An outbreak of botulism was detected in goats in the semiarid region of Brazil. In a flock of 460 goats, 38 does were affected and 37 died. Kids and younger goats were not affected. The main clinical signs were flaccid tetraparesis leading to tetraplegia that was often accompanied by twisted neck, tongue paralysis, and muscle tremors. At the time of the visit, 4 out of 11 affected goats were recumbent. Ambulatory goats had uncoordinated and swaying gaits with hypometria and weakness, mainly of the hind limbs. Two recumbent and four ambulatory goats showed twisted neck. Two recumbent goats were euthanized and necropsied. Non-significant gross and histologic lesions were observed. Samples of the liver, gut and rumen content were collected from the two goats and examined for botulinum toxins using the mouse serum neutralization test. The three samples from one goat were positive for type C toxin. Marked osteophagia was observed when the goats had access to bones in the pasture, and the farmer mentioned that osteophagia was common among goats of the flock. A sample of the plant Hybantus ipecaconha, the most abundant forage available for the goats, contained 2800 mg/kg of Ca and 450 mg/kg of P. One soil sample contained 58.12 mg/kg of Ca and 2.02 mg/kg of P. It was concluded that in this outbreak, botulism was associated with osteophagia probably due to phosphorus deficiency. The human papillomavirus (HPV) has been historically associated with head and neck cancers, although its role in oral carcinogenesis remains poorly defined. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of HPV in mouth floor squamous cell carcinoma and correlate it with clinicopathologic variables, risk factors and survival. HPV presence was evaluated by nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) in 29 paraffin-embedded specimens of mouth floor squamous cell carcinoma. HPV DNA was detected in 17.2% (5 of 29) of the specimens; the highest prevalence was observed in non-smoking patients over the age of 60 years. All HPV DNA positive specimens were detected in men with clinical stage III and IV lesions, being most of which were moderately differentiated. Despite this correlation there were no statistically significant differences observed among the analyzed variables, including patients' survival. The relatively low incidence of HPV DNA present in these tumors suggests that this virus does not, by itself, have a significant role in the development of mouth floor squamous cell carcinoma. The effects of fipronil (Frontline (R) Top Spot) were investigated in 40 days old rats utilizing open field (OF), hole-board (HB) and elevated plus-maze (EPM) apparatus. Rats (N=15) received topical application of fipronil (70, 140 and 280 mg/kg) in the neck region and behavior was tested 3 h after administration. Animals treated with corn oil (vehicle) were used as controls. In the of test animals treated with fipronil at 140 mg/kg showed increased rearing, whereas animals exposed to 280 mg/kg showed increased freezing, grooming, and rearing. In the HB test fipronil at 280 mg/kg increased head-dip and head-dipping behaviors. In the EPM test the only observed effect was increased number of entries in both open and closed EPM arms in animals treated with 280 mg/kg. In conclusion, dermal exposure to fipronil causes effects related to emotionality, fear, and exploratory activity; results add strength to the growing concern that pirazole insecticides can be neurotoxic to humans. In the course of an investigation on lizard spermiogenesis, the authors have observed events connected with the differentiation of the acrosome and middle-piece of the spermatozoa. Some differences from other reptilians were found as well as: the presence of a subacrosomal space, the absence of the fibrous sheath in the middle-piece, and a very short neck in the mature spermatozoa.

The spondylothoracic dysplasia syndrome is characterized by congenital malformations of vertebrae and ribs. As a consequence of the anomalous development of the vertebral column, the neck and thorax are short, and the normal head looks as if emerging from the shoulders. The thorax is short and asymmetric with an increased anteroposterior diameter. Dorsolumbar lordosis and a protuberant abdomen are present. The extremities though normal in length appear long relative to the shortened trunk. Short stature results from the vertebral abnormalities. The syndrome was seen in 2 siblings of nonconsanguineous parents.

In the present work the authors studied the morphology of the cervical lymphatic system using 26 new-born white rats of both sexes. The studies were performed by injecting China-ink under the skin of the angle of mouth and dorsal region of the auricle in order to visualize and then to proceed the dissection of lymph vessels and nodes under stereoscopic microscope. Morphological descriptions of superficial and deep lymph vessels and lymph nodes were made, recording: a dense capillary network of the superficial system that joins to larger branches going to the submaxillary lymph nodes, generally the only ones on each side; those lymph nodes send efferent branches to deep cervical lymph nodes generally also the only ones on each side; those lymph nodes give efferent branches which form the jugular lymphatic sac that joins the jugulo-subclavian junction; the jugular lymphatic sac may receive branches from the plexus, which accompany the omocervical and external jugular veins and branches coming from the thoracic limb, as well as may join the branches coming from the thorax and the branches in most of the cases form plexus branches and seldom appear by themselves.

The various pull-through techniques used to measure pressure and length of the upper esophageal sphincter have not been studied in depth. Because of the importance of obtaining further information about these techniques, a group of 25 dogs was submitted to upper esophageal sphincter pressure and length measurements by three different pull-through techniques (two of the continuous type and one of the station type), each with three replications per animal, to determine possible differences among techniques. A single introduction provided reliable results, with no sequential effect of the measurements or of any one technique on resting pressure. However, each technique yielded different sphincter lengths, higher values being obtained when the continuous techniques were used.

This paper reviews the influence of particle size distribution, agglomerates, rearrangement, sintering atmospheres and impurities on the pore evolution of some commonly studied oxides. These factors largely affect sintering mechanisms due to modifications of diffusion coefficients or evaporation-condensation. Very broad particle size distribution leads to grain growth and agglomerates densify first. Rearrangement of particles due to neck asymmetry mainly in the early stage of sintering is responsible for a high rate of densification in the first minutes of sintering by collapse of large pores. Sintering atmospheres play an important role in both densification and pore evolution. The chemical interaction of water molecules with several oxides like MgO, ZnO and SnO2 largely affects surface diffusion. As a consequence, there is an increase in the rates of pore growth and densification for MgO and ZnO and in the rate of pore growth for SnO2. Carbon dioxide does not affect the rate of sintering of MgO but greatly affects both rates of pore growth and densification of ZnO. Oxygen concentration in the atmosphere can especially affect semiconductor oxides but significantly affects the rate of pore growth of SnO2. Impurities like chlorine ions increase the rate of pore growth in MgO due to evaporation of HCl and Mg(OH)Cl, increasing the rate of densification and particle cuboidization. CuO promotes densification in SnO2, and is more effective in dry air. The rate of densification decrease and pore widening are promoted in argon. An inert atmosphere favors SnO2 evaporation due to reduction of CuO. © 1990.

In the present study we report the experience of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, University Hospital, Botucatu School in 19 cases of laryngotracheal stenosis. Fifteen cases had subglottic stenosis, one had stenosis of inferior tracheal and subglottic, one had stenosis of trachea and two others had extensive involvement of larynx and trachea due to chronic inflammatory disease. In eleven patients a laryngotracheal reconstrutive technique with costal cartilagem graft was performed with good results. The major technical difficulties, occurring mainly in children, were the withdrawal of the cannula of the tracheostomy due to granulation tissue formation and the subglottic partial stenosis after surgical reconstruction.

Morphologies of SrTiO3 particles and agglomerates synthesized by the traditional Pechini route and by the polymer precipitation route were characterized by the nitrogen adsorption/desorption technique and by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A cluster structure of nanometric particles forming large agglomerates which are broken during pressing followed by cluster rearrangement was observed. The mean particle size is larger for SrTiO3 obtained by the Pechini route and is related to the precursor thermal decomposition and particle growth during calcination. The particle growth is controlled by neck growth among particles and further motion of the particle boundary. © 1995.
