Monte Carlo simulation results for pure liquid acetone and water-acetone mixtures calculated in the isothermal and isobaric (NPT) ensemble at T=298K and p=1.0atm are presented. The TIP4P model was used for water and optimized potential for liquid simulation (OPLS) force field parameters used for acetone. The results obtained for the average configurational energy as a function of the mole fraction are in good accord with experimental data. Energy partitioning and co-ordination numbers results calculated for equimolar water-acetone solution are compared to similar data obtained for other water-organic liquid mixtures. These results show an increase in water-water interaction energy and co-ordination numbers when the interaction between water and organic liquid molecules decrease. Distribution functions for pure liquid acetone and water-acetone mixtures are presented. Dipole-dipole angular correlation functions obtained for pure liquid acetone show a predominance of dimers with parallel alignment of dipole moments. Radial distribution functions from water-acetone interaction show characteristic features of hydrogen bonded liquids. Radial and angular distribution functions for water-water correlation calculated in pure water and in equimolar water-acetone mixture are compared, showing very similar features in both systems. The need for standardization of the measured blow count number N-spt into a normalized reference energy value is now fully recognized. The present paper extends the existing theoretical approach using the wave propagation theory as framework and introduces an analysis for large displacements enabling the influence of rod length in the measured N-spt values to be quantified. The study is based on both calibration chamber and field tests. Energy measurements are monitored in two different positions: below the anvil and above the sampler. Both experimental and numerical results demonstrate that whereas the energy delivered into the rod stem is expressed as a ratio of the theoretical free-fall energy of the hammer, the effective sampler energy is a function of the hammer height of fall, sampler permanent penetration, and weight of both hammer and rods. Influence of rod length is twofold and produces opposite effects: wave energy losses increase with increasing rod length and in a long rod composition the gain in potential energy from rod weight is significant and may partially compensate measured energy losses. Based on this revised approach, an analytical solution is proposed to calculate the energy delivered to the sampler and efficiency coefficients are suggested to account for energy losses during the energy transference process.

Using the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective potential for composite operators we compute the QCD vacuum energy as a function of the dynamical quark and gluon propagators, which are related to their respective condensâtes as predicted by the operator product expansion. The identification of this result to the vacuum energy obtained from the trace of the energy-momentum tensor allows us to study the gluon self-energy, verifying that it is fairly represented in the ultraviolet by the asymptotic behavior predicted by the operator product expansion, and in the infrared it is frozen at its asymptotic value at one scale of the order of the dynamical gluon mass. We also discuss the implications of this identity for heavy and light quarks. For heavy quarks we recover, through the vacuum energy calculation, the relation nij{filif)-îi(asl'n)GlivGllv obtained many years ago with QCD sum rules. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

In this work we show how to define the action of a scalar field such that the Robin boundary condition is implemented dynamically, i.e. as a consequence of the stationary action principle. We discuss the quantization of that system via functional integration. Using this formalism, we derive an expression for the Casimir energy of a massless scalar field under Robin boundary conditions on a pair of parallel plates, characterized by constants c(1) and c(2). Some special cases are discussed; in particular, we show that for some values of cl and c(2) the Casimir energy as a function of the distance between the plates presents a minimum. We also discuss the renormalization at one-loop order of the two-point Green function in the philambda(4) theory subject to the Robin boundary condition on a plate.

Thermal degradation of natural rubber extracted from four different rubber clones of the Hevea brasiliensis species was investigated by thermogravimetry using Ozawa's approach to assess the kinetic parameters of the decomposition process. The results are discussed in terms of the order of reaction, kinetic parameters such as activation energy as a function of conversion degree, and thermal stability for each of the clones.

The problem of power system stability including the effects of a flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) is approached. First, the controlled series compensation is considered in the machine against infinite bar system and its effects are taken into account by means of construction of a Lyapunov function (LF). This simple system is helpful in order to understand the form the device affects dynamic and transient performance of the power system. After, the multimachine case is considered and it is shown that the single-machine results apply to multimachine systems. An energy-form Lyapunov function is derived for the power system including the FACTS device and it is used to analyse damping and synchronizing effects due to the FACTS device in single-machine as well as in multimachine power systems. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The deuteron binding energy and wave function are calculated by using the recently developed three-dimensional form of low-momentum nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction. The homogeneous Lippmann-Schwinger equation is solved in momentum space by using the low-momentum two-body interaction, which is constructed from Malfliet-Tjon potential. The results for both, deuteron binding energy and wave function, obtained with low-momentum interaction, are compared with the corresponding results obtained with bare potential. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
