Xylella fastidiosa is the etiologic agent of diseases in a wide range of economically important crops including citrus variegated chlorosis, a major threat to the Brazilian citrus industry. The genomes of several strains of this phytopathogen have been completely sequenced enabling large-scale functional studies. In this work we used whole-genome DNA microarrays to investigate the transcription profile of X. fastidiosa grown in defined media with different glucose concentrations. Our analysis revealed that while transcripts related to fastidian gum production were unaffected, colicin-V-like and fimbria precursors were induced in high glucose medium. Based on these results, we suggest a model for colicin-defense mechanism in X. fastidiosa.

This study investigated the effects of growth hormone therapy on energy expenditure, lipid profile, oxidative stress and cardiac energy metabolism in aging and obesity conditions. Life expectancy is increasing in world population and with it, the incidence of public health problems such as obesity and cardiac alterations. Because growth hormone (GH) concentration is referred to be decreased in aging conditions, a question must be addressed: what is the effect of GH on aging related adverse changes? To investigate the effects of GH on cardiac energy metabolism and its association with calorimetric parameters, lipid profile and oxidative stress in aged and obese rats, initially 32 male Wistar rats were divided into 2 groups (n = 16), C: given standard-chow and water; H: given hypercaloric-chow and receiving 30 % sucrose in its drinking water. After 45 days, both C and H groups were divided into 2 subgroups (n = 8), C + PL: standard-chow, water, and receiving saline subcutaneously; C + GH: standard-chow, water, and receiving 2 mg/kg/day rhGH subcutaneously; H + PL: hypercaloric-chow, 30 % sucrose, receiving saline subcutaneously; H + GH: hypercaloric-chow, 30 % sucrose, receiving rhGH subcutaneously. After 30 days, C + GH and H + PL rats had higher body mass index, Lee-index, body fat content, percent-adiposity, serum triacylglycerol, cardiac lipid-hydroperoxide, and triacylglycerol than C + PL. Energy-expenditure (RMR)/body weight, oxygen consumption and fat-oxidation were higher in H + GH than in H + PL. LDL-cholesterol was highest in H + GH rats, whereas cardiac pyruvate-dehydrogenase and phosphofrutokinase were higher in H + GH and H + PL rats than in C + PL. In conclusion, the present study brought new insights on aging and obesity, demonstrating for the first time that GH therapy was harmful in aged and obesity conditions, impairing calorimetric parameters and lipid profile. GH was disadvantageous in control old rats, having undesirable effects on triacylglycerol accumulation and cardiac oxidative stress.

Phosphorus is a nutrient that most limits plant growth because of its importance in nutrition and low concentration in tropical soils. The present study aimed to evaluate the response of guava to application of phosphorus. For this, the experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at UNESP, Jaboticabal Campus, with guava plants (cv. Paluma) from herbaceous plants cultivated in plastic bags (2.8 dm(-3)), filled with Alfissol (P = 2 mg dm(-3)), between November 2007 and April 2008. The treatments consisted of five doses of phosphorus (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg dm(-3)) in the form of triple superphosphate (44% P(2)O(5)), arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. After 100 days of transplantation evaluated the phosphorus content in soil, dry weight of shoot and root phosphorus and zinc in the shoot. The highest production of dry weight guava was a dose of 257 g dm(-3) of phosphorus and was associated with P content in soil and leaf 110 mg dm(-3) and 2,3 g kg(-1).

The contribution of growth and turnover to the muscle delta C-13 change process was investigated using mathematical models which associate delta C-13 change to time of intake of a new diet or increase in body mass. Two groups of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were fed on diets based on C3 (sigma C-13 = - 25.64 +/- 0.06 parts per thousand) or C4 (delta C-13= -16.01 +/- 0.06 parts per thousand) photosynthetic cycle plants to standardize the muscle delta C-13. After establishing the carbon isotopic equilibrium, fish (mean mass 24.12 +/- 6.79 g) then received the other treatment diet until a new carbon isotopic equilibrium could be established, characterizing T1 (C3-C4) and T2 (C4-C3) treatments. No significant differences were observed in fish productive performance. Good fits were obtained for the models that associated the delta C-13 change to time, resulting in carbon half-life values of 23.33 days for T1 and 25.96 days for T2. Based on values found for the muscle delta C-13 change rate from growth (0.0263 day(-1) and 0.0254 day(-1)) and turnover (0.0034 day(-1) and 0.0013 day(-1)), our results indicate that most of the delta C-13 change could be attributed to growth. The application of model that associated the delta C-13 change to body mass increase seems to produce results with no apparent biological explanation. The delta C-13 change rate could directly reflect the daily ration and growth rate, and consequently the isotopic change rates of carbon and other tissue elements can be properly used to assess different factors that may interfere in nutrient utilization and growth. The effects of different feeding schemes on pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus early development were evaluated with respect to growth, survival, muscle development, and differential gene expression of MyoD and myogenin. The pacu larvae (4 days post hatch-dph, 0.77 mg wet weight) were given six feeding treatments intentionally designed to cause variations in the larvae growth rate: (A) only artemia nauplii; (CD) only a commercial diet; (ED) only a semi-purified experimental diet; (ACD) and (AED) two treatments that involved weaning; and (S) starvation. Early weaning from artemia nauplii to the formulated diets (ACD and AED) affected growth and survival of the pacu larvae compared with the exclusive use of artemia (A). Starvation (S) and the commercial diet (CD) caused total mortality in pacu larvae at 18 dph. The experimental diet (ED) assured low fish survival and growth. The skeletal muscle morphology was not affected by the delay in somatic growth from early weaning onto the formulated diets. Three distinct muscle compartments were observed throughout the larval development in treatments A, ACD and AED: superficial, deep and intermediate, accompanied by muscle thickening. Severe undernourishment caused drastic differences in growth and in the morphology of the muscle fibers. Pacu larvae fed only formulated diets (CD and ED) showed muscle characteristics similar to the larvae in starvation (S) during the first 15 dph. At 27 and 35 dph, a slight increase in epaxial muscle mass was noted in larvae fed only the experimental diet (ED). At 35 dph, we observed a high frequency of fibers >= 40 mu m in the larvae that were weaned onto the formulated diets (ACD and AED), indicative of hypertrophy. In contrast, the larvae fed only artemia nauplii (A) displayed a larger number of fibers with diameters <= 20 mu m, which is indicative of hyperplasia. The expression of the MyoD and myogenin genes in pacu larvae at 35 dph was not affected by initial feeding (p>0.05). In conclusion, the formulated diets used impaired pacu larvae growth and survival; therefore, they were inadequate for pacu, at least at the times they were introduced. Artemia nauplii were the most adequate food source during first feeding of the pacu, and they produced bigger fish upon completion of the experiment. Moreover, the contribution of hyperplasia to the skeletal muscle growth appeared higher in fast- than in slow-growing pacu larvae. (C) 2011 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

The objective of this experiment was to determine the normal values of Bone Radiographic Density (BRD) by using the optical densitometry in radiographic images and the Bone Breaking Strength (BBS) of broiler femurs at different ages (8, 22 and 42 d of age). A total of 60 Cobb male broilers were distributed in three age groups of 20 birds. The BRD and the BBS (maxim force and rigidity) values increased (p<0.01) over the course of ages, presenting greater values at 42 d of age when comparing to 8 and 22 d of age, evidencing a biomechanical adaptation of femur to growth. This experiment offers results that can be used in other experiments of broilers fed with different nutritional levels and they can also be related to pathological values, allowing the diagnosis of diseases that affect the integrity of the poultry leg. © Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2011.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated posteroanterior cephalograms before and after treatment and long term follow-up of Class II division 1 patients treated with bionator. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to demonstrate the transverse growth of maxilla and mandible during and after bionator therapy. METHODS: Measurement of transverse dimensions between posterior maxillary and mandibular implants, as well as the distances between the buccal, gonial and antegonial points were recorded. Measurements were analyzed at three periods: T1 = before bionator therapy, T2 = after bionator therapy and T3 = 5.74 years after T2. RESULTS: There was statistically significant transverse increase due to growth and/or treatment for all variables, except for the distance between the anterior maxillary implants. CONCLUSIONS: During the study period only the anterior maxillary area did not show transverse growth.
