Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of ProTaper universal retreatment system in the removal of root canal filling material with thermomechanical compaction, in comparison to manualmechanical technique, associated with orange oil or eucalyptol. Materials and methods: Forty extracted lower incisors were filled with thermomechanical compaction technique. After 3 years, the root canal filling was removed by: G1 - manualmechanical technique with orange oil; G2 - manual-mechanical technique with eucalyptol; G3 - ProTaper universal retreatment system with orange oil and G4 - ProTaper universal retreatment system with eucalyptol. In sequence, all root canals were instrumented to F5 instrument. The teeth were longitudinally grooved, images of buccal half were obtained in stereomicroscope and covered area by root canal filling material was measured using image tool software, in cervical, middle and apical radicular thirds. The results were subjected ANOVA and Tukey test (p = 0.05). Results: In all thirds, the manual-mechanical technique showed lower presence of root canal filling material on root canal dentin in comparison to ProTaper retreatment universal system, regardless of organic solvent used (p < 0.05). There is no difference between organic solvents in removal root canal filling material (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The ProTaper universal retreatment system showed lower effectiveness in removal root canal filling material than manual-mechanical technique, regardless of organic solvents (orange oil or eucalyptol oil) used. Clinical significance: Recently rotary instruments have been proposed to removal of root canal filling material. However, there are no studies evaluating its effectiveness in removal root canal filling material in association with orange oil or eucalyptol oil.

This case report presents an apical radicular perforation management using new calcium silicate-based cement (Biodentine) in a combined endodontic-periodontal lesion. The presence of apical radicular perforation may interfere in the endodontic treatment prognosis. Radicular perforation filling with bioactive cement through endodontic surgery is a possible treatment. This study presents an apical radicular perforation with periodontal involvement, due to alveolar bone loss on the buccal radicular surface from an incorrect intracanal preparation for the fiber post placing. The chosen alternative was a periapical surgery, the perforation was filled with a silicate and calcium chloride bioactive cement (Biodentine; Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fosses Cedex, France), and the radicular surface was etched with citric acid, because the access from root canal was impossible. The follow-up was for 8 months, through clinical and radiographic analysis. At the end of the follow-up, radiographic analyses showed the bone healing, and no clinical changes in periodontal probing depth, gingival recession, and the height of the interproximal mesial and distal papillae were observed. The root perforation treatment has a difficult management, especially when the dental root has a simultaneous periodontal commitment. The Biodentine proves to be a promising material for use in these situations.

The apical surgery with simultaneous root filling consists in the elimination of the local etiologic factors concomitant with the shaping and obturation of the root canal system. This technique is indicated when there is no possibility of obturating the root canal by conventional methods. Some adverse factors may difficult the clinical procedures, such as the radiographic interpretation. Periapical radiographs must not be used as the main diagnostic resource due to their inherent disadvantages, such as distortion and superimposition with other anatomical structures. The aim of this clinical case report is to show the limitations of radiographic examination in an apical surgery in which a root perforation was not visible in the radiographic image, as well as the gutta-percha was not related to its real clinical location.

Anachoresis is the phenomenon through which blood-borne bacteria, dyes, pigments and other materials are attracted and fixed to circumscribed areas of inflammation. This study evaluated the occurrence of anachoresis in the periapical region of dogs submitted to root canal fillings. One hundred and four roots from four dogs were endodontically treated and root canals were filled with zinc-oxide-eugenol cement. Fifty percent were filled up to the dentinocemental junction and the others were overfilled. At 120 days after root canal treatment, experimental bacteremia was induced by intravenous inoculation of 105 CFU Streptococcus pyogenes. The dogs were sacrificed 48 hours and 30 days after the bacteremia. Culture and DNA amplification by PCR revealed the presence of the inoculated bacteria just in periapical tissues of dogs sacrificed 48 hours after bacteremia and not in animals sacrificed after 30 days. AP-PCR fingerprints of recovered colonies of S. pyogenes and the presence of genetic markers of resistance to antimicrobials were similar to the inoculated strain. Endodontically treated periapices seemed to be prone to the occurrence of anachoresis and there was no relationship between the phenomenon and the level of root canal filling.

In reforesting companies (cellulose industry), eucalyptus is usually cultivated in small plastic containers (50 mL). As seedlings remain for about 120 days in these containers-until transplantation-their roots become space restricted, with consequent limitations in water and nutrient absorption. These restrictions may lead to plant stress, decreasing productivity. In this work, we used the photoacoustic technique to evaluate the photosynthetic activity of Eucalyptus grandis, E. urophylla and E. urograndis seedlings subjected to this limited space availability, seeking a correlation with morphological parameters and fluorescence measurements in these seedlings. Photoacoustic, fluorescence, and morphological analysis were conducted every 15 days, from 45 to 120 days after sowing. Fluorescence and photosynthetic rate were evaluated in vivo and in situ, the latter one using the open photoacoustic technique. Data show that root dry matter diminished markedly at 90 and 120 days after sowing; this behavior showed a high correlation with the gas exchange component of the photoacoustic signal, as well as with the fluorescence ratio Fv/Fm. These results indicate that the soil volume of the container becomes insufficient for the roots after 90 days, probably leading to a nutritional deficiency in plants, which explains the decrease observed in the photosynthetic rate of seedlings. O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de verificar a influência do uso contínuo de vários herbicidas residuais, sobre a distribuição das radicelas de laranjeiras Natal (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) enxertadas sobre limão Cravo (Cithus limonia Osbeck) e plantadas em janeiro de 1970. O experimento foi instalado no pomar de produção da Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias do Campus de Jaboticabal (UNESP), em Latossol Roxo distrófico, com 1,6% de matéria orgânica e 51% de argila. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, dentro de um esquema fatorial 11x 3x2x2, com três repetições. Os tratamentos utilizados, com as respectivas doses em kg do i.a/ha foram: fluometuron a 4,2; simazíne a 4,8; atrazine a 4,8; bromacil a 3,2;bromacil (40%) + diuron (40%) a 4,8; bromacil (53,3%) + diuron (27,6%) a 4,8; terbacil a 3,2; oxadiazon a 1,5; dichlobenil a 3,0 e 6,0; além de uma testemunha capinada. O estudo das radicel as foi feito pelo método do trado, tendo sido tomadas amostras de solo contendo radicelas, nas distâncias de 80, 160 e 240 cm do tronco, nas camadas de 0 a 15 cm e 15 a 30 cm de profundidade e em duas direções distintas (entrelinhas e entreplantas). Os resultados mostraram que as radicelas localizam-se superficialmente, com 70% delas nos primeiros 15 cm, do total encontrado na camada superficial de 0 a 30 cm de profundidade do solo. Cerca de 75% das radicelas situam-se até a distância de 160 cm do tronco. Na camada mais superficial do solo (0 a 15 cm), a quantidade de radicelas diminuiu de maneira acentuada, à medida que se afastou do tronco. Na camada de 15 a 30 cm de profundidade, ocorreu uma distribuição horizontal mais uniforme, comparada com a da camada de 0 a 15 cm. As radicelas das plantas do cultivar Natal distribuiram-se uniformemente, tanto na direção das plantas da linha vizinha, quanto nas das plantas de uma mesma linha, para o espaçamento de 7,0 m x 7,2 m. Não se detectaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas nas quantidades de radicelas entre as parcelas dos vários tratamentos com herbicidas, excluindo-se desta forma, qualquer efeito negativo de tais produtos químicos sobre o sistema radicular das laranjeiras.

O conhecimento da distribuição do sistema radicular de plantas, principalmente de perenes, não é muito estudado, devido a inúmeros fatores, dentre os quais, a dificuldade inerente ao método de amostragem. A presente pesquisa objetivou conhecer o sistema radicular da goiabeira através do método de escavação. Utilizando jatos de água, retirou-se a terra até um volume de 10 m³ (5x5x0,4m), subdivididos em paralelepípedos de 0,1 m³ (0,5x0,5x0,4m), expondo o sistema radical da goiabeira 'Rica'. Verificou-se um vigoroso sistema radicular sem a caracterização da raiz principal e com distribuição homogênea, grande número de raízes primárias, proporcionado pela adequada formação de mudas, através de estaquia herbácea.
