Synthesis and characterization of antimony tartrate used as a precursor of ceramic powders obtained by Pechini's method were carried out. Antimony tartrate was chosen as a substitute for the antimony citrate commonly used in this chemical processing, because of difficulties in preparing the citrate. FTIR and TGA/DTA analysis showed that antimony tartrate, H-2[Sb-2(C4H2O6)(2)]. forms a polymeric structure. The procedure described indicates that the antimony chelate obtained is adequate for Pechini's method.

A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize the photoluminescence properties of SrTiO3 perovskite thin films synthesized through a soft chemical processing. Only the amorphous samples present photoluminescence at room temperature. From the theoretical side, first principles quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory at B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of a crystalline (ST-c) and an asymmetric (ST-a) model. Electronic properties are analyzed in the light of the experimental results and their relevance in relation to the PL behavior of ST is discussed. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize the results of visible photoluminescence measurements at room temperature on Sr1-xTiO3-x (ST) perovskite thin films. From the experimental side, ST thin films, x = 0 to 0.9, have been synthesized following soft chemical processing, and the corresponding photoluminescence properties have been measured. First principles quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory at the B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of a crystalline, stoichiometric (x = 0) ST-s model and a nonstoichiometric (SrO-deficient, x not equal 0) and structurally disordered ST-d model. The relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results of the photoluminescence behavior of ST is discussed. The optical spectra and the calculations indicate that the symmetry-breaking process on going from ST-s to ST-d creates electronic levels in the valence band. Moreover, an analysis of the Mulliken charge distribution reveals a charge gradient in the structure. These combined effects seem to be responsible for the photoluminescence behavior of deficient Sr1-xTiO3-x.

Strong photoluminescent emission has been measured at room temperature for noncrystalline BaT'O-3 (BT) perovskite powders. A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize this phenomenon. From the experimental side, BT powder samples have been synthesized following a soft chemical processing, their crystal structure has been confirmed by x-ray data and the corresponding photoluminescence (PL) properties have been measured. Only the structurally disordered samples present PL at room temperature. From the theoretical side, first-principles quantum-mechanical techniques, based on density-functional theory at the B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of crystalline (BT-c) and asymmetric (BT-a) models. Theoretical and experimental results are found to be consistent and their confrontation leads to an interpretation of the PL apparition at room temperature in the structurally disordered powders.

A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize for the first time the photoluminescence (PL) properties of disordered CaWO4 (CWO) thin films. From the experimental side, thin films of CWO have been synthesized following a soft chemical processing, their structure has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction data and corresponding PL properties have been measured using the 488 nm line of an argon ion laser. Although we observe PL at room temperature for the crystalline thin films, the structurally disordered samples present much more intense emission. From the theoretical side, first principles quantum mechanical calculations, based on density functional theory at B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of a crystalline (CWO-c) and asymmetric (CWO-a) periodic model. Electronic properties are analyzed in the light of the experimental results and their relevance in relation to the PL behavior of CWO is discussed. The symmetry breaking process on going from CWO-c to CWO-a creates localized electronic levels above the valence band and a negative charge transfer process takes place from threefold, WO3, to fourfold, WO4,. tungsten coordinations. The correlation of both effects seems to be responsible for the PL of amorphous CWO. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Blue-green and red photoluminescence (PL) emission in structurally disordered CaTiO3:Sm (CT:Sm) powders was observed at room temperature with laser excitation at 350.7 nm. The perovskite-like titanate CT:Sm powders prepared by a soft chemical processing at different temperatures of annealing were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). The results indicate that the generation of the broad PL band is related to order-disorder degree in the perovskitelike structure. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

First-principles quantum-mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and deformed asymmetric models for Ba0.5Sr 0.5TiO3. Electronic properties are analyzed and the relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results on the photoluminescence behavior is discussed. The presence of localized electronic levels in the band gap, due to the symmetry break, would be responsible for the visible photoluminescence of the amorphous state at room temperature. Thin films were synthesized following a soft chemical processing. Their structure was confirmed by x-ray data and the corresponding photoluminescence properties measured.

This work approaches the analysis of industrial refrigeration systems applied to a chemical processing industry that, in this case, consists of refrigeration machines, cooling tower system, cold water system and brine system. In this study it is highlighted the function and characteristics of different systems, including the main components, the most important features, their functionality and best practices. The motivation for this work is the fact that refrigeration systems are essential in many industrial processes, presenting a high energy consumption that is related to a significant parcel of production costs. It has aimed to understand the case studied in order to evaluate the energy efficiency of systems and to compare with Carnot efficiency and best available technologies. The assessment aims to identify irregularities, find opportunities and propose solutions that increases the performance of equipment and the overall system efficiency. Therefore, the studies intend to reduce the operation costs and generate gains for the company

This work shows the chemical characterization of a dye processing plant effluent that was contributing to the mutagenicity previously detected in the Cristais river, São Paulo, Brazil, that had an impact on the quality of the related drinking water. The mutagenic dyes Disperse Blue 373, Disperse Orange 37 and Disperse Violet 93, components of a Black Dye Commercial Product (BDCP) frequently used by the facility, were detected by thin layer chromatography (TLC). The blue and orange dyes were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC/DAD) in a raw and treated effluent samples and their contribution to the mutagenicity was calculated based on the potency of each dye for the Salmonella YG1041. In the presence of S9 the Disperse Blue 373 accounted for 2.3% of the mutagenic activity of the raw and 71.5% of the treated effluent. In the absence of S9 the Disperse Blue 373 accounted for 1.3% of the mutagenic activity of the raw and 1.5% of the treated effluent. For the Disperse Orange 37, in the presence of S9, it contributed for 0.5% of the mutagenicity of the raw and 6% of the treated effluent. In the absence of S9; 11.5% and 4.4% of the raw and treated effluent mutagenicity, respectively. The contribution of the Disperse Violet 93 was not evaluated because this compound could not be quantified by HPLC/DAD. Mutagenic and/or carcinogenic aromatic amines were also preliminary detected using gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry in both raw and treated and are probably accounting for part of the observed mutagenicity. The effluent treatment applied by the industry does not seem to remove completely the multagenic compounds. The Salmomella/microsome assay coupled with TLC analysis seems to be an important tool to monitor the efficiency of azo dye processing plant effluent treatments. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Fruit of 28 tomato cultivars for industrial processing were characterized to identify cultivars with potential for in natura consumption. The experiment was carried out in Jaboticabal-SP, Brazil (21o15'22'' South, 48o18'58'' West, altitude 595 m), on a Haplorthox soil during June-December. The cultivars used in this study were: H 7155, Hypeel 108, Andino, U 573, H 9036, Ipa 6, H 9494, AG 33, Yuba, RPT 1294, AG 72, Peelmech, Curicó, Hypeel 45, RPT 1478, H 9492, H 9498, H 2710, Hitech 45, Halley, Botu 13, H 9553, U 646, NK 1570, AG 45, RPT 1095, RPT 1570 and PSX 37511. The experimental design was randomized blocks, replicated four times. Ten fruits per plot were analyzed, evaluating the following characteristics: shape (oblong or round); length and diameter (mm); external and internal coloration; presence of fissures; number of loci; pulp thickness (mm); soluble solids content (Brix) and total acidity. Only cultivars Hypeel 108, AG 72, NK 1570, RPT 1570 had oblong fruit. Cultivars which had pulp thicker than 5.5 mm, a characteristic which is directly related to fruit yield for industrial purposes were: Ipa 6, Andino, U 646, H 9553, RPT 1294 and Hypeel 108. Cultivars Ipa 6 and Andino also presented elevated values for length, diameter and pulp thickness, indicating them as quality material for industry or, alternatively, for in natura market. Among the cultivars which presented better values for acidity (higher or equal to 0.3 g citric acid 100 g-1) were RPT 1095, AG 45, H 9553 and Hypeel 45.

The influence of weight (W) category of the rainbow trout on processing yield and chemical composition of the entire eviscerated fish and fish fillet was analyzed. A completely randomized design was employed for processing variables (W1 = 300 to 370 g and W2 = 371 to 440) coupled to a 2 x 2 factorial scheme for the chemical composition (W1 and W2 and forms of presentation: fillet and whole eviscerated fish). W1 showed higher yield for entire eviscerated fish (83.00%) and head (13.27%), but a lower yield for the viscera (17.00%), when compared to W2. We did not affect abdominal muscle yield, fillet with or without skin, skin percentage and residues. There were significant differences between W for moisture (W1 = 72.30% and W2 = 71.15%) and lipids (CP1 = 7.96% and CP2 = 9.04%) rates. Fillet moisture contents (73.74%) and crude protein (19.05%) were higher (p < 0.01) than for entire eviscerated fish (69.71% and 17.81%, respectively). Ash (2.15%) and lipid (10.48%) rates were higher (p < 0.01) for entire fish when compared to those of fillets (1.16% and 6.52%, respectively). The slaughter of fish weighing between 300 and 370 g and their fillets are more adequate for the market.
