OBJETIVE: This study aimed to assess the practices of pharmacists in Hospital Care. Method - we interviewed 20 pharmacists from the Pharmacy Division by applying a structured instrument, in September 2005. This instrument addressed aspects related to the main activities at the Hospital Pharmacy, which were assessed according to indicators organized into five areas: sector management, hospital pharmacotechniques, committee activities, information and pharmacotherapeutic follow-up, as well as teaching and research activities.RESULTS: the Pharmacy Division considered all structural aspects under analysis as essential for the good development and application of its services. We found that some essential services, such as the Medication Information Service and Pharmacotherapeutic Follow-up, were absent. Pharmacist professionals were dissatisfied about human resource and physical structure dimensioning, and they presented as not very active in terms of Pharmaceutical Care.CONCLUSION: Results indicate that care is still centered on the drug, with few clinical activities. We suggest reformulations in service management, particularly in the management of pharmacists.

The aim of this study was to explore female community health agents’ views about the value of recording qualitative information on contextual health issues they observe during home visits, data that are not officially required to be documented for the Brazilian System of Primary Healthcare Information. Background: The study was conducted in community primary healthcare centres located in the cities of Araçatuba and Coroados (state of São Paulo) and Rio de Janeiro (state of Rio de Janeiro), Brazil. Methods: The design was a qualitative, exploratory study. The purposeful sampling criteria were being female, with a minimum of three years of continuous service in the same location. Data collection with 62 participants was conducted via 11 focus groups (in 2007 and 2008). Audio files were transcribed and submitted to the method of thematic analysis. Four themes guided the analysis: working with qualitative information and undocumented observation; reflecting on qualitative information; integrating/analysing quantitative and qualitative information; and information-sharing with agents and family health teams. In 2010, 25 community health agents verified the final interpretation of the findings. Findings: Participants valued the recording of qualitative, contextual information to expand understanding of primary healthcare issues and as an indicator of clients’ improved health behaviour and health literacy. While participants initiated the recording of additional health information, they generally did not inform the family health team about these findings. They perceived that team members devalued this type of information by considering it a reflection of the clientele’s social conditions or problems beyond the scope of medical concerns. Documentation of qualitative evidence can account for the effectiveness of health education in two ways: by improving preventative care, and by amplifying the voices of underprivileged clients who live in poverty to ensure the most appropriate and best quality primary healthcare for them.

Thirty-three feedlot cattle nutritionists were surveyed to evaluate the management practices and nutritional recommendations adopted by feedlots in Brazil. The web-based survey consisted of 81 questions that included: general information (n = 10); general commodity information (n = 15); use of coproducts (n = 5), roughage source and level (n = 5); adaptation methods (n = 7); feed mixers (n = 6); feeding management (n = 6); cattle management and type of cattle fed (n = 13); formulation practices (n = 9); information resources used for nutritional recommendations (n = 2); and additional questions (n = 3). In total, the 33 nutritionists were responsible for approximately 2,658,000 animals, and moreover, 65.5% of those participants had clients that feed less than 5000 animals yearly. Corn was the primary source of grain used in feedlot diets (87.9%) and cracking was the primary processing method recommended by nutritionists (57.6%). The average concentrate and roughage inclusion in finishing diets was 79.0% and 21.0%, respectively. The main challenges faced by nutritionists are the lack of available and precise equipment and lack of trained employees with respiratory diseases as the main health problem. This survey of nutrition and management practices should aid in the development of research for the feedlot industry in Brazil and similar tropical climates, as well as provide data to facilitate the broader application of future NRC models. Ecological processes in tropical forests are being affected at unprecedented rates by human activities. Yet, the continuity of ecological functions like seed dispersal is crucial for forest regeneration. It thus becomes increasingly urgent to be able to rapidly assess the health status of these processes in order to take appropriate management measures. We tested a method to rapidly evaluate seed removal rates on two animal-dispersed tree species, Virola kwatae and V.michelii (Myristicaceae), at three sites in French Guiana with increasing levels of anthropogenic disturbance. We counted fallen fruits, fruit valves, and seeds of each focal fruiting tree in a single 1m2 quadrat, and calculated two indices: the proportion of seeds removed and the proportion of fruits opened by mammals. They both provide an indirect and rapid assessment of frugivore activity. Our results showed a significant decrease in the proportion of removed seeds (16%) and fruits opened (19%) at the most impacted site in comparison with the other two sites (79% for seeds, 60% and 35% for fruits). This testifies to an increased impoverishment of the primate and toucan communities at the disturbed sites. This standardized protocol provides fast information about the health status of the community of seed dispersers and predators and of their seed removal services. It is time- and cost-effective and is not species-specific, allowing comparisons among sites or over time. We suggest using it with the pantropical Myristicaceae and any other capsule-producing family to rapidly assess the health status of seed removal processes across the tropics.

A gestão da informação é extremamente importante para as organizações. O mapeamento informacional é um instrumento que pode ser utilizado no âmbito da gestão da informação. Para realizar o mapeamento informacional, pode-se utilizar o método denominado Infomapping, criado por Burk Jr. e Horton Jr., que se constitui em uma valiosa ferramenta para gerenciar os recursos de informação de uma organização. Ele permite descobrir com exatidão o grau de desconhecimento que se tem sobre as fontes, serviços e sistemas com os quais se desenvolve o trabalho informacional da organização. O processo consiste em criar um levantamento de todas as informações, que supostamente constituem-se num recurso informacional gerado internamente ou produzido externamente, que impactam diretamente as atividades corporativas.

There is an urgent need to find consensus on screening, diagnosing and treating all degrees of DYSGLYCEMIA that may occur during pregnancies in Brazil, considering that many cases of DYSGLYCEMIA in pregnant women are currently not diagnosed, leading to maternal and fetal complications. For this reason the Brazilian Diabetes Society (SBD) and the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Societies (FEBRASGO), got together to introduce this proposal. We present here a joint consensus regarding the standardization of clinical management for pregnant women with any degree of Dysglycemia, on the basis of current information, to improve medical assistance and to avoid related complications of Dysglycemia in pregnancy to the mother and the fetus. This consensus aims to standardize the diagnosis among general practitioners, endocrinologists and obstetricians allowing the dissemination of information in basic health units, public and private services, that are responsible for screening, diagnosing and treating disglycemic pregnant patients.

Objective: To present the proposal of educational workshops on diabetes and a strategy of evaluation aimed at upgrading the professionals' performance in primary care. Methods: The workshops were implemented using participatory methodology, play techniques, experiences, and group dynamics, involving the participation of 85 health professionals from Units of Primary Care, in the city of Belo Horizonte, MG. The knowledge about the disease and the skills required for self-care were measured by applying specific instruments. The workshops were evaluated based on the instrument: developed for that purpose. Results: There were limitations in the knowledge of professionals about pathophysiology and the disease's complementary tests. The workshops helped to awaken the potential of professionals (reflection, criticism and creativity) necessary to change the educational process. It was considered a pedagogical strategy, easy to understand, interactive and playful. Conclusions: The workshops contributed to the planning of the educational process and the structuring of an evaluation model of practices of health and education promotion in diabetes.

Feedlot consulting nutritionists were invited to participate in a survey of feedlot nutritional and management practices in Brazil. Thirty-one nutritionists completed the survey on a Web site that was designed for collection of survey data. The survey consisted of 94 questions that included general information (n = 10); commodity information (n = 12); and questions about the use of coproducts (n = 5), roughage source and levels (n = 5), finishing diet adaptation methods (n = 7), supplements and micronutrients (n = 8), feed mixers (n = 6), feeding management (n = 3), cattle management and type of cattle fed (n = 16), formulation practices (n = 17), information resources used for nutritional recommendations (n = 2), and 2 additional questions. One final question addressed the primary challenges associated with applying nutritional recommendations in practice. The number of animals serviced yearly by each nutritionist averaged 121,682 (minimum = 2,000; maximum = 1,500,000; mode = 120,000; total = 3,163,750). Twenty-two respondents (71%) worked with feedlots that feed less than 5,000 animals/yr. Labor, along with availability and precision of equipment, seemed to be the main challenges for the nutritionists surveyed. Most of the nutritionists surveyed used TDN as the primary energy unit for formulation. More than 50% of the clients serviced by the 31 nutritionists did not manage feed bunks to control the quantity of feed offered per pen, and 36.6% fed cattle more than 4 times daily. The NRC (1996) and Journal of Animal Science were the most used sources of information by these nutritionists. Overall, general practices and nutritional recommendations provided by the 31 nutritionists surveyed were fairly consistent. Present data should aid in development of new research, future National Research Council models, and recommendations for Brazilian feeding systems in which Bos indicus cattle predominate.

Na fase da adolescência, o indivÃduo experimenta os melhores Ãndices de saúde, os quais podem ser mantidos e/ou melhorados, dependendo da percepção e valorização dos mesmos, influenciando na sua qualidade de vida. O estudo avaliou a opinião de adolescentes (n=493) da Fundação Mirim do MunicÃpio de Araçatuba - SP, quanto à saúde geral e bucal, bem como sua percepção sobre elas, por meio questionário semiestruturado, durante o ano letivo de 2006, já que os mesmos possuem acesso à atenção à saúde bucal e palestras sobre saúde. Dentre os entrevistados 34,5% conceituaram a saúde como coisa ou algo que precisa(mos) cuidar; 26,6%, como bem-estar; 18,1%, como a própria existência; e 14,5%, como ausência de doença. em relação aos conceitos de saúde bucal, 68,4% definiram como higiene; 16,2%, como aparência; e 15,5%, como ausência de doenças bucais. A percepção desses jovens quanto a sua saúde em geral foi para 46,5%, ótima, e 44,1%, boa, enquanto que a da sua saúde bucal foi para 53,6%, boa, e 24%, ótima. Pode-se concluir que os adolescentes têm uma ideia tanto sobre saúde geral como saúde bucal, porém a classificação é menor no que tange à saúde bucal, pois envolve aspectos afetivos, estéticos e sociais. Ademais, percebe-se a necessidade de programas educativo-preventivos direcionados a esse grupo.

O profissional de saúde é um ponto-chave para a implementação do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). À medida que exerce sua função, o sistema passa do aspecto teórico-conceitual para a prática da atenção. Objetivou-se neste estudo verificar o nÃvel de conhecimento sobre o Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) dos coordenadores de saúde bucal e cirurgiões-dentistas do serviço público dos 40 municÃpios da região noroeste do Estado de São Paulo. Utilizou-se um questionário estruturado, autoaplicável, composto de questões referentes aos princÃpios doutrinários e organizativos do SUS, controle social, financiamento, formação de recursos humanos, atenção e assistência em saúde. Dos entrevistados, 77 (89,5%) não sabiam quem era o responsável pelo planejamento e execução da assistência, 53 (61,6%) não tinham conhecimento de equidade, 46 (53,5%) de fundo de saúde e 45 (52,3%) de controle social. Conclui-se que existe deficiência no conhecimento de determinados assuntos, havendo necessidade de promoção de cursos a respeito da filosofia do SUS.

Objective: This investigation evaluated the knowledge of dental caries and periodontal disease among removable partial denture (RPD) wearers.Method: A total of 127 partially dentate patients participated in this observational study. A structured questionnaire, which included eight questions referring to knowledge about aetiology and prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease, was developed in the local language (Portuguese) and used to collect the data of all the partial denture wearers. A descriptive analysis of data was performed by means of drafting tables.Results: The results demonstrated that 68.5% of patients interviewed had previously received information about oral health care. With regard to bacterial plaque, it was observed that only 34.6% reported having knowledge of this. Whereas, in relation to caries, 76.4% of the interviewees replied that they knew the meaning of this. Nevertheless, 28.3% referred to caries as a whole in the teeth, 16.5% as bad teeth and 9.4% bacteria/creatures on the teeth. Only 17.3% of the partially edentulous patients evaluated were shown to know what disease of the gingiva was.Conclusion: By means of the methodology applied, it could be concluded that the patients who wore RPDs presented deficient knowledge with regard to the prevention, aetiology and development of dental caries and periodontal disease.

Em saúde bucal, a situação epidemiológica brasileira ainda é grave devido à s condições sociais e econômicas da população, à pequena parcela de investimentos que a área recebe em relação ao total do SUS e à falta de informação sobre os cuidados básicos de saúde. Embora a odontologia se mostre muito desenvolvida em tecnologia, não responde em nÃveis significativos à s demandas dos problemas de saúde bucal da população. Nesse contexto, a educação em saúde bucal tem sido cada vez mais requisitada, considerando o baixo custo e as possibilidades de impacto odontológico no âmbito público e coletivo. A importância de práticas preventivas e educativas em saúde bucal nos levou a realizar este estudo, apontando diferentes programas odontológicos, mediante estudo de revisão, para analisá-los em suas propostas, metodologias, possibilidades e limitações, visando refletir sobre o tema com foco nos aspectos educativos que ainda desafiam os programas de saúde bucal. Identificaram-se quatro tendências nos programas analisados. O estudo apontou para a necessidade de se repensar as práticas educativas.
