Supersymmetric quantum mechanics and partially solvable potential

Supersymmetric quantum mechanics can be used to obtain the spectrum and eigenstates of one-dimensional Hamiltonians. It is particularly useful when applied to partially solvable potentials because a superalgebra allows us to compute the spectrum state by state. Some solutions for the truncated Coulomb potential, an asymptotically linear potential, and a nonpolynomial potential are shown to exemplify the method.

BIOSENSORS FOR GLUCOSE NEEDLE-SHAPED FOR IN-VIVO MONITORING

Different procedures for obtaining a needle biosensor for the determination of glucose to be inserted subcutaneously in vivo, have been compared. Platinum wires with a diameter of 75 mum, teflon-coated were inserted in hypodermic needles and fixed with a two-component epoxy resin. Using a dip-coating procedure, several layers were deposited on electrodes. The first coating was cellulose acetate, the second was immobilized glucose oxidase (GOD) mixed with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and glutaraldheyde, the third coating was a polyurethane coating obtained with commercially available products. A large number of electrodes have been tried and statistically evaluated but they seem to be affected by poor reproducibility evidenced by a large spreading in successive calibration curves. Then, the polyurethane coating has been replaced by a thin polycarbonate membrane salinized and fixed on the tip of the needle. Reproducible results were achieved and first results of in vivo measurements on rabbits are reported.

Phenological aspects of Syngonanthus elegans (Bong.) Ruhl. (Eriocaulaceae) from Serra do Cipo - MG. Brazil

S. elegans (Eriocaulaceae) is known in Brazil as star flower and is used economically for ornamental purposes. The fact that there is no control over its collection, brings about great damage to its population. Thus the importance of phenologic data for the conservation of the species. This paper reports the marking of 60 individuals in three different phases of development and the collection of monthly data about their phenology. S. elegans is a perennial plant with a rhizomatous stem that characterizes its vegetative growth. The pubescent leaves present in plants can prevent heat loss and their pigments can raise the ultra-violet radiation absorption. The young leaves present in plants during the begining of the dry season use rhizome reserves. Hydric scarcity may be the main reason for the mortality of the species. Vegetative growth and sexual reproduction are very important for the population's survival.,The blooming period in S. elegans occurs from om February to July and the dispersal of seeds occurs from August to December.

Chebyshev-Laurent polynomials and weighted approximation

Let (a, b) subset of (0, infinity) and for any positive integer n, let S-n be the Chebyshev space in [a, b] defined by S-n:= span{x(-n/2+k),k= 0,...,n}. The unique (up to a constant factor) function tau(n) is an element of S-n, which satisfies the orthogonality relation S(a)(b)tau(n)(x)q(x) (x(b - x)(x - a))(-1/2) dx = 0 for any q is an element of Sn-1, is said to be the orthogonal Chebyshev S-n-polynomials. This paper is an attempt to exibit some interesting properties of the orthogonal Chebyshev S-n-polynomials and to demonstrate their importance to the problem of approximation by S-n-polynomials. A simple proof of a Jackson-type theorem is given and the Lagrange interpolation problem by functions from S-n is discussed. It is shown also that tau(n) obeys an extremal property in L-q, 1 less than or equal to q less than or equal to infinity. Natural analogues of some inequalities for algebraic polynomials, which we expect to hold for the S-n-pelynomials, are conjectured.

Ultrastructural aspects of acid phosphatase activity in Malpighian tubules of Triatoma infestans Klug

Acid phosphatase activity was investigated ultrastructurally in Malpighian tubules of Triatoma infestans. Enzyme activity was demonstrated in laminated 'concretions' (distal cells) and in typical lysosomes, as well as in basal plasmalemma infoldings and basement membranes (especially in distal cells). This activity was assumed to be related to the excretory functions carried out mostly by the distal cells. Heterochromatin-nucleolus functional relationships involving RNA transcription may promote the nuclear reaction verified in the proximal cells and in some distal cells. A lead phosphate precipitate appeared free in the cytoplasm encircling the nuclei and was assumed to be a contamination from the nuclear precipitates.

Stochastic scheduling - A flow shop no wait application and solutions

Minimizing the makespan of a flow-shop no-wait (FSNW) schedule where the processing times are randomly distributed is an important NP-Complete Combinatorial Optimization Problem. In spite of this, it can be found only in very few papers in the literature. By considering the Start Interval Concept, this problem can be formulated, in a practical way, in function of the probability of the success in preserve FSNW constraints for all tasks execution. With this formulation, for the particular case with 3 machines, this paper presents different heuristics solutions: by integrating local optimization steps with insertion procedures and by using genetic algorithms for search the solution space. A disposaable electrochemical sensor for the rapid determination of levodopa

Levodopa (L-dopa), the biological precursor of catecholamines, is the most widely prescribed drug in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The present work presents a proposal for the application of a gold screen-printed electrode an electrochemical sensor for monitoring L-dopa in stationary solution and a flow system. Using the electrooxidation of L-dopa at +0.63 V in acetate buffer pH 3.0 on a gold screen-printed electrode it is possible to obtain a linear calibration curve from 9.9 x 10(-5) to 1.2 x 10(-3) mol L-1 and a detection limit of 6.8 x 10(-5) mol L-1. Under amperometric conditions (E-app = 0.8 V; flow rate = 14.1 ml, min(-1); pH 3.0), an analytical calibration graph for L-dopa was obtained from 1.0 x 10(-6) mol L-1 6.6 x 10(-4) mol L-1 with a detection limit of 9.9 x 10(-7) mol L-1. Net energy, protein and macrominerals requirements for 70 to 120 day old female rabbits

In order to determine the net energy, protein and macrominerals requirements of 70 to 120 day old, 52 female White New Zealand rabbits, weighing 1900g +/- 40g were used. At the beginning of the experimental period, 14 of the 52 young does were slaughtered and the 38 remaining animals were kept under two dietary management: ad libitum and restricted feeding. Slaughters were performed to determine each nutrient body content. The weight gain nutrient requirements depicted by the quantities of each nutrient stored into the body were obtained by applying the regression equation, which estimate the empty body nutrient content logarithm as a function of the empty body weight logarithm, as described by ARC (1980). By determining the heat production logarithm at the zero level of metabolizable energy intake, the maintenance net energy requirement was estimated to be 45.31 Kcal/day/Kg(0.75) the mean net energy. protein, calcium, phosphorous, sodium, magnesium and potassium requirements for each gram of weight gain per day were estimated to be, 2.51 Kcal, 0.21g, 0.02g, 0.005g, 0.001g, 0.0004g and 0.002g, respectively.

Chromosome polymorphism and cytotype establishment in Bidens pilosa (Asteraceae)

Chromosome evolution, in the Bidens genus, was by polyploidy mechanisms. The basic number to the genus is X = 12 chromosomes, as all the Fitchinae subtribe. The association of chromosome number and environment in these plants was made some time ago, concerning the cytotypes of the species. In this paper, the chromosome number of nine Bidens pilosa populations was studied. The chromosome numbers found were 2n = 48, 70 and 72. In six of the nine populations analysed the most frequent number was 2n = 72. The Ibiuna population had 2n = 70 chromosomes and two had the lowest chromosome number (2n = 48). Observations of the B. pilosa population suggests that ploidy levels were related to a geographical gradient establishing the environmental altitudes. The data showed that lower ploidy levels, that is 2n = 48, were found at lower altitudes, while the populations higher ploidy levels were found in several environments, over a wide distribution.
