation of didactic proposal, the proposal development process in teaching and learning skills and analysis of actions, it was possible to follow the movement of formation of a teacher-researcher in early carrer

This experimental project consists of a proposal for an editorial product in a magazine format that approaches in its pages the aspects on the use of social media on internet. For the production of the reports the spheres of sociability, leisure and professional development were explored. The editorial product approached the editorials of sociability, leisure, culture, ethics, consumption, politics and sports. The influence of the social media was demonstrated in the scope of each of these editorials. The magazine, named Follow, was elaborated in order to reach readers ranging from 21 to 60 years old, with an accessible language. The first edition of Follow was concluded in November 2010, with the format 17,5 X 25,4 cm. The magazine has 40 pages of editorial content and 4 pages corresponding to the cover and back cover. Follow’s production proposed itself as a contribution to the practices of editorial innovation in the communication market

Oficinas de férias experimentando genética: avaliação e contribuições para aprendizagem de alunos do ensino médio

Podemos observar que muitos jovens estão dispostos a mudar o mundo, porém, em contraste a essa afirmação, dados demonstram que ainda é grande o número evasão dos mesmos durante o Ensino Médio. Esse fato pode ser atribuído a diferentes motivos: a violência e ingresso na criminalidade, convivência familiar conflitante, má qualidade de ensino, falta de interesse ou a necessidade de trabalhar para ajudar a família ou a si próprio. Outro fator que contribui com a evasão escolar, é a falta de estímulos aos professores que, em geral, vêm sendo desestimulados pela baixa remuneração ou salários pouco atraentes, ausência de um plano de carreira promissor e recompensador, falta de infraestrutura adequada nas escolas e a falta de valorização profissional perante a sociedade, o que, por consequência, desestimula também o ingresso de jovens recém-formados na carreira da licenciatura. Nesse sentido, a necessidade de mecanismos que resgatem a qualidade do ensino nas escolas é eminente e a Universidade pode desempenhar um papel importante, pois representa uma fonte geradora de conhecimento e tecnologia, que nem sempre chegam à população. Assim a difusão de conhecimento e tecnologia, no Ensino Médio, representa um passo promissor na popularização da ciência e o início para a busca do interesse dos jovens ao conhecimento científico e suas tecnologias, através de oficinas e exposições que tem contribuído para a divulgação científica. Este trabalho tem o objetivo de avaliar a apreciação dos alunos do Ensino Médio que participaram de oficinas de férias propostas pelo Projeto de Extensão “Difundindo e popularizando a Ciência”. Recursos tecnológicos: uma abordagem educacional

This study aimed to analyze the use of technological resources by teachers during their daily practice, especially the computer, in public and private elementary schools in Botucatu - SP. We know that today's society, called the Information Society and Knowledge, changes the context of education, since students have access to various information a short time. For this purpose, we use literature as a methodology and data collection through the application of a questionnaire answered by 49 students in public schools, state and private network cited. The choice of the students took place because of the diversity of schools in which they live. Our intention was not to make generalizations, but knowing more about the use of technology in these contexts from the perspective of students. The choice of subject had reason for their timeliness and necessity of knowledge, thus contributing to a comprehensive education and quality. Eles e Elas: comparação intersexual na categorização social e formação das primeiras impressões em seres humanos

O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi compreender, sob uma perspectiva evolucionista, os mecanismos, preferências e as diferenças sexuais subjacentes a uma análise as primeiras impressões em seres humanos. Investigamos: (1) ocorrências de diferenças sexuais na categorização social e na formação das primeiras impressões; (2) a influência do sexo e da cor de pele e (3) ocorrência de preconceitos (com relação ao sexo e/ou a cor de pele do sujeito estímulo) e suas influências na formação das primeiras impressões. Para isso, tratamos de expor uma amostra de 43 indivíduos ( 17 a 34 anos) à oito vídeos (4 perfis: homens negros e brancos, mulheres brancas e negras) com duração de 20’’ cada. Durante o procedimento experimental foi requerido que o participante respondesse a um questionário (escala likert; 0-6). Nesse, o participante avaliava a atratividade física, a competência, sucesso na carreira, agressividade, confiabilidade, atribuía uma nota para a cor da pele, e qualidade geral. Foi feito um teste GLM com medidas repetidas e post hoc teste t student pareado, a fim fazer uma análise mais detalhada das diferenças encontradas nas avaliações. Nossos resultados apontam que a característica que afeta mais a avaliação tanto de homens como das mulheres é a atratividade física, o que foi possível concluir que as outras características em análise é menos dependente da primeira impressão e construída ao longo do convívio. As mulheres tendem a fazer uma avaliação mais minuciosa, o que corrobora outros estudos sobre diferenças sexuais. Devido ao pequeno N, não possível analisarmos a influência da cor da pele do sujeito estímulo na avaliação, evidenciando a necessidade de ampliação futura desse projeto. O perfil dos alunos do curso de Pedagogia da UNESP de Bauru (2007-2010)

The present work aims to expand and contribute to the understanding of issues related to social demands urgent today as regards of teachers’ formation of kindergarten and initial series. Through a survey of the profile of students in four years (2007-2010) of Pedagogy, UNESP, Bauru, I propose to trace discussions about the student profile that seeks to train teacher in higher education. This process will reveal the profile of the student who is preparing to enter the teaching profession and who in later years will work in public and private spheres of education as a teacher, coordinator and manager in the kindergarten and elementary education. For this research will develop both qualitative approach in that it analyzes the profile to the light of the literature and studied quantitatively the extent that is based on the results

Os efeitos de sentido nos textos de Bob Dylan: mito ou ídolo?

Bob Dylan sempre foi identificado como um cantor de protesto, considerado o ícone, o Porta Voz de sua Geração. No entanto, em suas entrevistas ao longo de sua carreira, ele fez questão de refutar tais etiquetas. Esta pesquisa pretendeu compreender a construção do mito Bob Dylan pela mídia, expresso nas formações discursivas das entrevistas e das letras das canções de protesto e examinar a organização dos sentidos de suas entrevistas. O estudo do contexto da época - o período dos anos 1960 nos Estados Unidos da América - permitiu aprofundar a discussão, compreendendo os motivos pelos quais existe um conflito entre o que Bob Dylan faz e o que ele fala. A análise semiótica greimasiana foi o instrumento adotado para desvelar - ou, em uma perspectiva sempre cética como convém à ciência como convém à ciênciaq, para oferecer subsídios que ajudem a explicar a postura contrastante entre o significado das letras e as declarações nas entrevistas. Ao final da pesquisa espera-se ter contribuído para que a relação entre artista e público, mediada pelos meios de comunicação, seja pensada de maneira menos ingênua e mais aprofundada, discutindo a formação de mitos e como eles explicam determinados comportamentos na sociedade

Análise do plano de radioproteção em radioterapia

Ionizing radiation is used nowadays in various sectors such as agriculture, industry and medicine. The main specialties of medicine which use radiation are the diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. Radiotherapy is a therapeutic modality that is a well established feature for the treatment of malignant disease or not. However, the inadvertent use of ionizing radiation can produce deleterious effects that result in sequels that compromise the welfare of the people involved. The analysis of radiological protection emphasizes the importance of avoiding inappropriate exhibitions aimed at protecting the health of patients, the professionals involved and the general public. The basic principles of radioprotection are justification, optimization and restriction for individual dosage. The departments of radiotherapy are regulated in accordance with specific technical standards of the National Commission of Nuclear Energy (CNEN), which during the inspection for issue and renewal of the authorization of operation requires the submission of a radioprotection plan, this document that requires great demand of time, and has generated much debate among professionals in medical physics, given the difficulties encountered in their preparation. After examining the radioprotection plan of some radiotherapy services, as suggested in order to guide those responsible for drawing up these plans, especially beginners in the career of the physics of radiation, this paper presents a model plan that is in line radioprotection it requires the Technical Standards of CNEN and can easily be the reality of appropriate services
