Aim: To assess the contribution of a multimodal exercise program on the sleep disturbances (SD) and on the performance of instrumental activities daily living (IADL) in patients with clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease patients (PD). Methods: A total of 42 consecutive patients (23 training group, 19 control group) with PD and 35 demented patients with AD (19 trained group, 16 control group) were recruited. Participants in both training groups carried out three 1-h sessions per week of a multimodal exercise program for 6 months. The Pfeffer Questionnaire for Instrumental Activities and the Mini-Sleep Questionnaire were used to assess the effects of the program on IADL and SD respectively. Results: Two-way ancova showed interactions in IADL and SD. Significant improvements were observed for these variables in both intervention groups, and maintenance or worsening was observed in control groups. The analysis of effect size showed these improvements. Conclusion: The present study results show that a mild to moderate intensity of multimodal physical exercises carried out on a regular basis over 6 months can contribute to reducing IADL deficits and attenuating SD. © 2013 Japan Geriatrics Society.

Is common the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's disease (AD), this is resulted of anatomical and biochemical changes in the brain. The objective of present study was to look for papers relating physical activity and neuropsychiatric symptoms through a systematic review. The following data bases was accessed: Academic Search Premier, Biological Abstracts, Medline, PsycINFO, Pubmed, Scielo, Science direct on line, Sport Discus and Web of Science, using the following key-words: (Neuropsychiatric disturbances OR Neuropsychiatric symptoms OR Neuropsychological disturbances OR Aberrant behavior OR Aberrant behaviour OR Behavior disturbances OR Behaviour disturbances OR Behavior management OR Behaviour management OR Disruptive behavior OR Disruptive behaviour) and (Alzheimer) and (Exercise OR Motor intervention OR training OR Physical activity OR fitness), besides crossing the references in the selected articles. Eight studies had filled the inclusion criteria. It was possible to conclude there are evidences of positive results for agitation and sleep disturbances in patients with AD. However, there's no consensus of what kind of activity is better for these patients.

INTRODUCTION: A significant benefit from physical activity has recently been described in some patients who suffer from neurodegenerative diseases. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of physical activity on neuropsychiatric disturbances in demented patients and on the mental burden of their caregivers. METHODS: Assisted by a public geriatric psychiatry clinical unit, we studied 59 patients with dementia. Patients were divided into three groups according to their diagnosis and level of physical activity. Data were assessed through a semi-structured interview. Patients were evaluated with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, the Mini-Sleep Questionnaire and the Baecke Questionnaire. The data were statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and linear regression, with the level of significance set at 5%. RESULTS: Patients with Alzheimer's or vascular dementia who engaged in physical activity had fewer neuropsychiatric symptoms than those who did not. When compared to the control group, the caregivers of patients with vascular dementia who engaged in physical activity had a reduced burden. CONCLUSION: The regular practice of physical activity seems to contribute to a reduction in neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia patients and to attenuate the burden of the caregivers of those patients.

The aim of this study was to present data as reported by parents on primary tooth eruption and the occurrence of local and systemic manifestations in children ages 0 to 3 years seen at the baby clinic of the Araçatuba Dental School, UNESP, São Paulo, Brazil. Data from 1,813 records were analyzed, yielding 1,165 records suitable for review. Some type of local and/or systemic manifestation during primary tooth eruption was reported for 95% (1,129) children studied. The predominant manifestation was gingival irritation (85%), while the least frequent symptom (26%) was a runny nose.

The literature widely recognizes that shift workers have more health complaints than the general population. The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of sleep complaints and verify the polysomnographic (PSG) variables of shift workers in two Brazilian nuclear power plants. We carried out a subjective evaluation with a sleep questionnaire. Based on these results, the interviewees that reported sleep-related complaints were referred for polysomnographic evaluation. of the 327 volunteers initially evaluated by the sleep questionnaire, 113 (35%) reported sleep complaints; they were significantly older, had higher body mass index (BMI), and worked more years on shifts than those without sleep complaints. of these 113, 90 met criteria for various sleep disorders: 30 (9%) showed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), 18 (5.5%) showed limb movement, and 42 (13%) evidenced both sleep problems and had a significantly higher proportion of sleep stage 1 and arousals compared with the 23 shift workers that had no indices of sleep problems. The present study found that 90 (27.5%) of the evaluated participants met the PSG criteria of some type of clinical sleep disorder. This high proportion should be investigated for associations with other aspects of work, such as working hours, working schedule, years performing shift work, and access to health services. Due to the strong association between sleep disorders and the incidence of fatigue and sleepiness, the evaluation of the sleep patterns and complaints of shift workers is essential and should be considered to be one of the basic strategies of industry to prevent accidents.

Sleep-deprived rats exhibit defensive fighting as well as explosive flights very similar to the wild-running of audiogenic seizures. In order to determine why sleep deprivation is a common factor that facilitates both panic and convulsive manifestations, the present study was undertaken to investigate whether rats that display sleep deprivation-induced fighting (SDIF) are the same as those that are susceptible to audiogenic wild-running (WR). Twenty-eight male adult Wistar rats were divided into two groups assigned to two e-sleep deprivation for 5 days and had their SDIF evaluated in social experimental schemes. In the first, 18 subjects were submitted to REM grouping. After 1 week for recovery, their susceptibility to WR was tested in an acoustic stimulation trial ( 104 dB, 200 Hz, 60 S). Rats that did not present WR received a lactate infusion and were tested again by acoustic stimulation 40 min later. In the second experimental scheme, 10 subjects were initially evaluated for WR susceptibility and the number of SDIF was recorded in social grouping after I week. Three categories of WR-susceptibility were determined: WR-sensitive rats, intermediate WR-sensitive rats and WR-insensitive rats. T'he number of SDIF in each category was significantly different and there was a high positive correlation (r=0.89; Spearman test) between the number of SDIF and the level of WR-susceptibility. We conclude that the reasons why sleep deprivation exerts facilitatory effects on both panic and convulsive manifestations are due to overlappings of neural pathways responsible for both behavioral patterns and for the property of sleep deprivation to increase neuronal excitability.
