Association between Discoid Lupus erythematosus and Cigarette Smoking - A case-control study

Background. Discoid lupus erythernatosus (DLE) is a chronic cutaneous disease affecting photoexposed areas and has also been associated with cigarette smoking. Objective: To evaluate the association between smoking and DLE. Methods: A case-control study was performed involving 57 cases diagnosed with DLE and 215 healthy controls. Results:A higher smoking prevalence was noted in DLE cases (84.2%) than controls (33.5%), and the odds ratio adjusted for gender, age and ultraviolet index in the city of origin was 14.4 (95% confidence interval 6.2-33.8; multiple logistic regression, p < 0.01). The cumulative smoking exposure was not related to premature DLE development. At the beginning of the disease, smokers had more extensive involvement than nonsmokers; compromise of the upper arms was statistically related to smoking. Conclusion: Cigarette smoking was statistically associated with DLE development. Other studies are needed in order to evaluate the effects of smoking cessation on the course of disease. Critical analysis of the international classification of headache disorders diagnostic criteria (ICHD I-1988) and (ICHD II-2004), for migraine in children and adolescents

The present study analyzed the (ICHD I-1988) and ( ICHD II-2004) diagnostic criteria in children and adolescents. Our population consisted of 496 patients of the Headache Outpatient Ward for Children and Adolescents retrospectively studied from 1992 to 2002. Individuals were classified according to three diagnostic groups: Intuitive Clinical Diagnosis ( Gold Standard), ICHD I-1988 and ICHD II-2004. They were statistically compared using the variables: Sensitivity ( S), Specificity (Sp), Positive Predictive Value (PPV), Negative Predictive Value (NPV). When ICHD I-1988 was used, the sensitivity of migraine without and with aura was 21% and 27%, respectively, whereas in ICHD II-2004 it changed to 53% and 71% without affecting specificity. As a conclusion, the current classification criteria ( ICHD II-2004) showed greater sensitivity and high specificity for migraine than ICHD I-1988, although it improved migraine diagnosis in children and adolescents, the sensitivity remains poor.

A low-voltage programmable-gain CMOS amplifier with very-low temperature-drift

A new topology for a LVLP variable-gain CMOS amplifier is presented. Input- and load-stage are built around triode-transconductors so that voltage-gain is fully defined by a linear relationship involving only device-geometries and biases. Excellent gain-accuracy, temperature-insensitivity; and wide range of programmability, are thus achieved. Moreover, adaptative biasing improves the common-mode voltage stability upon gain-adjusting. As an example, a 0-40dB programmablegain audio-amplifier is designed. Its performance is supported by a range of simulations. For VDD=1.8V and 20dB-nominal gain, one has Av=19.97dB, f3db=770KHz and quiescent dissipation of 378μW. Over temperatures from -25°C to 125°C, the 0. ldB-bandwidth is 52KHz. Dynamic-range is optimized to 57.2dB and 42.6dB for gains of 20dB and 40dB, respectively. THD figures correspond to -60.6dB@Vout= 1Vpp and -79.7dB@Vout= 0.5 Vpp. A nearly constant bandwidth for different gains is also attained.
