Thermogravimetry (TG) and other analysis techniques (EDX, SEM, Mapping surface, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled argon plasma emission spectroscopy and atomic spectrometry with cold vapor generation) were used to study the reaction of Hg with Rh. The results permitted the suggestion that, when subjected to heat, an electrodeposited Hg film reacts with Rh to form intermetallic products with different stabilities, as indicated by at least three mass loss steps. In the first step, between room temperature and 160°C, only the bulk Hg is removed. From this temperature up to about 175°C, the mass loss can be attributed to the desorption of a film of metallic Hg. The last step, from 175 to 240°C, can be ascribed to the removal of Hg from a thin dark film of RhHg2.

Thermogravimetry (TG), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mapping surface and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for the study of solid-state reaction on Pt-15%Rh with electrodeposited mercury. The results suggest when heated the mercury film react with the Pt-15%Rh alloy to form intermetallics having different thermal stabilities indicated by three mass loss steps. The first mass loss step occurs between room temperature and 184 degrees C only the bulk Hg is removed and PtHg4, PtHg2 and RhHg2 were characterized by XRD. The second step, between 184 and 271 degrees C, was attributed to PtHg4 decomposition with formation of PtHg2 stabilized by RhHg2. The third step, between 271 and 340 degrees C, was attributed to decomposition of a solid-solution of PtHg2/RhHg2. The fourth step, between 340 and 600 degrees C, was ascribed to: (1) a thermal decomposition of PtHg2, formed by a PtHg eutectoid reaction (similar to 340 degrees C) on the surface and (2) Hg removal from a solid solution of Pt-15%Rh(Hg). In situ solid state oxidation reaction for an alternative La1-xSrxMnO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) formation is reported. Samples have been obtained by using strontium peroxide, lanthanum and manganese (III) oxide reagents. Strontium peroxide has induced the oxidation of Mn+3 to Mn+4. Lanthanum strontium-doped manganite was obtained without secondary phase formation. La0.825Sr0.175MnO3 showed two structural transitions. The first from 88 to 373 K and the second at 1073 K. which are explained by Jahn-Teller effect at low temperature and cation displacement at high temperature. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The compound obtained via state solid reaction of the La2O3 and SrO oxides and expose the room atmosphere shows the crystallographic data of the compound reported as La2SrOx. However, thermogravimetric, differential thermal analysis and XRD with controlled temperature indicated that the stoichiometry of the compound is 2La(OH)(3)-SrCO3, which structural parameters were determined by using the Rietveld method. It was verified that when the compound exposed at room atmosphere, the mixture oxide absorbs H2O and CO2 producing hydroxide and carbonate of lanthanum and strontium, respectively, which thermal decomposition occurs by the same steps, producing the La2O3-SrO.

The electrochemical redox behavior of usnic acid, mainly known for its antibiotic activity, has been investigated using cyclic, differential pulse and square wave voltammetry in aqueous electrolyte. These studies were carried out by solid state voltammetry with the solid mechanically attached on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode and at different pH values. Usnic acid did not present any reduction reaction. The pH-dependent electrochemical oxidation occurs in three steps, one electron and one proton irreversible processes, assigned to each of the hydroxyl groups in the molecule. Adsorption of the non-electroactive oxidation product was also observed, blocking the electrode surface. An oxidation mechanism was proposed and electroanalytical methodology was developed to determine usnic acid.

The dehydration, thermal decomposition and transition phase stage of Zn(II)-diclofenac compound were studied by simultaneous TG-DTA and DSC techniques. The TG and DSC curves of this compound were obtained with the mass of sample of 2 and 5 mg. Additionally, DSC curves were carried out in opened and closed alpha-alumina pans under static and nitrogen atmosphere. The DTA and DSC curves show that this compound possesses exothermic transition phase between 170-180 degrees C, which it is irreversible (monotropic reaction) The kinetics study of this transition phase stage was evaluated by DSC under non-isothermal conditions. The obtained data were evaluated with the isoconversional method, where the values of activation energy (E(a) / kJ mol(-1)) was plotted in function of the conversion degree (alpha). The results show that due to mass sample, different activation energies were obtained From these curves a tendency can be seen where the plots maintain the same profile for closed lids and almost run parallel to each other.

Thermogravimetry, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and other analytical techniques (Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis; Scanning Electron Microscopy; Mapping Surface; X-ray Diffraction; Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy and Cold Vapor Generation Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) have been used to study the reaction of mercury with platinum foils. The results suggest that, when heated, the electrodeposited Hg film reacts with Pt to form intermetallic compounds each having a different stability, indicated by at least three mass loss steps. Intermetallic compounds such as PtHg4, PtHg and PtHg2 were characterized by XRD. These intermetallic compounds were the main products formed on the surface of the samples after partial removal of bulk mercury via thermal desorption. The Pt(Hg) solid solution formation caused great surface instability, attributed to the atomic size factor between Hg and Pt, facilitating the acid solution's attack to the surface.

The reactions of the pseudohalide-bridged dimer [Pd(N,C-dmba)(mu -SCN)](2) (1) (dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine) with cis-Ph2PCH=CHPPh2 (cis-dppet) (1:1 molar ratio) and of [Pd(N,C-dmba)(mu -NCO)](2) (2) with Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2 (dppe) (1:2 molar ratio) gave mononuclear [Pd(C-dmba)(SCN)(cis-dppet)].H2O (1a) and [Pd(C-dmba)(NCO)(dppe)] (2a), respectively, with the diphosphines acting as chelating ligands. Reaction of (2) with Fe(C5H4PPh2)(2) (dppf) (1:1 molar ratio) yielded [{Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)}(2)(mu -dppf)] (2b), a bimetallic species containing two palladium atoms bridged by the diphosphine, whereas reaction in a 1:2 molar ratio gave the mononuclear [Pd(N,C-dmba)(dppf)][NCO]. CH2Cl2 (2c), with the diphosphine acting as a chelating ligand. The compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, i.r., P-31{H-1}, C-13- and H-1-n.m.r. spectroscopies. Conductivity measurements together with spectroscopic data showed that (1a) and (2a) do not have the same structure in the solid state and in MeCl solution, whereas for compounds (2b) and (2c) no structural changes were observed when the solids were dissolved in MeCl.

Plasma treatments were applied on the surface of postconsumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles to increase their wettability and hasten the subsequent hydrolysis process. Sixty-four treatments were tested by varying plasma composition (oxygen and air), power (25-130 W), pressure (50-200 mTorr), and time (1 and 5 min). The best treatment was the one applied in air plasma at 130 W and 50 mTorr for 5 min, as it provided the lowest contact angle, 9.4°. Samples of PET before and after the optimized plasma condition were subjected to hydrolysis at 205°C. Although the treatment changed only a thin surface layer, its influence was evident up to relatively high conversion rates, as the treated samples presented more than 40% higher conversion rates than the untreated ones after 2 h of reaction. Infrared spectroscopy showed that the terephthalic acid obtained from 99% of depolymerization was similar to the commercial product used in PET synthesis. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
