Diverse amorphous hydrogenated carbon and similar films containing additional elements were produced by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) and by Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation and Deposition (PIIID). Thus a-C:H, a-C:H:F, a-C:H:N, a-C:H:Cl and a-C:H:O:Si were obtained, starting from the same feed gases, using both techniques. The same deposition system supplied with radiofrequency (RF) power was used to produce all the films. A cylindrical stainless steel chamber equipped with circular electrodes mounted horizontally was employed. RF power was fed to the upper electrode; substrates were placed on the lower electrode. For PIIID negative high tension pulses were also applied to the lower electrode. Raman spectroscopy confirmed that all the films are amorphous. Chemical characterization of each pair of films was undertaken using Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The former revealed the presence of specific structures, such as C-H, C-O, O-H. The latter allowed calculation of the ratio of hetero-atoms to carbon atoms in the films, e. g. F:C, N:C, and Si:C. Only relatively small differences in elemental composition were detected between films produced by the two methods. The deposition rate in PIIID is generally reduced in relation to that of PECVD; for a-C:H:Cl films the reduction factor is almost four.

Thin polymer films were deposited from acetylene and argon mixtures by plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition. The effect of the pulse frequency, v, on molecular structure, optical gap, contact angle and hardness of the films was investigated. It was observed progressive dehydrogenation of the samples and increment in the concentration of unsaturated carbon bonds as the pulse frequency was increased. Film hardness and contact angle increased and optical gap decreased with v. These results are interpreted in terms of the chain unsaturation and crosslinking.

This study was conducted to observe the rat subcutaneous connective tissue reaction to implanted dentin tubes that were filled with mineral trioxide aggregate, Sealapex, Calciobiotic Root Canal Sealer (CRCS), Sealer 26, and the experimental material, Sealer Plus. The animals were sacrificed after 7 and 30 days, and the specimens were prepared for histological analysis after serial sections with a hard-tissue microtome. The undecalcified sections were examined with polarized light after staining according to the Von Kossa technique for calcium. At the tube openings, there were Von Kossa-positive granules that were birefringent to polarized light. Next to these granulations, there was irregular tissue, like a bridge, that was Von Kossa-positive. The dentin walls of the tubes exhibited a structure highly birefringent to polarized light, usually like a layer, in the tubules. These results were observed with all the studied materials, except the CRCS, which didn't exhibit any kind of mineralized structure. The results suggest that among the materials studied, the CRCS could have the least possibility of encouraging hard tissue deposition.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of delaying ovulation subsequent to superstimulation of follicular growth in beef cows (Bos indicus) on embryo recovery rates and the capacity of embryos to establish pregnancies. Ovulation was delayed by three treatments using either progesterone (CIDR-B®) or a GnRH agonist (deslorelin). Multiparous Nelore cows (n = 24) received three of four superstimulation treatments in an incomplete block design (n = 18 per group). Cows in Groups CTRL, P48 and P60 were treated with a CIDR-B device plus estradiol benzoate (EB, 4 mg, i.m.) on Day-5, while cows in Group D60 were implanted with deslorelin on Day-7. Cows were superstimulated with FSH (Folltropin-V® 200 mg), from Day 0 to 3, using twice daily injections in decreasing amounts. All cows were treated with a luteolytic dose of prostaglandin on Day 2 (08:00 h). CIDR-B devices were removed as follows: Group CTRL, Day 2 (20:00 h); Group P48, Day 4 (08:00 h); Group P60, Day 4 (20:00 h). Cows in Group CTRL were inseminated at 10, 20 and 30 h after first detected estrus. Ovulation was induced for cows in Group P48 (Day 4, 08:00 h) and Groups P60 and D60 (Day 4, 20:00 h) by injection of LH (Lutropin®, 25 mg, i.m.), and these cows were inseminated 10 and 20 h after treatment with LH. Embryos were recovered on Days 11 or 12, graded and transferred to synchronized recipients. Pregnancies were determined by ultrasonography around Day 100. Data were analyzed by mixed procedure, Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-square tests. The number of ova/embryos, transferable embryos (mean ± S.E.M.) and pregnancy rates (%) were as follows, respectively: Group CTRL (10.8 ± 1.8, 6.1 ± 1.3, 51.5), P48 (12.6 ± 1.9, 7.1 ± 1.0, 52.3), P60 (10.5 ± 1.6, 5.7 ± 1.3, 40.0) and D60 (10.3 ± 1.7, 5.0 ± 1.2, 50.0). There were no significant differences among the groups (P > 0.05). It was concluded that fixed time AI in association with induced ovulation did not influence embryo recovery. Furthermore, pregnancy rates in embryos recovered from cows with delayed ovulation were similar to those in embryos obtained from cows treated with a conventional superstimulation protocol. © 2002 Elsevier B.V. Nitrogen ions were implanted by plasma immersion in Kapton, Mylar and polypropylene, with the objective of forming a diamond-like carbon layer on these polymers. The Raman spectrum of the implanted polypropylene showed typical Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) graphite (G) and disorder (D) peaks, with an sp 3/sp2 hybridization ratio of approximately 0.4 to 0.6. The XPS analysis of the three implanted polymers also showed peaks of C-C and N-C bonds in the sp3 configuration, with hybridization ratios in the same range as the Raman result. The implanted polymers were exposed to oxygen plasma to test the resistance of the polymers to oxygen degradation. Mass loss rate results, however, showed that the DLC layer formed is not sufficiently robust for this application. Nevertheless, the layer formed can be suitable for other applications such as in gas barriers in beverage containers. Further study of implantation conditions may improve the quality of the DLC layer.

The biggest advantage of plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) is the capability of treating objects with irregular geometry without complex manipulation of the target holder. The effectiveness of this approach relies on the uniformity of the incident ion dose. Unfortunately, perfect dose uniformity is usually difficult to achieve when treating samples of complex shape. The problems arise from the non-uniform plasma density and expansion of plasma sheath. A particle-in-cell computer simulation is used to study the time-dependent evolution of the plasma sheath surrounding two-dimensional objects during process of plasma immersion ion implantation. Before starting the implantation phase, steady-state nitrogen plasma is established inside the simulation volume by using ionization of gas precursor with primary electrons. The plasma self-consistently evolves to a non-uniform density distribution, which is used as initial density distribution for the implantation phase. As a result, we can obtain a more realistic description of the plasma sheath expansion and dynamics. Ion current density on the target, average impact energy, and trajectories of the implanted ions were calculated for three geometrical shapes. Large deviations from the uniform dose distribution have been observed for targets with irregular shapes. In addition, effect of secondary electron emission has been included in our simulation and no qualitative modifications to the sheath dynamics have been noticed. However, the energetic secondary electrons change drastically the plasma net balance and also pose significant X-ray hazard. Finally, an axial magnetic field has been added to the calculations and the possibility for magnetic insulation of secondary electrons has been proven.

Ferromagnetic clusters were incorporated into GaAs samples by Mn implantation and subsequent annealing. The composition and structural properties of the Mn-based nanoclusters formed at the surface and buried into the GaAs sample were analyzed by x-ray and microscopic techniques. Our measurements indicate the presence of buried MnAs nanoclusters with a structural phase transition around 40 °C, in accord with the first-order magneto-structural phase transition of bulk MnAs. We discuss the structural behavior of these nanoclusters during their formation and phase transition, which is an important point for technological applications. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Ti-6Al-4V samples have been treated by PHI processing at different temperatures (400-800°C), treatment time (30-150 min) and plasma potential (100 and 420 V). Hardness measurements results showed an enhancement of the hardness for all implanted samples. XRD results detected the Ti 2N phase and the best corrosion resistance was found for the samples processed at higher temperature and lower PIII time.

The objective was to analyze and report field data focusing on the effect of type of progesterone-releasing vaginal insert and dose of pLH on embryo production, following a superstimulatory protocol involving fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) in Nelore cattle (Bos taurus indicus). Donor heifers and cows (n = 68; 136 superstimulations over 2 years) received an intravaginal, progesterone-releasing insert (CIDR® or DIB®, with 1.9 or 1.0 g progesterone, respectively) and 3-4 mg of estradiol benzoate (EB) i.m. at random stages of the estrous cycle. Five days later (designated Day 0), cattle were superstimulated with a total of 120-200 mg of pFSH (Folltropin-V®), given twice daily in decreasing doses from Days 0 to 3. All cattle received two luteolytic doses of PGF2α at 08:00 and 20:00 h on Day 2 and progesterone inserts were removed at 20:00 h on Day 3 (36 h after the first PGF2α injection). Ovulation was induced with pLH (Lutropin-V®, 12.5 or 25 mg, i.m.) at 08:00 h on Day 4 with FTAI 12, 24 and in several cases, 36 h later. Embryos were recovered on Days 11 or 12, graded and transferred to synchronous recipients. Overall, the mean (±S.E.M.) number of total ova/embryos (13.3 ± 0.8) and viable embryos (9.4 ± 0.6) and pregnancy rate (43.5%; 528/1213) did not differ among groups, but embryo viability rate (overall, 70.8%) was higher in donors with a DIB (72.3%) than a CIDR (68.3%, P = 0.007). In conclusion, the administration of pLH 12 h after progesterone removal in a progestin-based superstimulatory protocol facilitated fixed-time AI in Nelore donors, with embryo production, embryo viability and pregnancy rates after embryo transfer, comparable to published results where estrus detection and AI was done. Results suggested a possible alternative, which would eliminate the need for estrus detection in donors. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This research evaluated the bone repair process after implantation of homogenous demineralized dentin matrix (HDDM) in surgical defects in the parietal bone of rabbits with alloxan-induced diabetes, using a polytetrafluorethylene (PTFe) barrier for guided bone regeneration. Thirty-six rabbits were used and divided into four groups: control (C, n = 12), diabetic (D, n = 12, left parietal bone), diabetic with PTFe (DPTFe, same 12 rabbits, right parietal bone), and diabetic with PTFe associated to HDDM (D-PTFe+HDDM, n = 12). Bone defects were created in the parietal bone of the rabbits and the experimental treatments were performed, where applicable. The rabbits were sacrificed after 15, 30, 60 and 90 days. The bone defects were examined radiographically and by optical density (ANOVA and Tukey test, p < .05). The radiographic findings showed that the D-PTFe+HDDM group presented greater radiopacity and better trabecular bone arrangement when compared to that of the C, D and D-PTFe groups. The statistical analysis showed significant differences in the optical density of the newly formed bone among the studied groups. It was possible to conclude that HDDM was biocompatible in diabetic rabbits.

Objective: This prospective randomized trial evaluated if there is an improvement in clinical outcomes when assisted hatching is performed in embryos derived from vitrified oocytes in an ovum donation program. Methods: Sixty oocyte recipients undergoing donation program using egg-cryobanking were randomly allocated to the assisted hatched (AH, n=30) or control group (n=30). Pregnancy and implantation rates were compared between the groups. Vitrification and warming procedure were carried out according to the Cryotopmethod. Immediately before embryo transfer, embryos undergoing laser-assisted hatching had the zona pellucida thinned using a 1.48 μm wavelength diode laser. Results: A total of 288 vitrified MII oocytes were warmed for the 60 recipients (4.8 oocytes per recipient). Out of 288 vitrified oocytes, 273 (94.8%) survived. All surviving oocytes were sperm injected and 228 displayed 2 pronucleus 16-18h after injection (83.5%). There were 172 good quality embryos transferred. Twenty four patients achieved clinical pregnancy (total pregnancy rate of 40%). The clinical pregnancy rate did not differ between AH and control groups (44.4% and 33.3%, respectively, p=0.1967), however AH resulted in a significant higher implantation rate (31.6% and 18.4%, p=0.0206). These findings were confirmed by the regression models either for pregnancy (OR = 1.14; IC 95% = 0.80-.72; p= 0.766), as for the implantation rate (RC:19.45, P=0.041). Conclusions: Our evidences demonstrated the effectiveness of the AH in embryos derived from warmed oocytes and suggest that oocyte cryopreservation is a valuable tool to provide successful outcomes in an egg donor program. © Todos os direitos reservados a SBRA - Sociedade Brasileira de Reprodução Assistida.

The objective of this experiment was to test in vitro embryo production (IVP) as a tool to estimate fertility performance in zebu bulls using Bayesian inference statistics. Oocytes were matured and fertilized in vitro using sperm cells from three different Zebu bulls (V, T, and G). The three bulls presented similar results with regard to pronuclear formation and blastocyst formation rates. However, the cleavage rates were different between bulls. The estimated conception rates based on combined data of cleavage and blastocyst formation were very similar to the true conception rates observed for the same bulls after a fixed-time artificial insemination program. Moreover, even when we used cleavage rate data only or blastocyst formation data only, the estimated conception rates were still close to the true conception rates. We conclude that Bayesian inference is an effective statistical procedure to estimate in vivo bull fertility using data from IVP. © 2011 Mateus José Sudano et al.
