Different thermal treatments for the synthesis of BaTiO3 powder obtained through the Pechini method were studied. The synthesis of BaTiO3 starts at 150 °C by the thermal dehydration of organic precursors. The usual inevitable formation of barium carbonate during the thermal decomposition of the precursor could be retarded at lower calcination temperatures and optimized heating rates. The organic precursors were treated at temperatures between 200 and 400 °C. Then, the samples were calcined at 700 and 800 °C for 4 and 2 h, respectively. The resulting ceramic powders were characterized by gravimetric and differential thermal analyses, X-ray powder diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. It was found that depending on the heating rate and final temperature of the thermal treatment, high amounts of BaCO3 and TiO2 could be present due to the high concentration of organics in the final calcination step. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Autism spectrum disorders are severe psychiatric diseases commonly identified in the population. They are diagnosed during childhood and the etiology has been much debated due to their variations and complexity. Onset is early and characterized as communication and social interaction disorders and as repetitive and stereotyped behavior. Austistic disorders may occur together with various genetic and chromosomal diseases. Several chromosomal regions and genes are implicated in the predisposition for these diseases, in particular those with products expressed in the central nervous system. There are reports of autistic and mentally handicapped patients with submicroscopic subtelomeric alterations at the distal end of the long arm of chromosome 2. Additionally, there is evidence that alterations at 2q37 cause brain malformations that result in the autistic phenotype. These alterations are very small and not identified by routine cytogenetics to which patients are normally submitted, which may result in an underestimation of the diagnosis. This study aimed at evaluating the 2q37 region in patients with autistic disorders. Twenty patients were studied utilizing the fluorescence in situ hybridization technique with a specific probe for 2q37. All of them were also studied by the GTC banding technique to identify possible chromosomal diseases. No alterations were observed in the 2q37 region of the individuals studied, and no patient presented chromosomal diseases. This result may be due to the small sample size analyzed. The introduction of routine analysis of the 2q37 region for patients with autistic disorders depends on further studies. ©FUNPEC-RP.

The study of the kinetics of martensitic phase decomposition in the Cu-10wt.%Al alloy with Ag additions showed that the presence of Ag retarded the eutectoid decomposition reaction and enhanced martensite stabilization. This stabilization effect was attributed to Ag atoms redistribution as structure defects, increase in the numbers of Cu-Al pairs due to Ag-Al interaction and the Al atoms redistribution around one Cu atom at the sub-lattice of the martensitic crystal. © 2008 Trans Tech Publications.

The nonrelativistic problem of a particle immersed in a triangular potential well, set forth by N. A. Rao and B. A. Kagali, is revised. It is shown that these researchers misunderstood the full meaning of the potential and obtained a wrong quantization condition. By exploring the space inversion symmetry, this work presents the correct solution to this problem with potential applications in electronics in a simple and transparent way. © Electronic Journal of Theoretical Physics. This paper proposes a cluster partitioning technique to calculate improved upper bounds to the optimal solution of maximal covering location problems. Given a covering distance, a graph is built considering as vertices the potential facility locations, and with an edge connecting each pair of facilities that attend a same client. Coupling constraints, corresponding to some edges of this graph, are identified and relaxed in the Lagrangean way, resulting in disconnected subgraphs representing smaller subproblems that are computationally easier to solve by exact methods. The proposed technique is compared to the classical approach, using real data and instances from the available literature. © 2010 Edson Luiz França Senne et al.

This paper presents a new methodology for solving the optimal VAr planning problem in multi-area electric power systems, using the Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition. The original multi-area problem is decomposed into subproblems (one for each area) and a master problem (coordinator). The solution of the VAr planning problem in each area is based on the application of successive linear programming, and the coordination scheme is based on the reactive power marginal costs in the border bus. The aim of the model is to provide coordinated mechanisms to carry out the VAr planning studies maximizing autonomy and confidentiality for each area, assuring global economy to the whole system. Using the mathematical model and computational implementation of the proposed methodology, numerical results are presented for two interconnected systems, each of them composed of three equal subsystems formed by IEEE30 and IEEE118 test systems. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper a framework based on the decomposition of the first-order optimality conditions is described and applied to solve the Probabilistic Power Flow (PPF) problem in a coordinated but decentralized way in the context of multi-area power systems. The purpose of the decomposition framework is to solve the problem through a process of solving smaller subproblems, associated with each area of the power system, iteratively. This strategy allows the probabilistic analysis of the variables of interest, in a particular area, without explicit knowledge of network data of the other interconnected areas, being only necessary to exchange border information related to the tie-lines between areas. An efficient method for probabilistic analysis, considering uncertainty in n system loads, is applied. The proposal is to use a particular case of the point estimate method, known as Two-Point Estimate Method (TPM), rather than the traditional approach based on Monte Carlo simulation. The main feature of the TPM is that it only requires resolve 2n power flows for to obtain the behavior of any random variable. An iterative coordination algorithm between areas is also presented. This algorithm solves the Multi-Area PPF problem in a decentralized way, ensures the independent operation of each area and integrates the decomposition framework and the TPM appropriately. The IEEE RTS-96 system is used in order to show the operation and effectiveness of the proposed approach and the Monte Carlo simulations are used to validation of the results. © 2011 IEEE.

Considering the operation of shunt active compensators, such as active power filters, this paper proposes possible compensation strategies by means of the recent formulation of the Conservative Power Theory (CPT). The CPT current's decomposition results in several current components, which are associated with specific load characteristics (power transfer, energy storage, unbalances and/or non linearities). These current components are used for the definition of different compensation strategies, which can be selective in terms of minimizing particular disturbing effects. In order to validate the applicability of these new compensation strategies, simulation and experimental results for three-phase four-wire systems are presented. © 2011 IEEE.

We obtain an explicit cellular decomposition of the quaternionic spherical space forms, manifolds of positive constant curvature that are factors of an odd sphere by a free orthogonal action of a generalized quaternionic group. The cellular structure gives and explicit description of the associated cellular chain complex of modules over the integral group ring of the fundamental group. As an application we compute the Whitehead torsion of these spaces for any representation of the fundamental group. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Meglumine is an aminocarbohydrate able to form supramolecular adducts with organic acids. The recognition is based on hydrogen bonds and the structures resulting from the complexation have high solubility in water. This property has been exploited by the pharmaceutical industry in the improvement of existing drugs, and the successful example of this approach involves the poorly soluble non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Investigation of the thermal behavior of adduct obtained from meglumine and the NSAID diclofenac revealed that a polymer-like material is formed from the self-assembly of diclofenac-meglumine adducts in the melt. This polymer showed a high molecular weight around 2.0×105kDa. The kinetic parameters for the thermal decomposition step of the polymer were determined by the Capela-Ribeiro non-linear isoconversional method. From data for the TG curves in nitrogen atmosphere and heating rates of 5, 10, 15 and 20°Cmin-1, the Eα and Bα terms could be determined, and consequently the pre-exponential factor, Aα, as well as the kinetic model, g(α). © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Results are reported of a search for a deviation in the jet production cross section from the prediction of perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order. The search is conducted using a 7 TeV proton-proton data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb-1, collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider. A deviation could arise from interactions characterized by a mass scale Λ too high to be probed directly at the LHC. Such phenomena can be modeled as contact interactions. No evidence of a deviation is found. Using the CL s criterion, lower limits are set on Λ of 9.9 TeV and 14.3 TeV at 95% confidence level for models with destructive and constructive interference, respectively. Limits obtained with a Bayesian method are also reported. © 2013 CERN.

The water column overlying the submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) canopy presents difficulties when using remote sensing images for mapping such vegetation. Inherent and apparent water optical properties and its optically active components, which are commonly present in natural waters, in addition to the water column height over the canopy, and plant characteristics are some of the factors that affect the signal from SAV mainly due to its strong energy absorption in the near-infrared. By considering these interferences, a hypothesis was developed that the vegetation signal is better conserved and less absorbed by the water column in certain intervals of the visible region of the spectrum; as a consequence, it is possible to distinguish the SAV signal. To distinguish the signal from SAV, two types of classification approaches were selected. Both of these methods consider the hemispherical-conical reflectance factor (HCRF) spectrum shape, although one type was supervised and the other one was not. The first method adopts cluster analysis and uses the parameters of the band (absorption, asymmetry, height and width) obtained by continuum removal as the input of the classification. The spectral angle mapper (SAM) was adopted as the supervised classification approach. Both approaches tested different wavelength intervals in the visible and near-infrared spectra. It was demonstrated that the 585 to 685-nm interval, corresponding to the green, yellow and red wavelength bands, offered the best results in both classification approaches. However, SAM classification showed better results relative to cluster analysis and correctly separated all spectral curves with or without SAV. Based on this research, it can be concluded that it is possible to discriminate areas with and without SAV using remote sensing. © 2013 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

A study was undertaken about the structural and photoluminescent properties at room temperature of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) powders synthesized by a soft chemical method and heat treated between 300 and 800 °C. The decomposition of precursor powder was followed by thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD analyses revealed that the powders annealed at 800 °C are becoming ordered and crystallize in the cubic structure. The most intense PL emission was obtained for the sample calcined at 700 °C, which is not highly disordered (300-500 °C) and neither completely ordered (800 °C). From the spectrum it is clearly visible that the lowest wavelength peak is placed around 480 nm and the highest wavelength peak at about 590 nm. The UV/vis absorption spectroscopy measurements showed the presence of intermediate energy levels in the band gap of structurally disordered powders. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

The purpose of this study was to identify the boundary of submaximal speed zones (i.e., exercise intensity domains) between maximal aerobic speed (S-400) and lactate threshold (LT) in swimming. A 400-m all-out test, a 7 × 200 m incremental step test, and two to four 30-minute submaximal tests were performed by 12 male endurance swimmers (age = 24.5 ± 9.6 years; body mass = 71.3 ± 9.8 kg) to determine S-400, speed corresponding to LT, and maximal lactate steady state (MLSS). S-400 was 1.30 ± 0.09 m·s -1 (400 m-5:08 minutes:seconds). The speed at LT (1.08 ± 0.02 m·s-1; 83.1 ± 2.2 %S-400) was lower than the speed at MLSS (1.14 ± 0.02 m·s-1; 87.5 ± 1.9 %S-400). Maximal lactate steady state occurred at 26 ± 10% of the difference between the speed at LT and S-400. Mean blood lactate values at the speeds corresponding to LT and MLSS were 2.45 ± 1.13 mmol·L-1 and 4.30 ± 1.32 mmol·L-1, respectively. The present findings demonstrate that the range of intensity zones between LT and MLSS (i.e., heavy domain) and between MLSS and S-400 (i.e., severe domain) are very narrow in swimming with LT occurring at 83% S-400 in trained swimmers. Precision and sensitivity of the measurement of aerobic indexes (i.e., LT and MLSS) should be considered when conducting exercise training and testing in swimming. © 2013 National Strength and Conditioning Association.

We studied the vegetation of two crystalline rock outcrops in the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil. We recorded typically rupicolous species, which are rare or classified as extremely endangered, such as Aechmea guainumbiorum, found exclusively in one of the study sites. In both areas there was a predominance of therophytes over other life-forms, in contrast to observations made in rock outcrops of the southern Atlantic Forest. Therophytes also stood out in other rock outcrops at similar latitudes as our study site, regardless of the surrounding vegetation. Plants of other life-forms had significantly lower richness and showed adaptations to drought, such as succulent stem, pseudobulbs, dense pilosity, and underground storage organs. Our results suggest that invasive species may modify the vegetation of crystalline rock outcrops, as they change the number of species of all life-forms in comparison between sites. Hence, our results present the biological identity of these rupicolous habitats, which are marginal to forests, and point to the need for conserving them, in order to protect the Atlantic Forest's biodiversity. © 2013 Botanical Society of Sao Paulo.
