Optimal phasor measurement units placement for fault location on overhead electric power distribution feeders

This paper proposes a new approach for optimal phasor measurement units placement for fault location on electric power distribution systems using Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure metaheuristic and Monte Carlo simulation. The optimized placement model herein proposed is a general methodology that can be used to place devices aiming to record the voltage sag magnitudes for any fault location algorithm that uses voltage information measured at a limited set of nodes along the feeder. An overhead, three-phase, three-wire, 13.8 kV, 134-node, real-life feeder model is used to evaluate the algorithm. Tests show that the results of the fault location methodology were improved thanks to the new optimized allocation of the meters pinpointed using this methodology. © 2011 IEEE.

Biosynthetic origins of the isoprene units of gaudichaudianic acid in Piper gaudichaudianum (Piperaceae)

The biosynthesis of (2S)-2-methyl-2-(4'-methyl-3-pentenyl)-8-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-2H-1-benzopyran-6-carboxylic acid (gaudichaudianic acid), the major metabolite in leaves and roots of Piper gaudichaudianum Kunth (Piperaceae), has been investigated employing [1(-13) C]-D-glucose as precursor. The labelling pattern in the isolated gaudichaudianic acid was determined by quantitative 13 C NMR spectroscopy analysis and was consistent with involvement of both mevalonic acid and 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol-4-phosphate pathways in the formation of the dimethylallyl- and geranyl-derived moieties. The results confirmed that both plastidic and cytoplasmic pathways are able to provide isopentenyl diphosphate units for prenylation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. INCREASE OF AVERAGE ENERGY BY THE PROCESS OF MEASUREMENT

A paradox is pointed out and resolved by proving that the average energy E = [H] of a macroscopic system in thermal equilibrium must increase by the measurement of an observable A which does not commute with the Hamiltonian H. The proof follows as a corollary of a more general result, which states that under certain conditions the expectation value [C] of an observable C should increase by the measurement of another observable A, if [A, C] not-equal 0.

On the germination and dormancy of dispersal units of Brachiaria decumbens STAPF

The effect of light and temperature on germination of Brachiaria decumbens as well as the action of some dormancy breaking chemicals were tested. Two seed batches stored different times were used. The results show that seeds failed to respond to alternating temperature regimes and different light qualities. Seeds were indifferent to white light at 25 degrees C. KNO3, ethanol and H2SO4 failed to break seed dormancy, whereas KCN and H2O2 partially reduced dormancy of two month stored seeds. The results suggest a metabolic character of dormancy in ''new'' (freshly collected) seeds and confirm the occurence of two types of dormancy in B. decumbens seeds.

The biosynthetic origins of the isoprene units of 4-nerolidylcatechol (1), the major constituent of Potomorphe umbellata, have been studied through feeding experiments with [14C]- and [13C]-glucose, and with precursors of the mevalonic acid and triose/pyruvate pathways, namely, [2- 14C]-mevalonolactone and [U-14C]-glyceraldehyde-3- phosphate, respectively. The pattern of incorporation of label from [1- 13C]-glucose into 1 was determined by quantitative 13C NMR spectroscopy. The labelling pattern revealed that the additive was specifically incorporated, and that the isoprene units of the sesquiterpenoid moiety of 4-nerolidylcatechol were derived from both the mevalonic acid and the triose/pyruvate pathways. The results indicate that both plastidic and cytoplasmic pathways are able to provide isopentenyl diphosphate units for the biosynthesis of 1. ©2005 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

The electronic detail of a digital pH-meter

This paperwork presents the complete circuitry used to build a microcontroller-based pH-meter. Key control software is also discussed. An industry-standard glass combination electrode has been employed for pH detection. Electrode parameter extraction procedure is presented. Modeling approach based on experimental results for prediction of measurement errors in energy meters

This paper presents a general modeling approach to investigate and to predict measurement errors in active energy meters both induction and electronic types. The measurement error modeling is based on Generalized Additive Model (GAM), Ridge Regression method and experimental results of meter provided by a measurement system. The measurement system provides a database of 26 pairs of test waveforms captured in a real electrical distribution system, with different load characteristics (industrial, commercial, agricultural, and residential), covering different harmonic distortions, and balanced and unbalanced voltage conditions. In order to illustrate the proposed approach, the measurement error models are discussed and several results, which are derived from experimental tests, are presented in the form of three-dimensional graphs, and generalized as error equations. © 2009 IEEE.
