Bismuth was evaluated as an internal standard for the direct determination of Pb in vinegar by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using Ru as a permanent modifier with co-injection of Pd/Mg(NO3)(2). The correlation coefficient of the graph plotted from the non-nalized absorbance signals of Bi versus Pb was r=0.989. Matrix effects were evaluated by analyzing the slope ratios between the analytical curve, and analytical curves obtained from Pb additions in red and white wine vinegar obtained from reference solutions prepared in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3, samples. The calculated ratios were around 1.04 and 1.02 for analytical curves established applying an internal standard and 1.3 and 1.5 for analvtical curves without. Analytical curves in the 2.5-15 pg L-1 Pb concentration interval were established using the ratio Pb absorbance to Bi absorbance versus analvte concentration, and typical linear correlations of r=0.999 were obtained. The proposed method was applied for direct determination of Pb in 18 commercial vinegar samples and the Pb concentration varied from 2.6 to 31 pg L-1. Results were in agreement at a 95% confidence level (paired t-test) with those obtained for digested samples. Recoveries of Pb added to vinegars varied from 96 to 108% with and from 72 to 86% without an internal standard. Two water standard reference materials diluted in vinegar sample were also analyzed and results were in agreement with certified values at a 95% confidence level. The characteristic mass was 40 pg Pb and the useful lifetime of the tube was around 1600 firings. The limit of detection was 0.3 mu g L-1 and the relative standard deviation was <= 3.8% and <= 8.3% (n = 12) for a sample containing, 10 mu L-1 Pb with and without internal standard, respectively. The degradation of the antibiotic tetracycline (TC) by the photo-Fenton process was evaluated under black-light and solar irradiation. The influences of iron source (Fe(NO3)(3) or ferrioxalate), hydrogen peroxide and matrix (pure water, surface water and a sewage treatment plant effluent-STP) were evaluated. Under black-light irradiation, TC degradation was favored in the presence of Fe(NO3)(3), achieving total degradation after 1 min irradiation, while under solar light the use of ferrioxalate favors the degradation. Nevertheless, no significant difference in total organic carbon removal was observed between these two iron sources, achieving a residual concentration of around 5 mg L-1 under black-light and 2 mg L-1 under solar light irradiation. No decrease of the degradation efficiency relative to pure water was observed when TC was irradiated in a sample of surface water, under either black-light or solar irradiation. However, lower efficiency was obtained under black-light when TC was present in a sample of STP effluent, indicating the interference of the constituents of this sample on the overall efficiency of the process. on the other hand, under solar irradiation in the presence of ferrioxalate, no influence of the matrix was observed, even in the sample of STP effluent, achieving total degradation of TC in 1.5 min. Arsenic and germanium have been evaluated as internal standards to minimize matrix effects on the direct determination of selenium in milk by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) using tubes with integrated platform, pre-treated with W together with I'd as chemical modifier. The efficiency of As and Ge as internal standards for 25 mu g L-1 Se plus 500 mu g (L)-1 As or Ge in diluted (1 + 9 v/v) milk plus 1.0% (v/v) HNO3 was evaluated by means of correlation graphs plotted from the normalized absorbance signals (n = 20) of internal standard (axis gamma) versus analyte (axis x). The equations that describe the linear regression were: A(As)= - 0.004 +/- 0.019 +/- 1.02 + 0.019 A(Se) (r=0.9967 +/- 0.005); A(Ge)= - 0.0 17 +/- 0.015 + 1.01 +/- 0.015 A(Se) (r = 0.9978 +/- 0.004). Samples and reference solutions were automatically spiked with 500 mu g L-1 Ge or As and 1.0% (v/v) HNO3 by the autosampler. For 20 mu L of aqueous standard solutions, analytical curves in the 5.00-40.0 mu g L-1 Se range were established using the ratio of Se absorbance to internal standard absorbance (A(Se)A(IS)) versus analyte concentration, and good linear correlations were obtained. The characteristic mass was 40 pg Se. Limits of detection were 0.55 and 0.40 mu g L-1 with As and Ge as the internal standard, respectively. Relative standard deviations (RSD) for a sample containing 25 mu g L-1 Se were 1.2% and 1.0% (n = 12) using As and Ge, respectively. The RSD without internal standardization was about 6%. The accuracy of the proposed method was evaluated by an addition-recovery experiment and all recovered values were in the 99-105% range with IS and in the 70-80% range without IS. Using Ge as the internal standard, results of analysis of standard reference materials were in agreement with certified values at a 95% confidence level. The selenium concentration for 10 analyzed milk samples varied from 5.0 to 20 mu g L-1. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry is frequently used for the quantification of many classes of substances, including alkylphenols. Alkylphenol polyethoxylates are nonionic surfactants used in a wide variety of industrial and consumer applications. Alkylphenol polyethoxylates can degrade to alkylphenols, which are endocrine disruptors. In analytical validation procedures, the most common parameters studied are the detection and quantification limits, linearity, and recovery; however, the matrix effects are sometimes neglected. Although some investigators have evaluated matrix effects, there is no consensus on how to evaluate them during method validation. In this study, the matrix effects of alkylphenol polyethoxylates (nonylphenol monoethoxylate, nonylphenol diethoxylate, octylphenol monoethoxylate, octylphenol diethoxylate) and alkylphenols (nonylphenol and octylphenol) were studied using solid phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. For alkylphenol polyethoxylates, the matrix effects ranged from 16 to 4692%, whereas for alkylphenols (nonylphenol and octylphenol), the effects were insignificant. Therefore, constructing an analytical curve in the matrix for alkylphenol polyethoxylates is essential. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Butyltin (BTs) quantification in environmental matrices can be affected by interfering species found primarily in complex matrices, such as sediment and biota tissues. This study investigated matrix effects in analytical procedures for butyltin (TBT,DBT and MBT) quantification and speciation in sediments and in two fish tissues (gill and liver) by gas chromatography with pulsed flame photometric detection (GC-PFPD) analysis. Unlike sediment samples, tissues exhibited a significant matrix effect, thus, the quantification should be made by curve over matrix to avoid quantification errors and loss of analytical accuracy. © 2013 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are the most extensively studied types of immunoassay and their application in pesticide residue monitoring is an area with enormous potential for growth. In comparison with classical analytical methods, ELISA methods offer the possibility of highly sensitive, relatively rapid, and cost-effective measurements. This review introduces the general ELISA formats used, focusing on their use in pesticide analysis. Identifying and studying the effects of interferences in immunoassays is an active area of research and we discuss the matrix effects observed in several studies involving e.g. food, crop and environmental samples. The procedures to eliminate the matrix interferences are briefly discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. B.V.

The use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a sorbent material to separate Cd(II) and Cd-metallothionein complex (Cd-MT) has been explored. Solid-liquid phase extractions were carried out in batch mode and the main parameters of the process (pH, temperature, time of incubation, amount of biomass and analyte) were evaluated. Under optimized conditions, the yeast quantitatively retain (94 +/- 5%) the Cd(II) while 97 +/- 2% of the Cd-MT remain in the supernatant. on base of the findings of this study, a simple method is proposed to determine Cd(II) and Cd-MT in cytosols extracted from mouse kidney and crab hepatopancreas. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry was used to quantify the analytes in solid and liquid phase. Determination of Cd in the solid phase was carried out by introducing a slurry of the yeast (0.0625 g/10 mL) directly to the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer. Mixed standards solutions, which also have been submitted to the extraction procedure, were used to quantify the analytes in the samples. Thus, matrix effects due to nebulization of the slurry were overcame. Limits of detection (3 sigma) for Cd(II) and Cd-MT were 1.5 and 1.2 mu g L-1, respectively. Relative standard deviations of signals were 4.2% for measurements in the slurry of solid phase and 2.1% for measurements in the liquid phase. Recoveries of the analytes in cytosol samples were between 76 and 114%. The concentrations of Cd(II) (2.4 +/- 0.5 mu g L-1) and Cd-MT (3.0 +/- 0.5 mu g L-1) found by using the proposed approach were close to those found by tangential-flow ultrafiltration technique (2.6 +/- 0.7 mu g L-1 for Cd(II) and 3.7 +/- 1.7 mu g L-1 for Cd-MT).

An on-line dialysis flow system coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to determine trace elements in serum samples by isotope dilution is presented. Isotope dilution was performed on samples incubated with enriched Cu-65, Zn-66, Se-77 and Pb-206 for 24 h at 36degreesC prior to dialysis to quantified total element concentrations. The sample and acceptor solutions flowed through the dialysis unit with cellophane membrane placed in between the compartments. The serum sample (1 mL) was left to recycle in a closed path while the acceptor solution was continuously pumped along the dialyzer channel and through a cationic AG50W X-8 resin column. After 10 min, around 70% of Na, K and Cl migrate from the sample. Three replicate injections of 0.1 mL were performed for the clean sample after each separation step. The on-line coupling of the dialyzer to ICP-MS allowed isotope dilution for total element determination either in the cleaned sample or by eluting the cations retained in the resin to be carried out. Results demonstrated no matrix effects from alkaline elements or spectral interference from ArNa+ on Cu-63, ArCl+ on Se-77 and (SO2+)-S-34 on Zn-66. The precision of isotope ratio measurements for Cu and Zn was around 1% and for Se and Pb was around 2.5%. The values found for the reference serum sample IMEP-17 were in good agreement with the certified values for Cu, Zn and Se.

An analytical procedure for direct introduction of biodiesel samples into an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) by using microemulsion for sample preparation was developed here. Cadmium, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, and Zn were determined in biodiesel microemulsified samples prepared from different oleaginous sources (African palm, castor beans, palm, soybeans and an unknown oleaginous). Microemulsions were prepared using 0.25 mL Triton X-100, 0.25 mL 20% v v(-1) HNO(3), 0.50 mL biodiesel sample and 4.0 mL n-propanol. Argon-oxygen mixture was added to the plasma as auxiliary gas for correcting matrix effects caused by the high carbon load due to biodiesel microemulsions. The oxygen gas flow rate was set in 37.5 mL min(-1). The accuracy of the developed procedure was evaluated by applying addition-recovery experiments for biodiesel samples from different sources. Recoveries varied from 76.5 to 116.2% for all analytes but Zn in castor beans biodiesel sample (65.0 to 76.2%). Recoveries lower than 86.6% were obtained for palm biodiesel sample, probably due to matrix effects. Detection limits calculated by using oxygen in the composition of the auxiliary gas added to the plasma were higher than those calculated without using it, probably due to the highest formation of oxides. Despite oxides formation, best analytical performance was reached by using oxygen as auxiliary gas and by proper correction of transport interferences. The developed procedure based on microemulsion formation was suitable for direct introduction of biodiesel samples in ICP-MS. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
