The purpose of this study was to report a case of external ophthalmomyiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax in a 10 years-old child, which presented acute preseptal celulitis and had 17 worms removed from the lacrimal canaliculus and conjunctival cul de sac, bilaterally, with resolution. The authors discuss the diagnosis and treatment of this nosological entity.

The purpose of this paper is to report a recidivate basal cell carcinoma of the eyelid with orbital invasion located in the inner canthus of the left eye. A 79 year old, male, Caucasian patient had a basal cell carcinoma removed from the left inner eyelid canthus 8 years ago and the edges of the resection were compromised by the lesion. The patient had recurrence of the lesion and orbital invasion. He was submitted to orbital exenteration and the ethmoid bone was removed too. The authors call attention to the necessity of correct diagnosis and followup to have success in the management of the patient.

Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate an injectable extended-release formulation of prednisolone acetate (PA) for orbital administration. Methods: Microspheres (MEs) of poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) containing PA were developed by the method of solvent evaporation. The MEs obtained were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), encapsulation efficiency and in vitro release profile. The in vivo release profile was evaluated in rabbits after periocular injection of an aqueous suspension of MEs. The local biocompatibility of the system was verified by histopathologic analysis of the deployment region. Results: After MEs preparation, morphological analysis by SEM showed the feasibility of the employed method. The content of PA encapsulated was 43 ± 7% and can be considered as satisfactory. The system characterization by DSC technique, in addition to confirm the system stability, did not indicate the existence of interaction between the drug and the polymer. The in vitro release study showed the prolonged-release features of the developed system. Preliminary in vivo study showed the absence of local toxicity and confirmed the prolonged release profile of PA from MEs, suggesting the viability of the developed system for the treatment of orbital inflammatory diseases. Conclusion: The results obtained in this work are relevant and accredit the system developed as a possible alternative to the treatment of inflammatory orbitopathy.

Purpose: To observe the frequency of the occurrence of the anophthalmic socket in the Middle West region of the state of São Paulo and to describe the demographic profile of the carriers in a population-based data. Methods: A cross-sectional study involve a random sampling carried out in twelve cities of the Middle West region of the state of São Paulo, for which the reference center is the city of Botucatu was done. The participators were chosen by assortment which considered the houses of these people. It was established a sampling with 11,453 people. All the exams were realized using a Mobile Ophthalmologic Unit. The research protocol included the demographic data and the complete ophthalmologic exam (anamnesis, ocular and systemic antecedents, familiar antecedents, visual acuity with and without correction, tonometry, biomicroscopy, fundoscopy, and refraction exam). All the data were transferred to an Excel spreadsheet and submitted to a descriptive analysis and were presented by the frequency of the occurrence. Results: Ophthalmic socket frequency in the Middle West region of the state of São Paulo was 0.96%. We found 11 cases of anophthalmic socket, with involvement of 0.7 % in females and 1.3 %, male. The most common causes of anophthalmic socket were glaucoma (blind painful eye), microphthalmia, trauma, and endophthalmitis. The majority of the people were 40 years old or more, and we found just one person younger than 19 years old. Conclusion: The anophthalmic socket occurred in 0.96% of the habitants of the Middle West region of São Paulo State, occurring mainly in male and with large variety of the affected ages.
