The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of fasting period in the last growing phase on carcass yield and composition of male broilers. Two thousand one-day old male chicks were distributed in five randomized blocks according to a 4x2 factorial (four feeding programs (P): ad libitum or one of three fasting schedules: 8-12, 12-16 and 8-16; and two strains (S): Ross or Hubbard-Peterson, Fifty birds were used per replicate. Birds were raised under identical feed and management conditions until day 42. The fasting schedules were applied from day 43 to day 56. At day 56, five birds per replicate were randomly sampled, weighed, slaughtered, eviscerated, dry-cooled, cut and deboned. No effects of P or SxP interaction were observed for carcass characteristics. birds, which showed higher weights and yields of head plus neck, feet, leg bones and wings. The ad libitum birds showed higher crude protein in thigh meat than those submitted to the 8-12 h fast. A SxP interaction was observed for meat ash content. The R broilers showed higher ash content in breast and thigh meat than the H birds in the 8-12 h fast treatment. on the other hand, the R broilers submitted to the 8-12 h fast showed higher ash contents in breast and thigh meat than birds from the same strain in the other feeding programs. Fasting in the last phase of rearing did not alter the yield of whole carcass, carcass cuts and abdominal fat, but morning fast influenced carcass chemical composition.

The possibilities of using the sperm collected from the epididymis have been widely used because the fertilizing capacity sperm preservation and the possibility of using it for wild cats. But in the process of cryopreservation, some studies show a decrease in the quality of the sperm when left under cooling before frozen for some time. This study aimed to assess the quality of the epididymal sperm obtained from domestic cats after cryopreservation using a diluent based on egg yolk and glycerol (Botu-crio®), comparing the morphofunctional characteristics after cooling for 24 hours in a container of semen transport (Botu-tainer®). We use eight cats submitted to elective orchiectomy, aging from eight months, without racial determination, and good nutritional status. These sperm characteristics were: motility, vigor, concentration, membrane integrity and morphology. It has been found, after statistical analysis, that the container of semen was able to maintain sperm viability, even for 24h. We also observed a significant decrease on all parameters after frozen, consequential, probably to thermal stress that occurs in processing. However, the percentage of membrane integrity after thawing shows good employability of the Botu-crio®, which viability is possible to perform in vitro fertilization, requiring higher ratings.

This paper aims the preparation, characterization and study of luminescence, particularly as for the cerium ion action as activator or sensitizer, in diphenylphosphinate of lanthanum compounds trivalent ions cerium-, europium-, and/or terbium-doped. The following compounds were prepared and studied: i) La1-(x+y)CexEuy(DFF)3; ii) La1-(x+y)CexTby(DFF)3; iii) La1-(x+y+z)CexEuyTbz(DFF)3, with x = 10%, y = 5% e z = 5%. The diphenylphosphinate of lanthanum, Ln[(Ph2)PO2]3, are complexes obtained by the mixture of lanthanides chlorides with diphenylphosphinic acid, ethanol medium. These compounds make white powders, crystalline, insoluble in normal temperature and pressure, and are chemically and thermally stable. When doping with Ce3+, Eu3+ and/or Tb3+, the compounds present characteristic luminescence. Luminescent materials are made of a host matrix incorporated with few amounts of ions called activators, which are able to present luminescence after being excited by UV light or high energy radiation, and sensitizer ions, which have the role of absorbing excitation energy and transfer it to the activator, for it to emit luminescence radiation. The infrared vibrational spectroscopy indicates that the coordination occurs by the oxygens of phosphorile group with ΔνPO of about 40 cm-1 compared to the free ligand. The X Ray difractograms of compounds Eu- and/or Tb-doped are similar, but they present profile of diffraction different observed by Stucchi and col. In previous papers, indicated an influence of Ce in the crystalline phase formation of these matrices. In luminescence spectrums, the excitation that can be made by the levels of ligand in 273 nm, or cerium ion in area between 300 and 400 nm were observed. In the emission spectrum, with excitation in 273 nm, is possible to observe the emission of Ce3+ below 400 nm and the Eu3+ in 592, 611 and 617 nm, and the...as a sensitizer to.

The objective of this study was to determine whether replacing the egg yolk with soybean lecithin in the Botu-Crio (R) cryodiluent would maintain the fertility of cryopreserved stallion sperm. Two experiments were performed to evaluate cell freezability. In experiment 1, sperm from 15 stallions were frozen in Botu-Crio (R) (BC) or Botu-Crio (R) which contained 45 g/L soybean lecithin (BCLS45) in place of the egg yolk. In experiment 2, we compared different concentrations of soybean lecithin: 0, 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 and 20.0 g/L (BC, BCLS10, BCLS12.5, BCLS17.5 and BCLS20, respectively). In experiment 1, sperm frozen in BC and BCLS45 exhibited similar (P > 0.05) percentages of total motile sperm (61% and 61%, respectively); progressively motile sperm (27% and 27%, respectively) and sperm with intact plasma membranes (IMP; 53% and 57%, respectively). Similarly, sperm frozen in BC or BC containing any concentration of soybean lecithin maintained similar (P > 0.05) percentages of total motile sperm (61-68%) and progressively motile sperm (27-31%). In the first fertility trial, we used cryopreserved semen from a single stallion was inseminated into mares. The semen from the sperm that were frozen in BC diluent resulted in a higher fertility rate (66%, 16/24) compared to the sperm that were frozen in BCLS45 diluent (17%, 5/29; P < 0.01). Similarly, in a second fertility trial, the mares that were inseminated with the sperm that were frozen in BC diluent exhibited a higher fertility rate (66%, 16/24) compared to the mares that were inseminated with the sperm that were frozen in BCLS20 (40%, 10/25; Pc 0.05). Finally, in a third trial, the sperm that were frozen in BC resulted in a higher fertility rate in mares (75%, 18/24) compared to the sperm that were frozen in BCLS10 (41%, 10/24; P < 0.05). Although replacing the egg yolk in the BC cryodiluent with soybean lecithin provided similar laboratory results for stallion sperm, after cryopreservation, the sperm that was frozen with soybean lecithin in the diluent correlated with lower fertility rates. Based on these results, we concluded that the use of BCLS can be used as an alternative diluent for cryopreserving stallion sperm. However, the resulting reduced fertility rate is a matter of concern. Further studies are necessary to clarify the reasons for this decrease in fertility and to determine the optimal lecithin concentration for diluents to freeze stallion sperm. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The aim of the current study was to verify that stallion, spermatoza could be cooled for 24 hours and then frozen. In experiment I, one ejaculate from each of 13 stallions was used. Semen was collected and split into two parts; one part immediately frozen using standard cryo-preservation techniques and the other diluted, stored in an Equitainer for 24 hours, and then frozen. In experiment II, one ejaculate from each of 12 stallions was collected, diluted with Botu-Semen, and split into two parts: one cooled in an Equitainer and the other in Max-Semen Express without prior centrifugation. After 24 hours of cooling, the samples were centrifuged to remove seminal plasma and concentrate the sperm, and resuspended in Botu-Crio (R) extender containing on e of three cryoprotectant treatments (1% glycerol + 4% dimethylformamide, 1% glycerol + 4% dimethylacetamide and 1% glycerol + 4% methylformamide), maintained at 5 degrees C for 20 minutes, then frozen in nitrogen vapour. No difference was observed between the two cooling systems. The association of 1% glycerol and 4% methylformamide provided the best post-thaw progressive motility. For experiment III, two stallions were used for a fertility trial. Forty three inseminations were performed using 22 mares. No differences were seen in semen parameters and pregnancy rates when comparing the two freezing protocols (conventional and cooled/frozen). Pregnancy rates for conventional and cooled/frozen semen were, respectively, 72.7% and 82.3% (stallion A), and 40.0% and 50.0% (stallion B). We concluded that cooling equine-semen for 24 hours before freezing while maintaining sperm viability and fertility is possible.

The effect of the utilization of three semen protocols (Inra 82®, Merck Gema and Botu-crio®) and two filling techniques (0.25 and 0.50 mL straws) in Mangalarga Marchador stallions were studied in this experiment. Sperm parameters were assessed during processing and post-freezing. No interactions between the protocols and type of filling were observed, so they were assessed separately. Sperm parameters were not altered when the extender was added to the centrifugation; however, there was reduction of motility and strength when freezing extenders were added. The Botu-crio® protocol preserved the parameters of total and progressive sperm motility, smoothed path velocity (µm/s), straight line velocity (µm/s), track velocity (µm/s) and the average and fast spermatozoa percentage better than the others. No difference between the extenders for the percentage of sperm integrity was observed. There was no difference in the responses studied on the filling techniques. The stallions presented better freezing with the use of the Botu-crio® protocol. The best post-freezing viability results were found for semen frozen using the Botu-crio® protocol and there were no differences concerning the sperm quality comparing 0.25 and 0.50 mL straws.

Inseminations with frozen-thawed epididymal sperm have resulted in low-pregnancy rates of mares. If fertility of epididymal sperm could be improved, it would help to preserve genetic material from stallions that have suffered severe injuries, been castrated or have died. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of different extenders and pre-freezing addition of capacitation media on freezability of epididymal sperm and on storage at 5 degrees C for 24 h. In experiment 1, epididymal sperm samples were diluted and subsequently frozen with three different extenders: Botu-Crio((R)), EDTA-Lactose and INRA-82. Motility analysis using computer assisted sperm analyzer (CASA) demonstrated better motility for sperm in Botu-Crio((R)) than in the other extenders; EDTA-Lactose yielded better motility than INRA-82 on most evaluated parameters. There was no difference in membrane integrity among the studied extenders. From 18 inseminated mares, 12 (66%) were pregnant 15 days after AI with frozen-thawed epididymal sperm showing that Botu-Crio((R)) was able to maintain the fertility potential. In experiment 2, the effect of incubation of epididymal sperm before freezing in three capacitation media (Fert Talp, Sperm Talp, Talp + Progesterone), seminal plasma, or control was tested. Based on post-thaw motility evaluation by CASA, samples incubated in Sperm Talp showed better motility values. There were no differences in plasma or acrosomal membranes or in mitochondrial potential among groups. We concluded that Botu-Crio((R)) was better than the other extenders in the ability to preserve epididymal sperm and that pre-freeze addition of Sperm Talp was also beneficial. O esofagograma e o exame endoscópico revelaram lesão vegetante no terço distal do esôfago.
