Objective. The general aim of this article is to describe the state-of-the-art of biocompatibility testing for dental materials, and present new strategies for improving operative dentistry techniques and the biocompatibility of dental materials as they relate to their interaction with the dentin-pulp complex.Methods. The literature was reviewed focusing on articles related to biocompatibilty testing, the dentin-pulp complex and new strategies and materials for operative dentistry. For this purpose, the PubMed database as well as 118 articles published in English from 1939 to 2014 were searched. Data concerning types of biological tests and standardization of in vitro and in vivo protocols employed to evaluate the cytotoxicity and biocompatibility of dental materials were also searched from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), International Standards Organization (ISO) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI).Results. While there is an ongoing search for feasible strategies in the molecular approach to direct the repair or regeneration of structures that form the oral tissues, it is necessary for professionals to master the clinical therapies available at present. In turn, these techniques must be applied based on knowledge of the morphological and physiological characteristics of the tissues involved, as well as the physical, mechanical and biologic properties of the biomaterials recommended for each specific situation. Thus, particularly within modern esthetic restorative dentistry, the use of minimally invasive operative techniques associated with the use of dental materials with excellent properties and scientifically proved by means of clinical and laboratory studies must be a routine for dentists. This professional and responsible attitude will certainly result in greater possibility of achieving clinical success, benefiting patients and dentists themselves.Signcance. This article provides a general and critical view of the relations that permeate the interaction between dental materials and the dentin-pulp complex, and establish real possibilities and strategies that favor biocompatibility of the present and new products used in Dentistry, which will certainly benefit clinicians and their patients. A criptosporidiose, é a enfermidade de veiculação hídrica, possui como agravante a dificuldade de prevenção da contaminação ambiental e ausência de medidas terapêuticas eficazes. Com acentuada importância na bovinocultura, ocasiona inflamação e atrofia das vilosidades intestinais resultando em perda da superfície de absorção. Este estudo teve como objetivo realizar a caracterização molecular da infecção por Cryptosporidium spp. em bezerros do Município de Formiga, Minas Gerais. Um total de 300 amostras de fezes de bezerros holandeses, Nelore e sem raça definida saudáveis foram avaliadas pela técnica de coloração contraste negativo de verde malaquita e por meio da reação de Nested-PCR para amplificação de fragmentos de DNA da subunidade 18S do gene do RNA ribossômico. Ocorrência de 5,33% (16/300) pelo verde malaquita e 4,66% (14/300), pela PCR foi observada, sendo que nenhuma correlação foi verificada entre a positividade e as variáveis estudadas. Por meio da caracterização molecular foram identificadas as espécies Cryptosporidium andersoni e Cryptosporidium ryanae. Como conclusão, observou-se baixa ocorrência da infecção e eliminação de oocistos por Cryptosporidium spp, ausência de sinais clínicos nos animais, houve forte concordância entre os resultados obtidos por meio das duas técnicas utilizadas e pela caracterização molecular (Nested-PCR) foram diagnosticadas as espécies C. andersoni e C. ryanae, presentes em faixas etárias não relatadas na literatura. Estas duas espécies de Cryptosporidium supracitadas são descritas pela primeira vez, parasitando bovinos no estado de Minas Gerais.

The human poliomavirus is the etiologic agente of Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a disease characterized by focal lesions not expansives of the central nervous system that develops in imunocompromissed patients, specially people with aids. The main aim of the study was to evalute the prevalence of the JCV excretion in urine samples of patients with aids, without PML, to compare two JCV DNA detection techniques through of two diferents genomic regions and to evaluate the genotypic characterization of the positive samples. A total of 75 samples were colected in the Instituto de Infectologia Emílio Ribas, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, between may and november, 2009. To detect the JC virus it was made the DNA extraction and then the polimerase chain reaction (PCR). Firstly a fragment of 215 bp was amplified, which corresponds to the codifying gene of the strutural protein of de JC vírus capsid VP1. All the samples were later submitted to another PCR that uses a pair of primers complementaries to the early region of the JCV (T antigen) amplifying a fragment of 173 bp. Followed by the digestion of the amplified product with the restriction enzime BamH1, resulting in two smaller fragments (120 bp and 53 bp). The JC vírus was detected in 53 samples, for both techniques (70,7% for VP1 PCR, and the restriction enzime BamH1), 34/46 were men (73,9%) and 19/29 were women (65,5%). The JCV excretion was higher in individuals that were over 46 years old. Regarding the seven genotypes described in the literature, the ones that were more prevalent among the JC positive patients were 3B and 3A with 10 samples each (21,0%), the 2B with 9 samples (19,0%) and genotype 6, with six samples (13,0%). As in the brown patients as the white ones, the most prevalent genotype was 3B. In the present study it was observed a high prevalence of JCV DNA (70,7%) and the genotype 3 (43,0%)...
