This study aimed to determine the optimal intake of lysine and threonine for broiler breeder hens. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses of birds to digestible lysine (Lys) and threonine (Thr). Eight treatments were assessed in both experiments, with six replicates of eight birds in the Lys experiment and ten birds in the Thr experiment. The dietary levels of Lys and Thr were obtained by a dilution technique. The experimental period was ten weeks for each amino acid studied, which included six weeks of adaptation and four weeks of data collection. The amino acid intake, egg mass and body weight were adjusted using a Reading model. Based on the model coefficients, the cost of the synthetic amino acids sources and the price of fertile eggs determined the intake of each amino acid to maximize. The minimum intake of Lys and Thr reduced egg production by 40 and 30%, respectively, the weight of the eggs decreased by 12 and 9% with the same intake of Lys and Thr, respectively. The models generated by predicting Lys and Thr intake were as follows: Lys=11 x E+31 x W and Thr=9.5 x E+32 x W, where E=egg mass, g/bird per day, and W=body weight, kg/bird. Based on the models, 3 kg birds with an egg mass production of 50 g/day require 643 mg/bird per day of Lys and 569 mg/bird per day of Thr. The optimum economic intake was calculated at 954 and 834 mg/bird per day for Lys and Thr, respectively, reflecting a dietary concentration of 0.636% Lys and 0.556% Thr for a feed intake of 150 g/bird per day. ObjectiveFindings on weight training and waist circumference (WC) change are controversial. This study examined prospectively whether weight training, moderate to vigorous aerobic activity (MVAA), and replacement of one activity for another were associated with favorable changes in WC and body weight (BW).MethodsPhysical activity, WC, and BW were reported in 1996 and 2008 in a cohort of 10,500 healthy U.S. men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Multiple linear regression models (partition/substitution) to assess these associations were used.ResultsAfter adjusting for potential confounders, a significant inverse dose-response relationship between weight training and WC change (P-trend<0.001) was observed. Less age-associated WC increase was seen with a 20-min/day activity increase; this benefit was significantly stronger for weight training (-0.67 cm, 95% CI -0.93, -0.41) than for MVAA (-0.33 cm, 95% CI -0.40, -0.27), other activities (-0.16 cm, 95% CI -0.28, -0.03), or TV watching (0.08 cm, 95% CI 0.05, 0.12). Substituting 20 min/day of weight training for any other discretionary activity had the strongest inverse association with WC change. MVAA had the strongest inverse association with BW change (-0.23 kg, 95% CI -0.29, -0.17).ConclusionsAmong various activities, weight training had the strongest association with less WC increase. Studies on frequency/volume of weight training and WC change are warranted.

1. 1. The oxygen consumption in workers of two simpatric leaf cutting ants, Atta laevigata and Atta sexdens rubropilosa was measured at different temperatures. 2. 2. In the temperature range between 5-35°C, with 5°C increments, the respiratory rates increased with temperature, but the R-T curves of both ants showed neither a marked drop at the low end nor a break at the high end; except between 30 and 35°C. 3. 3. The respiratory rates of A. s. rubropilosa were higher than those of A. laevigata and in the midrange of temperatures, the rates of A. laevigata increased faster than those of A. s. rubropilosa. 4. 4. Q10 values did not indicate regions of compensation for temperature in both ants, but suggested that adjustments may occur at high temperatures (25-35°C), as expected for tropical ants. 5. 5. Temperature variations did not alter significantly the slope of the curve relating oxygen consumption and body weight in both species. © 1982.

Objective The purpose of the present study was to analyze the effects of a 20-week concurrent training (20 WCT) intervention program on gender-specific body composition and metabolic variables in obese adolescents.Subjects and methods Sample was composed of twenty-five obese adolescents, aged between 12 and 15 (13.4 ± 0.96) years. Fat-free mass (FFM), percentage trunk fat mass (TFM%) and percentage fat mass (%FM) were evaluated through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Measurement of intra-abdominal adiposity (IAAT) was performed using ultrasound. Blood pressure was measured and blood samples analyzed for total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), triglycerides (TG) and plasma glucose. All participants performed the concurrent training (combination of weight training and aerobic training) three times per week, one hour per day, for 20 weeks. Descriptive analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures were used to compare baseline, 10 week and 20 week moments using the Bonferroni post-hoc test. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Significant decrease in TC, LDL-c and TFM% were verified in both genders after the 10 initial weeks of concurrent training. Results A significant increase in height was found in both the male and female groups (p = 0.001 and p = 0.047, respectively), after 20 weeks of concurrent training. In addition, several modifications were observed in body composition and metabolic variables, with a significant decrease in BMI (p = 0.002 and p = 0.017), BMI z-score (p = 0.033 and p = 0.004), FM% (p = 0.002 and p = 0.002), TFM% (p = 0.009 and p = 0.018), TC (p = 0.042 and p = 0.001) and LDL-c (p = 0.006 and p = 0.001) in the male and female groups, respectively, after 20 weeks of intervention when compared with baseline. Conclusion Our results identified that concurrent training was an effective intervention for treating metabolic variable and body composition disorders, in both genders, by decreasing adiposity with consequent improvement in BMI and BMI z-scores, and enhancement in lipid profile variables.

In female rats, a single injection of estradiol valerate (EV) results in effects that are similar to those observed in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We hypothesized that EV-induced PCOS affects breathing control based on evidence showing an influence of sex hormones on ventilation. To test this hypothesis, we studied the effects of EV treatment on the ventilation of female rats in air, in 7% CO2 and in 7% O2, at 30, 45 and 60 days after EV injection. The group examined 30 days after EV treatment showed a 61% reduction in the hypercapnic ventilatory response compared to the control group. Basal ventilation, hypoxic ventilatory response, and body temperature were not affected. These results, suggest that the hormonal changes observed in PCOS may result in a temporary inhibition of the central chemoreflex but do not influence basal ventilation or the hypoxic peripheral chemoreflex.

1. 1. Oxygen consumption and its relationship to declining oxygen tension was examined in the tropical spirotreptid millipede, Plusioporus setiger. 2. 2. At 25°C and normoxia, the allometric equations relating the weight-specific oxygen consumption rates and body weight were V ̇O2 = 2.1266 × W-53 for males, and V ̇O2 = 2.0915 × W-64 for females, but no significant difference was detected from the b-values. 3. 3. Plusioporus setiger regulated respiration down to 35.40 mmHg O2 when suddenly exposed to a lowered oxygen tension, or 17.70 mmHg O2, when examined in a stepwise declining oxygen tension. 4. 4. O2 dependence indices ( K1 K2) were relatively low, also expressing regulation, but no relation to size (weight) was recorded. 5. 5. After exposure to hypoxia, P. setiger showed a typical pattern of under repayment, on the return to normoxia. © 1987.

The objective of this research was to verify the relationship between biological markers of performance of elite judo athletes and performance in different physical fitness tests. Twenty-one judo athletes were involved in the present observational and correlational study. Dermatoglyphic variables and the 2D:4D digit ratio were considered as biological markers, while the physical fitness variables analyzed were body fat, maximal strength, muscular power, the aerobic and anaerobic profile, and performance in specific tests. The statistics involved canonical correlations and a multivariate technique. A high and significant canonical correlation was observed between groups of variables, the first expressed by 1=0.999 (p<0.0001) and the second by 2=0.997 (p<0.001). It appears that, beyond height and body mass, total ridge count, pattern intensity for fingers and 2D:4D had more canonical loading. The physical fitness component of the first canonical variable incorporated, with high intensity were: the sum of skinfold thickness, the bench press onerepetition maximum (1RM), upper and lower body aerobic power. In the second canonical variable, physical fitness was composed of the squat 1RM, suspension time on the bar, the SJFT-index, and mean power during the upper body Wingate test. The data of this investigation showed the interdependence between biological markers of performance and physical fitness in high level judo athletes.

Objective: Investigate the association of diet on Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG) and response of a lifestyle changing protocol (LISC) on a community sample of adults. Methods: A cross sectional study of LISC was conducted with 1004 subjects. From those, 264 adults individuals participated in a 20-week intervention based on physical exercises and dietary counseling and were divided in three groups, normoglycemic, IFG, and T2DM. Evaluations were done at baseline (M0) and after a 20-week intervention (M1). The analyses were performed by using SAS, version 9.2., and results were discussed based on the level of significance of p<0.05. Results: At baseline, the three groups differed for plasma triglycerides, and number of altered metabolic syndrome (MetS) components. T2DM differed from normoglicemic by presenting higher intake of meat, lower of sugar, and less dietary variety, along with higher plasma levels of uric acid. After 20-week intervention, normoglicemics, IFG and T2DM responded similarly to LISC. Both genders increased body fatness. Men increased fasting plasma insulin, saturated fatty acid intake, along with a decrease of vegetable oil intake while women showed a significant increase in HEI and dietary fiber intake and a trend to higher sugar and protein intake and lower vegetable oil intake. Overall T2DM decreased 68% from M0 (9.5%) to M1 (6.4%) of LISC. Conclusion: Our data showed a significant difference in food composition on altered plasma glucose, and its further normalization with lifestyle intervention was independent of significant body weight and body fat changes.
