Inflammatory gene variants have been associated with several diseases, including cancer, diabetes, vascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, arthritis, and others. Therefore, determining the population genetic composition of inflammation-related genes can be useful for the determination of general risk, prognostic and therapeutic strategies to prevent or cure specific diseases. We have aimed to identify polymorphism genotype frequencies in genes related to the inflammatory response in the Brazilian population, namely, IjBL - 62AT, IjBL - 262CT, tumor necrosis factors alpha (TNFa) - 238GA, TNFa - 308GA, lymphotoxin-alpha (LTa) + 80AC, LTa + 252AG, FAS - 670AG, and FASL - 844TC, considering the white, black, and Pardo ethnicities of the Sa˜o Paulo State. Our results suggest that the Brazilian population is under a miscegenation process at the current time, since some genotypes are not in the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. In addition, we conclude that the Pardo ethnicity is derived from a complex mixture of ethnicities, including the native Indian population.

Aquaculture practices usually put the Nile tilapia in an artificial social environment, which males predominate due to their faster growth desirable for aquaculture purposes. Such a situation can increase male-male fighting because males are generally more aggressive than females, and also because fighting ability is similar within the same sex, leading to longer contests. As behavior has been used to infer welfare in several fish species, the aim of this study was to investigate whether sex composition affects agonistic interactions, social hierarchy and energetic demand in groups of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus; L.). Size-matched adult fish were divided in two treatments: MM = four males and MF = two males and two females (10 repetitions for each treatment). The experiment lasted for 11 days and social interactions (aggressiveness and rank order) were recorded at the 2nd, 6th and 10th days (15 min per day). Fish were food deprived and body weight loss was used to infer energetic cost. A higher frequency of lateral threat (Student’s t independent test; t = 2.55; p = 0.02) and total interactions (Student’s t independent test; t = -2.81; p = 0.01) was observed in the MF treatment. MM group showed unstable hierarchy (Binomial test, p = 0.04), which is considered a social stressor. However, mean weight loss was not affected by treatments (Student’s t independent test; t = -0.74; p = 0.47). These results support the idea that sexual composition affects aggressive interactions and destabilizes social hierarchy, but not energy cost

In two experiments, the duration of the effect of caffeine (CAF) solutions on larval mortality (LM) of Aedes aegypti was analyzed. In the first, LM was studied using solutions at 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/mL aged from zero to five days in artificial breeding sites exposed to the laboratory environment (LE). In the second, the solutions aged at 1.0, 2.0 and 2.5 mg/mL closed flasks were stored in LE or in the refrigerator (R), and the effect on LM was tested in the experimental breeding sites at 30 days interval. In the first, the duration of the effect increased with the solution age in each CAF concentration. CAF at 1.0 and 2.0 mg/mL, without addition of food, produced 100% LM until 25 days after preparation; with food, at 11 and 18 days, respectively. In the second the effectiveness of CAF solutions lasted up to the seventh month, irrespective of whether they were stored in R or in LE. No adult emerged at any of the CAF concentrations used in second experiment.

This study evaluated the effects of LLLT on the expressionof inflammatory cytokines related to the development of oralmucositis by gingival fibroblasts. Primary gingival fibroblastswere seeded on 24-well plates (105cells/well) for 24 h. Freshserum-free culture medium (DMEM) was then added, andcells were placed in contact with LPS (Escherichia coli,1 lgmL1), followed by LLLT irradiation (LaserTABLE—InGaAsP diode prototype—780 nm, 25 mW) delivering 0,0.5, 1.5 or 3 J cm². Cells without contact with LPS werealso irradiated with the same energy densities. Gene expres-sion of TNF- a, IL-1b, IL-6 and IL-8 was evaluated by Real-Time PCR, and protein synthesis of these cytokines wasdetermined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) assay.Data were statistically analyzed by the Kruskal– Wallis test, complemented by the Mann–Whitney test (P < 0.05). LPStreatment increased the gene expression and protein synthesisof TNF-a, IL-6 and IL-8, while the expression of IL-1b wasnot affected. For LPS-treated groups, LLLT promoted signif-icant decreases in the expression of TNF-a, IL-6, and IL-8 at1.5 J cm2and 3 J cm2. These results demonstrate thatLLLT promoted a beneficial biomodulatory effect on theexpression of inflammatory cytokines related to oral mucosi-tis by human gingival fibroblasts.

Objective: The aim of this study to investigate the effects of different polymerization protocols on the cuspal movement in class II composite restorations. Materials and methods: Human premolar teeth were prepared with class II cavities and then restored with composite and three-step and two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive systems under different curing techniques (n = 10). It was used a lightemittingdiode curing unit and the mode of polymerization were: standard (exposure for 40 seconds at 700 mW/cm2), pulse-delay (initial exposure for 6 seconds at 350 mW/cm2 followed by a resting period of 3 minutes and a final exposure of 37 seconds at 700 mW/cm2) and soft-start curing (exposure 10 seconds at 350 mW/cm2 and 35 seconds at 700 mW/cm2). The cuspal distance (µm) was measured before and after the restorative procedure and the difference was recorded as cuspal movement. The data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test (p < 0.05). Results: The type of adhesive system did not influenced the cuspal movement for all the curing methods. Standard protocol showed the highest values of cuspal movement and was statistically different from the pulse-delay and soft-start curing modes. Conclusion: Although the cuspal displacement was not completely avoided, alternative methods of photocuring should be considered to minimize the clinical consequences of composites contraction stress.

Objective: To understand the practices related to late-onset sepsis (LOS) in the centers of the Brazilian Neonatal Research Network, and to propose strategies to reduce the incidence of LOS.Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive multicenter study approved by the Ethics Committee. Three questionnaires regarding hand hygiene, vascular catheters, and diagnosis/treatment of LOS were sent to the coordinator of each center. The center with the lowest incidence of LOS was compared with the others. Results: All 16 centers answered the questionnaires. Regarding hand hygiene, 87% use chlorhexidine or 70% alcohol; alcohol gel is used in 100%; 80% use bedside dispensers (50% had one dispenser for every two beds); practical training occurs in 100% and theoretical training in 70% of the centers, and 37% train once a year. Catheters: 94% have a protocol, and 75% have a line insertion team. Diagnosis/treatment: complete blood count and blood culture are used in 100%, PCR in 87%, hematological scores in 75%; oxacillin and aminoglycosides is the empirical therapy in 50% of centers. Characteristics of the center with lowest incidence of LOS: stricter hand hygiene; catheter insertion and maintenance groups; use of blood culture, PCR, and hematological score for diagnosis; empirical therapy with oxacillin and aminoglycoside. Conclusion: The knowledge of the practices of each center allowed for the identification of aspects to be improved as a strategy to reduce LOS, including: alcohol gel use, hand hygiene training, implementation of catheter teams, and wise use of antibiotic therapy.
