Cleft lip and palate (CLL) is a very common craniofacial anomaly. The cleft is usually corrected with surgery which may fail resulting in velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD). The use of palatal prosthesis is an alternative treatment for correcting both, CLP and VPD. This study evaluated anxiety symptoms expectations of subjects of both genders, with velopharyngeal dysfunction, referred to palatal prosthesis program for VPD treatment. In this cross sectional and descriptive study 30 subjects with velopharyngeal dysfunction, aged 15 to 64 years old (mean age of 28) were interviewed at the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies (HRAC). All subjects referred to the palatal prosthesis program at HRAC in the year of 2005 were considered for participation in the study but only the first 30 candidates were included. A questionnaire addressing expectation elaborated by the researcher and the Beck Scale on anxiety were used. All subjects showed expectation regarding speech modification. Changes in professional and affective aspects of their lives after changes in speech were obtained with palatal prosthesis were the most reported expectations. Subjects’ age and gender influenced anxiety levels significantly which were minimum across subjects. High levels of expectation were more frequent than anxiety in the sample population.

This study aimed to review articles about BDD published from 1980 to 2008, indexed in Lilacs, Francis, Scielo, Psychinfo and Ovid's databases. The main categories of analysis in the study were bibliography, method, results and their specifications. Among the results it is emphasized the considerable increase of publications from 1996 on and the low frequency of national publications on this topic. The articles consulted were mostly of characterization, their designs were more frequent as the non-experimental and experimental and used the verbal report as the main source of data collection. The results of the investigated studies focus mainly the typical behaviors and characteristics of the population diagnosed with BDD. This paper discusses the articles consulted, their contributions to the area and knowledge gaps.

The work and work organization influence the evolution of the health-disorder process by establishing a causal link with the work and the disorder. The present study aimed to verify the presence of the disorder of the sleepwake cycle triggered by non-organic factors, by identifying the possible effects on physical health, mental health and the social and family relations ten watchmen of a public institution of higher education. It was found that 80% of respondents had one or more of the symptoms that meet the criteria for the diagnosis of this non-organic disorder of sleep-wake cycle. We emphasize the need for specialized diagnostic, medical, psychological and social support for this population

This study aimed at investigating, in the national and international scientific literature, how aromatherapy is used as a therapeutic tool to reduce anxiety. It is a bibliographic study that adopted integrative literature review as a method. Studies published on databases Scielo, Medline and Cinahl from 2008 to 2012 were selected. A sample of 20 scientific articles was analyzed, and of these, 13 had an experimental and a quasi--experimental design whereas 07 were systematic or integrative reviews. The synthesis of knowledge sho-wed that aromatherapy represents a safe therapeutic practice although it is still underestimated in health care practices. The construction of evidence levels was not possible due to discrepancies in the studied populations, in research designs, the various essential oils used and the different methods for aromatherapy application. The knowledge gaps identified in these studies are related to the need to develop new forms to evaluate the effectiveness of this practice, including the therapist-patient relationship and the different communication forms that are intrinsic to aromatherapy.

Cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) is a progressive degenerative disorder of older dogs, characterized by a decline in cognitive function. The main clinical signs consistent with CDS are: disorientation, changes in socio-environmental interaction, sleep-wake cycle disturbance, changes in hygiene habits, urinate and/or defecate in unusual places, decreased physical activity, anxiety and eating disorders. There are no specific diagnostic tests for this condition in vivo, but alterations in neurological examination, cognitive tests and magnetic resonance imaging can be observed. The diagnosis is confirmed by histopathological examination of brain tissue. Diets rich in antioxidants, environmental enrichment with exercise and the use of selegiline and L-deprenyl have been recommended for the treatment of CDS.
