Study the semi-quantitative and quantitative technique in the diagnosis of catheter-related infections in newborns and to determine oxacillin resistance in Staphylococcus isolated. It was analyzed 353 catheter tips from 273 newborns in the Neonatal Unit of Hospital FMB. To confirm the diagnosis of infection, were analyzed the clinical data of newborns, the presence of at least one positive blood culture and growth of ≥ 1000 CFU/mL on quantitative culture and/or ³15 UFC on semiquantitative culture, with the same microorganism isolation (species and drug sensitivity) in blood culture and no other focus of infection except the catheter. The disk diffusion technique was used to check similarity of strains and resistance to oxacillin. Of the 353 tips analyzed, 39 were included in this study as the inclusion criteria. The semiquantitative culture was positive in 26 (66.7%) catheters and quantitative culture was positive in 24 (61.5%). Of 273 patients, 19 (6.9%) had a diagnosis of catheter-related bloodstream Infection (CR-BSI). Of the 19 episodes of CR-BSI, S. epidermidis was the predominant etiological agent (84.2%). The resistance to the antibiotic methicillin was found in 14 (73.7%) strains of Staphylococcus. The semiquantitative method was more sensitive (79%) compared with the quantitative method (63%). The use of antibiotics may have influenced the sensitivity of the quantitative method as the microorganisms present in the lumen are exposed to higher concentrations of antibiotics administered via the catheter

Systhemic lupus erythematous is a imunomediated disorder witch affects primarly dogs between two and nine years. Clinical manifestations are very diverse, including renal signs, that may lead to chronic renal disease, and dermatologic and joint sings. Systhemic lupus erythematous diagnostic is a challange to the clinician, due to its diverse list of differecial diagnoses and its low availability of specific tests. The treatment consists of corticosteroids and imunomodulators, and supportive therapy that inhibits the progression of the disease. Seed dispersal is a key process in the life cycle of plant species and may determine the dynamics of their populations. The passage of the fruit from the gastrointestinal tract brings effects on energy and nutritional rewards for the bird. The retention time of the seeds is an essential factor for the dispersion, affecting the dispersal distance. Some factors determine it, as the size of the bird, degree of frugivory, chemical composition of the fruit, the number and size of seeds. The study sought to characterize the Morus nigra seed retention time in three species of thrushes and compare them with other species of birds and plants. The blackberry, exotic species with socio-economic importance in Brazil, produces aggregate fruit having up to 60 seeds. Have been kept in captivity individuals leucomelas Turdus rufiventris thrush, thrush and amaurochalinus, native and omnivorous species, important dispersers in degraded areas, inhabiting the urban and the natural environment. In 274 samples of feces was recorded about 500 mulberry seeds. The first record of seeds was in 15 minutes (n = 2) and the last to 115 minutes (n = 4) after eating the fruit. The average time of gastrointestinal transit of seed for the three species was 52 minutes and 80% were defecated to 65 minutes post ingestion. Taking into consideration the type of fruit and the species of bird, there is great variation in the retention time when compared to other species of birds, being in general slower. That way, can be increase the degree of dispersion of the seed to more distant areas of the mother plant, increasing the chances of survival of seedlings, according to the hypothesis Janzen and Connell. The Turdus It showed efficient dispersers Morus nigra seeds, and inhabits natural and urbanized environment, the possibility of exchange of these seeds between environments by the action of thrushes

Co-infections by Leishmania (L.) chagasi, Trypanosoma evansi, Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in dogs were investigated. Amastigotes forms of Leishmania spp. were detected by cytopathological analysis of lymph nodes in 46,42% (39/84) of dogs. In a male dog, adult, without defined breed, from rural area and positive for Leishmania, were observed flagellated forms of T. evansi in blood smear. By immunofluorescence antibody test, 5,95% (5/84) of dogs were considered reactive to T. gondii, with titer equal to or higher than 1:64, while 3,57% (3/84) were reactive to N. caninum, with titer ≥1:50. Among the animals with visceral leishmaniasis, one showed positive serological response to T. gondii and two for N. caninum. All dogs reactive to N. caninum were from rural area and the predominance of infection by T. gondii was in dogs from urban area. A young male dog from the rural area and seropositive for T. gondii showed Ehrlichia spp. morulae in the cytology and positive reaction for canine distemper virus. Thus, further studies are needed to assess the epidemiology of these infections in canine population, especially with respect to the reservoirs of Trypanosoma spp. in rural areas.

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that affects the dental pulp due to some local changes. Before this information, a research through literature was made with the purpose to study the interrelation between pulp infections and diabetes. We analyzed several articles that described researches involving animals and they showed that there is a relation between diabetes and size, progression and severity of the periradicular lesions. There is evidence that diabetes is an important factor over the oral tissue, causing alterations in the inflammatory mediators and changing the structure of the pulp. Although many studies prove that there is an interrelation between diabetes and pulp infections, there are still some gaps in the current literature that need to be filled.

The diagnosis of head and neck infections constitutes relevant step in their treatment. However, in spite of the fact that most of diseases in head and neck region are infectious in nature, several reasons collaborated for dentists do not ask laboratory tests in order to help clinical diagnosis. By mean of this review literature, based on research articles about the newest and most reliable methods of diagnosis for clinical laboratories, the authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each selected method and the relevant aspects in transportation of the specimens to the laboratory. Saliva, biofilm, pus, and blood are the most frequent specimens for microbial diagnosis, being that the most used methods are culture and those based on detection of deoxyribonucleic acid by polymerase chain reaction method. Whereas, the culture depends on cellular viability, and has reduced sensitivity, as well as needs favorable conditions in the sample collection and transportation, PCR shows high sensitivity and specificity, but it does not allow the determination of antibiogram, what reduces its usefulness. In addition, few laboratories possess conditions to perform cultivation of obligate anaerobes or have experience in the molecular detection of these microorganisms.

Os anaeróbios obrigatórios que compõem o complexo vermelho de Socransky são reconhecidos pelo seu envolvimento nas doenças periodontais humanas, mas em pacientes imunocomprometidos os mesmos parecem estar associados a quadros sépticos mais graves e de tratamento mais complexo. Esse estudo objetivou avaliar a ocorrência de Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Tannerella forsythia (Tf) e Treponema denticola (Td) no biofilme, mucosas e saliva de 160 pacientes HIV+, 5 pacientes leucêmicos, 50 pacientes submetidos à radioterapia para tratamento de câncer de cabeça e pescoço e sua correlação com sintomatologia clínica. Amostras de biofilme sub e supragengival, saliva e mucosas foram coletadas após a realização do exame clínico intrabucal. Após a extração do DNA, a detecção desses microrganismos era realizada por PCR. Esses patógenos foram detectados de todos os espécimes clínicos de pacientes com necrose de tecidos moles bucais. Nos pacientes HIV+, a frequência de detecção de Pg e Tf entre pacientes com periodontite foi 2,8 e 2,1 vezes mais elevada do que a observada nos indivíduos periodontalmente saudáveis. T. denticola foi detectado apenas nos sítios com necrose, supuração e perda óssea pronunciada. Pg e Tf se mostraram associados com perda óssea e sangramento gengival. A presença desses microrganismos esteve associada a odor fétido e dor, o que pode auxiliar o clínico na escolha de antimicrobianos como auxiliares do tratamento, devendo-se evitar o emprego de β-lactâmicos, podendo-se associar essas drogas ao metronidazol.

Acute infections maxillo-facial are of great importance, both for its high population, as the risk of complications. The aim of this study was to present a clinical case of extensive odontogenic abscess in a patient of 31 years of age attended the Service of Surgery and Maxillo-Facial, Faculty of Dentistry of Araçatuba - UNESP in Araçatuba, SP. Complications of infections odontogências although infrequent can lead the patient to death.
