We construct static and time-dependent exact soliton solutions with nontrivial Hopf topological charge for a field theory in 3 + 1 dimensions with the target space being the two dimensional sphere S(2). The model considered is a reduction of the so-called extended Skyrme-Faddeev theory by the removal of the quadratic term in derivatives of the fields. The solutions are constructed using an ansatz based on the conformal and target space symmetries. The solutions are said self-dual because they solve first order differential equations which together with some conditions on the coupling constants, imply the second order equations of motion. The solutions belong to a sub-sector of the theory with an infinite number of local conserved currents. The equation for the profile function of the ansatz corresponds to the Bogomolny equation for the sine-Gordon model.

A systematic construction for an action describing a class of supersymmetric integrable models as well as for pure fermionic theories is discussed in terms of the gauged WZNW model associated to half integer graded affine Kac-Moody algebras. Explicit examples of the N = 1. 2 super-sinh(sine)-Gordon models are discussed in detail. Pure fermionic theories arises for cosets sl(p, 1)/sl(p) circle times u(1) when a maximal kernel condition is fulfilled. The integrability condition for such models is discussed and it is shown that the simplest example when p = 2 (cads to the constrained Bukhvostov-Lipatov, Thirring, scalar massive and pseudo-scalar massless Gross-Neveu models. Traditional cutoff regularization schemes of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model limit the applicability of the model to energy-momentum scales much below the value of the regularizing cutoff. In particular, the model cannot be used to study quark matter with Fermi momenta larger than the cutoff. In the present work, an extension of the model to high temperatures and densities recently proposed by Casalbuoni, Gatto, Nardulli, and Ruggieri is used in connection with an implicit regularization scheme. This is done by making use of scaling relations of the divergent one-loop integrals that relate these integrals at different energy-momentum scales. Fixing the pion decay constant at the chiral symmetry breaking scale in the vacuum, the scaling relations predict a running coupling constant that decreases as the regularization scale increases, implementing in a schematic way the property of asymptotic freedom of quantum chromodynamics. If the regularization scale is allowed to increase with density and temperature, the coupling will decrease with density and temperature, extending in this way the applicability of the model to high densities and temperatures. These results are obtained without specifying an explicit regularization. As an illustration of the formalism, numerical results are obtained for the finite density and finite temperature quark condensate and applied to the problem of color superconductivity at high quark densities and finite temperature.

An exactly solvable quantum field theory (QFT) model of Lee type is constructed to study how neutrino flavor eigenstates are created through interactions and how the localization properties of neutrinos follows from the parent particle that decays. The two-particle states formed by the neutrino and the accompanying charged lepton can be calculated exactly as well as their creation probabilities. We can show that the coherent creation of neutrino flavor eigenstates follows from the common negligible contribution of neutrino masses to their creation probabilities. on the other hand, it is shown that it is not possible to associate a well-defined flavor to coherent superpositions of charged leptons.

Gaussianity and statistical isotropy of the Universe are modern cosmology's minimal set of hypotheses. In this work we introduce a new statistical test to detect observational deviations from this minimal set. By defining the temperature correlation function over the whole celestial sphere, we are able to independently quantify both angular and planar dependence (modulations) of the CMB temperature power spectrum over different slices of this sphere. Given that planar dependence leads to further modulations of the usual angular power spectrum C(l), this test can potentially reveal richer structures in the morphology of the primordial temperature field. We have also constructed an unbiased estimator for this angular-planar power spectrum which naturally generalizes the estimator for the usual C(l)'s. With the help of a chi-square analysis, we have used this estimator to search for observational deviations of statistical isotropy in WMAP's 5 year release data set (ILC5), where we found only slight anomalies on the angular scales l = 7 and l = 8. Since this angular-planar statistic is model-independent, it is ideal to employ in searches of statistical anisotropy (e.g., contaminations from the galactic plane) and to characterize non-Gaussianities.

The time evolution of the matter produced in high energy heavy-ion collisions seems to be well described by relativistic viscous hydrodynamics. In addition to the hydrodynamic degrees of freedom related to energy-momentum conservation, degrees of freedom associated with order parameters of broken continuous symmetries must be considered because they are all coupled to each other. of particular interest is the coupling of degrees of freedom associated with the chiral symmetry of QCD. Quantum and thermal fluctuations of the chiral fields act as noise sources in the classical equations of motion, turning them into stochastic differential equations in the form of Ginzburg-Landau-Langevin (GLL) equations. Analytic solutions of GLL equations are attainable only in very special circumstances and extensive numerical simulations are necessary, usually by discretizing the equations on a spatial lattice. However, a not much appreciated issue in the numerical simulations of GLL equations is that ultraviolet divergences in the form of lattice-spacing dependence plague the solutions. The divergences are related to the well-known Rayleigh-Jeans catastrophe in classical field theory. In the present communication we present a systematic lattice renormalization method to control the catastrophe. We discuss the implementation of the method for a GLL equation derived in the context of a model for the QCD chiral phase transition and consider the nonequilibrium evolution of the chiral condensate during the hydrodynamic flow of the quark-gluon plasma.

Inspired by analytic results obtained for a systematic expansion of the memory kernel in dissipative quantum mechanics, we propose a phenomenological procedure to incorporate non-markovian corrections to the Langevin dynamics of an order parameter in field theory systematically. In this note, we restrict our analysis to the onset of the evolution. As an example, we consider the process of phase conversion in the chiral transition.

We consider an electric charge rotating around a Schwarzschild black hole. We compute, using quantum field theory in curved spacetime at the tree level, the power emitted by the rotating charge minimally coupled to the Maxwell field. We also compute how much of the radiation emitted by the swirling charge is absorbed by the black hole.

We compute the partition function of an anyon-like harmonic oscillator. The well known results for both the bosonic and fermionic oscillators are then re-obtained as particular cases of our function. The technique we employ is a non-relativistic version of the Green function method used in the computation of one-loop effective actions of quantum field theory.

We study the regularization ambiguities in an exact renormalized (1 + 1)-dimensional field theory. We show a relation between the regularization ambiguities and the coupling parameters of the theory as well as their role in the implementation of a local gauge symmetry at quantum level.

Vertex corrections are taken into account in the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the nucleon propagator in a relativistic field theory of fermions and mesons. The usual Hartree-Fock approximation for the nucleon propagator is known to produce the appearance of complex (ghost) poles which violate basic theorems of quantum field theory. In a theory with vector mesons there are vertex corrections that produce a strongly damped vertex function in the ultraviolet. One set of such corrections is known as the Sudakov form factor in quantum electrodynamics. When the Sudakov form factor generated by massive neutral vector mesons is included in the Hartree-Fock approximation to the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the nucleon propagator, the ghost poles disappear and consistency with basic requirements of quantum field theory is recovered.

The polymeric precursor method was successfully used to synthesize CoxZn7-xSbO12 (x = 0-7) powders. Pigments were evaluated using colorimetry, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis and infrared spectroscopy. The optical band gap values vary with the Co2+ substitution. These results suggest that the concomitant presence of Co and Zn in the spinel lattice leads to the rupture of the Vegard law, as well as other properties of the studied system, such as unit cell volume. The Co-richer samples display a higher absorbance than the Co-lean samples. The high absorption of the Co7Sb2O12 sample at most of the visible region makes this compound a candidate for a black pigment. It was shown that color depends on the site where the chromophore ion is located, in agreement with the ligand field theory. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
