In the present paper, we report on the occurrence of the cockroach Pycnoscelus surinamensis (Linnaeus, 1758) in Brachymyrmex cordemoyi Forel, 1895 nests, indicating a possible symbiosis between these two species. Also, the finding of intradomicile P. surinamensis nymphs may indicate this species is extending its habitat to human habitations, i.e. changing its ecological category from peridomestic to domestic.

Although the prevalence of caries has decreased dramatically over the past decades, it has become a polarised disease, with most of subjects presenting low caries levels and few individuals accounting for most of the caries affected surfaces. Thus it become evident for the need of clinical approaches directed at these high-risk patients, in order to overcome problems related to compliance and low attendance at dental care centres. Slow-release fluoride devices were developed based on the inverse relationship existing between intra-oral fluoride levels and dental caries experience. The two main types of slow-release devices - copolymer membrane type and glass bead - are addressed in the present review. A substantial number of studies have demonstrated that these devices are effective in raising intra-oral F concentrations at levels able to reduce enamel solubility, resulting in a caries-protective effect. Studies in animals and humans demonstrated that the use of these devices was able to also protect the occlusal surfaces, not normally protected by conventional fluoride regimens. However, retention rates have been shown to be the main problem related to these devices and still requires further improvements. Although the results of these studies are very promising, further randomised clinical trials are needed in order to validate the use of these devices in clinical practice. The concept of continuously providing low levels of intra-oral fluoride has great potential for caries prevention in high caries-risk groups.

Following previously published observations that a conditioned response (CR) was lost more quickly by rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) exhibiting a high responsiveness to stressors than by low responding individuals this study was designed to investigate the effects of exogenous cortisol on the retention of a CR in unselected rainbow trout. Fish held in isolation were conditioned over a 10-day period by pairing an innocuous signal (conditioned stimulus, CS: a water jet played on the surface of the tank water) with a mild stressor (unconditioned stimulus, US: 30 min of confinement). This resulted in a brief elevation of plasma cortisol levels (the CR) when the fish was exposed to the CS only. The effect of exogenous cortisol on the retention of the CR was evaluated by comparing the performance of fish that received cortisol-containing slow-release intraperitoneal implants, with fish receiving vehicle-only implants. Retention of the CR was assessed at intervals up to 35 days after conditioning ceased. The CR was considered to be evident when 30 min following presentation of the CS, mean plasma cortisol levels were significantly higher in conditioned than untrained fish. on day 1 both cortisol-implanted and vehicle-implanted conditioned fish exhibited a CR. However, from day 5 onwards the CR was observed only in the vehicle-implanted and conditioned group. This finding indicates that administration of cortisol accelerated the extinction of the CR in the cortisol-implanted fish, suggesting that elevated plasma cortisol levels can impair memory processes in rainbow trout. The aim of this study was to investigate if the Na+-channel activating alkaloid veratrine is able to change the oxidative and m-ATPase activities of a fast-twitch glycolytic muscle (EDL, extensor digitorum longus) and slow-twitch oxidative muscle (SOL, soleus) in mice. Oxidative fibers and glycolytic fibers were more sensitive to veratrine than oxidative-glycolytic fibers 15, 30 and 60 min after the i.m. injection of veratrine (10 ng/kg) with both showing an increase in their metabolic activity in both muscles. In EDL, the m-ATPase reaction revealed a significant (p < 0.001) decrease (50%) in the number of type IIB fibers after 30 min while the number of type I fibers increased by 550%. Type I fibers decreased from 34% in control SOL to 17% (50% decrease) in veratrinized muscles, with a 10% decrease in type IIA fibers within 15 min. A third type of fiber appeared in SOL veratrinized muscle, which accounted for 28% of the fibers. Our work gives evidence that the changes in the percentage of the fiber types induced by veratrine may be the result, at least partially, from a direct effect of veratrine on muscle fibers and else from an interaction with the muscle type influencing distinctively the response of a same fiber type. Based on the results obtained in the present study the alterations in EDL may be related to the higher number of Na+ channels present in this muscle whereas those in SOL may involve an action of veratrine on mitochondria. Although it is unlikely that the shift of enzymes activities induced by veratrine involves genotypic expression changes an alternative explanation for the findings cannot be substantiated by the present experimental approach. An improved on-site characterization of humic-rich hydrocolloids and their metal species in aquatic environments was the goal of the present approach. Both ligand exchange with extreme chelators ( diethylenetetraaminepentaacetic acid ( DTPA), ethylendiaminetetraacetic acid ( EDTA)) and metal exchange with strongly competitive cations (Cu(II)) were used on-site to characterize the conditional stability and availability of colloidal metal species in a humic-rich German bogwater lake ( Venner Moor, Munsterland). A mobile time-controlled tangential-flow ultrafiltration technique (cut-off: 1 kDa) was applied to differentiate operationally between colloidal metal species and free metal ions, respectively. DOC ( dissolved organic carbon) and metal determinations were carried out off-site using a home-built carbon analyzer and conventional ICP-OES ( inductively-coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry), respectively. From the metal exchange equilibria obtained on-site the kinetic and thermodynamic stability of the original metal species ( Fe, Mn, Zn) could be characterized. Conditional exchange constants K ex obtained from aquatic metal species and competitive Cu(II) ions follow the order Mn > Zn >> Fe. Obviously, Mn and Zn bound to humic-rich hydrocolloids are very strongly competed by Cu( II) ions, in contrast to Fe which is scarcely exchangeable. The exchange of aquatic metal species (e.g. Fe) by DTPA/EDTA exhibited relatively slow kinetics but rather high metal availabilities, in contrast to their Cu(II) exchange.

Strains of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans exhibited differences in the inhibition of Fe(2+) oxidation in the presence of 250 mm of cadmium, zinc, and manganese sulfates in respirometric assays. Strains LR and I35 were practically not inhibited, whereas strains SSP and V3 showed significant inhibition (30-70%). Analysis by SDS-PAGE of total proteins from cells grown in the absence of metal sulfates showed different profiles between the more tolerant strains (LR and 135) and the more susceptible ones (SSP and V3). Total proteins of strains LR and V3 were also resolved by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE). A set of major proteins (40, 32, 22, and 20 kDa) could be identified only in the more tolerant strain LR. Our results show that protein profiles analysis could differentiate A. ferrooxidans strains that considerably differ in the tolerance to metal sulfates and present low genomic similarity as revealed by Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) data obtained previously in our laboratory.

We analyze the dynamics of a reaction-diffusion equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a dumbbell domain. We provide an appropriate functional setting to treat this problem and, as a first step, we show in this paper the continuity of the set of equilibria and of its linear unstable manifolds.
