The purpose of this work is to study the 20Li(2)O-80TeO(2) glass using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques in order to understand the crystallization kinetics on this glass matrix. To study the glass by DSC, screened samples with different particle sizes to resolve the observed asymmetrical crystallization peak were used. DSC curves for particles smaller than 38 mum in size show two distinct crystallization peaks, associated to distinct phase transformation in this glass, leading to activation energies at 301 and 488 kJ mol(-1). XRD analysis reveals that the first crystallization peak is attributed to TeO2 crystalline phase while the second one to the alpha-TeO3 and an unidentified phase.(C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Nucleation process and crystal growth for three samples of the (20-x)Li(2)O-80TeO(2)-xWO(3) glass system were studied using X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. X-ray diffraction data confirmed the amorphous characteristic of the as-quenched samples and indicated the growth of crystalline phases formed due to the thermal treatment for annealed samples. These results reveal the presence of three distinct gamma-TeO(2), alpha-TeO(2) and alpha-Li(2)Te(2)O(5) crystalline phases in the TL sample, and two distinct alpha-TeO(2) and gamma-TeO(2) crystalline phases in the TLW5 and TLW10 samples. The activation energy and the Avrami exponent were determined from DSC measurements. The activation energy values X-ray diffraction data of the TLW10 glass sample suggest that gamma-TeO(2) phase occur before the alpha-TeO(2). The results obtained for the Avrami exponent point to that the nucleation process is volumetric and that the crystal growth is two or three-dimensional.

Glass samples with the composition (mol%) 80TeO(2)-10Nb(2)O(5)-5K(2)O-5Li(2)O, stable against crystallization, were prepared containing Yb3+, Tm3+ and Ho3+. The energy transfer and energy back transfer mechanisms in samples containing 5% Yb3+-5% Tm3+ and 5% Yb3+-5% Tm3+-0.5% Ho3+ were estimated by measuring the absorption and fluorescence spectra together with the time dependence of the Yb3+ F-2(5/2) excited state. A good fit for the luminescence time evolution was obtained with the Yokota-Tanimoto's diffusion-limited model. The up-conversion fluorescence was also studied in 5% Yb-5% Tm. 5% Yb-0.5% Ho and 5% Yb-5% Tm-0.5% Ho tellurite glasses under laser excitation at 975 nm. Strong emission was observed from (1)G(4) and F-3(2) Tm3+ energy levels in all samples. The S-5(2) Ho3+ emission was observed only in Yb3+Ho3+ samples being completely quenched in Yb3+/Tm3+/Tm3+ samples. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Blue luminescence emission around 480 nm through cooperative upconversion from pairs of Yb3+ ions implanted into 60TeO(2)-10GeO(2)-10K(2)O-10Li(2)O-10Nb(2)O(5) tellurite glasses and excited by a cw laser at 1.064 mum is demonstrated. Cooperative luminescence emission enhancement owing to the temperature dependent multiphonon-assisted anti-Stokes excitation process of the ytterbium ions is also observed. The experimental results revealed a fourfold enhancement in the cooperative luminescence emission when the sample was heated in the temperature range of 20 degreesC-260 degreesC. The thermally induced enhancement is assigned to the effective absorption cross-section for the ytterbium ions which is an increasing function of the medium temperature. Red, green, and blue emission through frequency upconversion and energy-transfer processes in tellurite glasses doped with Tm3+ and Er3+ excited at 1.064 mum is investigated. The Tm3+/Er3+-codoped samples produced intense upconversion emission signals at around 480, 530, 550 and 660 nm. The 480 nm blue emission was originated from the (1)G(4)-->H-3(6) transition of the Tm3+ ions excited by a multiphoton stepwise phonon-assisted excited-state absorption process. The 5 30, 5 50 nm green and 660 mn red upconversion luminescences were identified as originating from the H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2) --> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) --> I-4(15/2) transitions of the Er3+ ions, respectively, populated via efficient cross-relaxation processes and excited-state absorption. White light generation employing a single infrared excitation source is also examined. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. (USA). All rights reserved.

Temperature investigation of infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion in erbium-doped tellurite glasses excited by CW laser radiation at 1540 nm and under cryogenic temperatures is reported. Intense upconversion emission signals around 530, 550 and 660 nm corresponding to the H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2), and F-4(9/2) transitions to the I-4(15/2) ground state were generated and studied as a function of the laser intensity and temperature. The upconversion excitation mechanism of the Er3+ ions emitting energy levels was accomplished via stepwise multiphoton absorption. The green upconversion luminescence exhibited a fivefold intensity enhancement when the temperature of the sample was varied in the range between 5 and 300 K. A maximum green upconversion intensity was attained around 120 K and a steady decreasing behavior for higher temperatures up to 300 K was observed. A model based upon conventional rate equations was used to model the observed temperature evolution of the upconversion luminescence. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Upconversion luminescence and thermal effects in Pr3+/Yb3+- and Er3+/Yb3+-codoped 60TeO(2)-10GeO(2)-10K(2)O-10Li(2)O-10Nb(2)O(5) tellurite glasses excited by CW infrared radiation at 1.064 mum is reported. Generation of intense green and red fluorescence emission in Er3+/Yb3+-codoped samples and appreciable upconversion luminescence in the wavelength region of 450-680 nm in Pr3+/Yb3+-codoped samples is observed. Temperature-induced enhancement of X12 in the upconversion efficiency in Er3+/Yb3+- and X10 in the Pr3+/Yb3+-doped samples is demonstrated. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Alkali niobium tellurite glasses have been prepared and some of their properties measured by differential scanning calorimetry and Raman scattering. The vitreous domain was established in the pseudo ternary phases diagram for the system TeO2-Nb2O5-(0.5K(2)O-0.5Li(2)O). Raman scattering shows that for samples in the TeO2 rich part of the phase diagram the vitreous structure is composed essentially of (TeO4) units connected by the vertices, as in the alpha-TeO2 crystal. The addition of alkali and niobium oxides causes depolymerization to occur with structures composed essentially of (TeO3) and (NbO6) units. Samples with the composition (mol%) 80TeO(2)-10Nb(2)O(5)-5K(2)O-5Li(2)O, stable against crystallization, were prepared containing up to 10% mol Nd3+. The addition of this oxide increases the rigidity of the vitreous network shifting characteristic temperatures to higher temperatures. For the 10% Nd3+ sample amorphous phase separation is assumed to exist from the observation of two glass transition temperatures. Spectroscopic properties such as Judd-Ofelt Omega(lambda) intensity parameters, radiative emission probabilities, and induced emission cross sections were calculated. From these results and also from the emission quenching observed as a function of Nd3+ concentration, we suggest that these glasses could be utilized in optical amplifying devices. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of tellurite glasses with different compositions were investigated in the femtosecond regime at 810 nm. Using the I-scan technique, positive nonlinear refractive indices of similar to 10(-15) cm(2)/W were measured. The authors also determined that nonlinear absorption was negligible for all studied samples. This result, added to their good chemical stability, indicates that tellurite glasses are promising materials for ultrafast photonic applications. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

In this work the thermal lens, thermal relaxation calorimetry and interferometric methods are applied to investigate the thermo-optical properties of tellurite glasses (in mol%: 80TeO(2)-20 Li2O(TeLi), 80TeO(2)-15Li(2)O-5TiO(2) (TeLiTi-5) and 80TeO(2)-10Li(2)O-10TiO(2) (TeLiTi-10)). Thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, specific heat and the temperature coefficients of refractive index, optical path length, thermal expansion and electronic polarizability were determined. The use of three independent methods was useful for a complete characterization of the studied tellurite glasses. In addition, our results showed that the thermal expansion coefficient and the temperature coefficient of the optical path length (dS/dT) were significantly modified with the introduction of titanium, which may be relevant for the application of these glasses in the photonic area.
