Studies were conducted to identify and characterize different accessions of itchgrass. Seeds were collected in the counties of Aramina, Campinas, Dumont, Igarapava, Jaboticabal, and Ribeirao Preto, all in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Accessions were characterized based on dimensions of their stomata, stomatal index (SI), and length and width of their seed (caryopses and husk). Chromosome number and length also were determined, and accessions were further differentiated using molecular markers (polymerase chain reaction [PCR]). Itchgrass from Ribeirao Preto had much longer and narrower seeds than those from the other locations, and their husks were longer as well. Accessions had similar SIs, both on the abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces. Stomata from Campinas and Igarapava accessions were longer and wider, whereas those from Dumont and Ribeirao Preto were similar and smaller than all others. The accession from Ribeirao Preto is diploid (2n = 20); the rest are polyploid, with the total length of chromosomes smaller than all others. These differences were confirmed by molecular differentiation (PCR).

Synthesis, characterization and thermal behavior of four compounds that have the general formula [Cu{Pd(CN)(4)}(L)(x)](n), in which en = 1,2-diaminoethane and pn = 1,3-diaminopropane (L = en, x = 1 (I); L = pn, x = 1 (II); L = en, x = 2 (III); L = pn, x = 2 (IV)) were described in this work. The complexes were studied by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy (IR), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TG) and the residues of the thermal decomposition were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and found as a mixture of CuO and PdO. The stoichiometry of the compounds was established via thermogravimetric and elemental analyses and their structures were proposed as coordination polymers based on their infrared spectra. The following thermal stability sequence was found: IV < I=II < III.

One new erythrinian alkaloid derivative, (+)-11 alpha-hydroxyerythravine (1), and the known (+)-erythravine (2) and (+)-alpha-hydroxyerysotrine (3) were isolated from the flowers of Erythrina mulungu. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic/spectrometric data interpretation of H-1, C-13, and 2D NMR and MS experiments. The relative configuration was established by NOESY analysis, while the conformation adopted by these molecules was evaluated through molecular modeling studies and coupling constants obtained by NMR analysis. Furthermore, the anxiolytic effects of the E. mulungu aqueous alcoholic crude extract and of the purified alkaloids were evaluated using the elevated T-maze test.

Purpose: To compare the safety and anti-inflammatory efficacy of a single posterior subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) with prednisolone acetate 1% eyedrops after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV).Methods: the study included 40 consecutive phakic eyes of 40 patients undergoing PPV for non-clearing vitreous haemorrhage with attached retina (verified by echography), epiretinal membrane or macular hole. At the end of the surgical procedure, eyes were randomized to receive either a single posterior subtenon injection of TA (40 mg in 1 ml) plus sham eyedrops (prednisolone acetate 1% vehicle) postoperatively (group TA), or a posterior subtenon sham injection (1 ml balanced salt solution) plus prednisolone acetate 1% eyedrops postoperatively (group ED).Results: There was no difference in the severity of anterior chamber cell and flare between the two groups at any time-point during the study period (p > 0.05). Separate within-group analysis revealed a significant decrease in anterior chamber cell and flare from postoperative day 1 to postoperative days 7, 14 and 28 in both groups (p < 0.05). There was no difference in pain, photophobia, conjunctival erythema, ciliary flush or chemosis scores between the two groups at any time-point during the study period (p > 0.05). Steroid-induced intraocular hypertension was not observed in either group.Conclusions: A single posterior subtenon injection of TA can be as effective and safe as a 4-week regimen of prednisolone acetate 1% eyedrops in controlling intraocular inflammation after PPV.

The top faces of float glass samples were exposed to vapors resulting from the decomposition of KNO3 at 565 degrees C for up to 32 h. X-ray dispersive spectra (EDS) show that K+ ions migrate into the glass. The K+ concentration profile was obtained and its diffusion coefficient was calculated by the Boltzmann-Matano technique. The mean diffusion coefficient was approximately 10 X 10(-11) cm(2) s(-1). It was observed that the refractive index and the Vickers hardness decrease with the depth (after the removal of successive layers), and their profiles were thus obtained. These profiles enabled the calculation of the diffusion coefficient of K+ through the Boltzmann-Matano technique, with mean results ranging between 6 x 10(-11) and 30 x 10(-11) cm(2) s(-1). The structures for brevifoliol and three baccatin VI derivatives were revised to possess the novel 11(15 --> 1)-abeotaxane tricylic skeleton based on X-ray crystallographic studies. Four more new rearranged taxane derivatives related to brevifoliol and the unusual phenylbutanoid, (-)-rhododendrol, were isolated from the needles of Taxus breuifolia. Their structures were established as 10 beta-benzoxy-5 alpha-(3'-dimethylamino-3'-phenyl)-propanoxy-1 beta-hydroxy- 7 beta,9 alpha,13 alpha-triacetoxy-11(15 --> 1)-abeotaxa-4(20),11-diene; 10 beta-benzoxy-1 beta-hydroxy-5 alpha-(3'-methylamino-3'-phenyl)- propanoxy-7 beta,9 alpha,l3 alpha-triacetoxy-11(15 --> 1)-abeotaxa-4(20),11-diene; 10 beta-benzoxy-5 alpha-cinnamoxy-1 beta-hydroxy-7 beta,9 alpha,13 alpha-triacetoxy-1 1(15 --> 1)-abeotaxa-4(20),11-diene; 10 beta-benzoxy-1 beta,5 alpha-dihydroxy-7 beta,9 alpha,13 alpha-triacetoxy-11(15 --> 1)-abeotaxa-4(20),11-diene and 2(R)-hydroxy-4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-butane.

Eleven 6-[omega-arylalkenyl]-5,6-dihydro-alpha-pyrones, cryptomoscatones D2, E1, E2, E3 and F1 and cryptopyranmoscatones A1, A2, A3, B1, B2 and B4, in addition to goniothalamin and cryptofolione, were isolated from branch and stem bark of Cryotocarya moschata, Lauraceae. The etoposide is an anticancer drug that interacts with topoisomerase II. Thirty-day-old rats received intraperitonially 2mg/kg of etoposide for 30 consecutive days. Their testes were analyzed in the adult phase under light microscopy according to histomorphometric and stereological parameters. Random 3mum-thick-paraplast sections of testis were stained with periodic acid-Schiff reaction and Harris' hematoxylin method. Serum testosterone level and reproductive performance were also investigated. The results showed an accentuated decrease in the frequency of germinal lineage cell types and differentiated spermatogonia were the most affected cell types. Morphometric and stereological testicular parameters exhibited highly, significant reductions in adult etoposide-treated rats. Their reproductive performance diminished but their serum testosterone level was not significantly altered. The mortality frequency of the progenies was 100%.

2-Deoxyribonolactones and four tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids were isolated from the acetone extract of the leaves of Aristolochia arcuata Mast., together with pinitol, sequoyitol, glycerol, fructose, sucrose, eupomatenoid-7, salsolinol, and 6,7-dihydroxyl,1-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline. From stems of Aristolochia chamissonis Duch., five new diterpenes, one rearranged (4 --> 2)-abeo-clerodane and four ent-clerodanes, were isolated. Their structures were determined to be (+)-(4 --> 2)-abeo-kolavelool-3-oic acid, (-)-13-epi-2-oxokolavelool, (-)-2 beta-hydroxykolavelool, (-)-2 beta-hydroperoxykolavelool and (+)- 13-epi-2 alpha-hydroxykolavelool. The microscopic description of the teeth of pacas (Agouti paca) bred in captivity was developed for providing biological data on one of the largest American wild rodents, as not many references exist in the literature about this species. Two newborn males, two adult males (9 and 72 months old), one newborn female and two adult females (30 and 54 months old) were used after death due to fights, neonatal cannibalism or unknown causes. Animals were radiographed, and their teeth were extracted and put on an acrylic resin block, cut on a diamond-like disc microtome and diaphanized. It was noted that enamel surrounds the coronary dentine and projects to the root region, besides being present as internal laminae, arranged in a parallel way and in the vestibulolingual direction. The dentine is located between the enamel laminae and surrounds the pulp horns. The cementum is located internal to the enamel laminae. From scanning electronic microscopy, we find that the enamel is the outer element on the vestibular surface, and it is in direct contact with the dentine. on the lingual surface, the cementum and dentine are the outer elements.

Three seco-iridoids 7-methoxydidcrrosidc, 6'-O-acetyldiderroside and 8-O-tigloyldiderroside, were isolated from the wood bark of Calycophyllum spruceanum together with the known iridoids loganetin, loganin and the seco-iridoids secoxyloganin, kingiside and diderroside. Their structures were elucidated by means of NMR and MS spectral data analysis. Using NOE correlations and coupling constants, the relative stereochernistry of the new derivatives was established. 7-Methoxydiderroside, 6'-O-acetyldiderroside and the known secoxyloganin and diderroside showed in vitro activity against trypomastigote forms of Trypanosonla Cruzi, with IC50 values of 59.0, 90.2, 74,2 and 84.9 mug/mL, respectively and were compared to the standard gentian violet (IC50 7.5 mug/ml). Based on dynamic rheological measurements, sucrose, glycerol and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) prevented egg yolk gelation at concentrations of 2% and higher, These additives showed improved cryoprotectant effects as their concentrations were increased, Sodium chloride (NaCl) at higher than 2% also prevented gelation but at 10%, it caused a considerable increase in viscosity of unfrozen yolk, Calcium chloride (CaCl2) showed an opposite effect, promoting protein coagulation before freezing, Samples with 2% CaCl2 gelled completely after 36h at -24 degrees C, Before freezing, potassium chloride (KCl) in the range 2-10% had an effect similar to that of NaCl, However, after freezing its effect changed, Yolk with 2% KCl, frozen 36h at -24 degrees C, showed very elastic behavior.

Hybrid stylos (Stylosanthes guianensis var. vulgaris x var. pauciflora) with durable, quantitative resistance to anthracnose, mid-season harvest maturity date (early-July), high DM and seed yields have been selected at the Embrapa Beef Cattle Research Center, Campo Grande, Brazil. The hybrids displayed improved forage traits in Brazil, the native habitat and major center of diversity of the species and its pathogen, as well as in vastly different ecosystems. Dry forage yields and anthracnose resistance of superior selections and their composites were equal, in some instances, significantly better, than those of cv. Mineir (a) over tildeo in multilocational trials situated in the Cerrados from lat. 6degrees S to lat. 20degrees S. Selected hybrids performed well in comparison with the highly successful CIAT 184 (cv.Reyan II) on Hainan Island, China. Composites have also shown good promise in seed multiplication plots in Queensland, Australia. A positive attribute of composite hybrids is their great genetic diversity in contrast to pure-line cultivars with a relatively narrow genetic base. These truly tropical forms of stylo are best adapted to regions with >1500mm average annual rainfall.
