A reformulation of the bounded mixed complementarity problem is introduced. It is proved that the level sets of the objective function are bounded and, under reasonable assumptions, stationary points coincide with solutions of the original variational inequality problem. Therefore, standard minimization algorithms applied to the new reformulation must succeed. This result is applied to the compactification of unbounded mixed complementarity problems. © 2001 OPA (Overseas Publishers Association) N.V. A study was conducted on the dynamics of 2D and 3D Bose-Einstein condensates in the case when the scattering length in the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation which contains constant (dc) and time-variable (ac) parts. Using the variational approximation (VA), simulating the GP equation directly, and applying the averaging procedure to the GP equation without the use of the VA, it was demonstrated that the ac component of the nonlinearity makes it possible to maintain the condensate in a stable self-confined state without external traps.

We study the existence of periodic solutions in the neighbourhood of symmetric (partially) elliptic equilibria in purely reversible Hamiltonian vector fields. These are Hamiltonian vector fields with an involutory reversing symmetry R. We contrast the cases where R acts symplectically and anti-symplectically. In case R acts anti-symplectically, generically purely imaginary eigenvalues are isolated, and the equilibrium is contained in a local two-dimensional invariant manifold containing symmetric periodic solutions encircling the equilibrium point. In case R acts symplectically, generically purely imaginary eigenvalues are doubly degenerate, and the equilibrium is contained in two two-dimensional invariant manifolds containing nonsymmetric periodic solutions encircling the equilibrium point. In addition, there exists a three-dimensional invariant surface containing a two-parameter family of symmetric periodic solutions.
