Após profunda pesquisa sobre possíveis temas para abordar nesta dissertação, eis que chegamos ao nome de Manuel Caetano Pimenta de Aguiar, dramaturgo madeirense, de ideais liberais vincados, nascido no século XVIII e com um período de fecundidade literária nos primórdios do Século XIX, uma época marcada por forte instabilidade políticas que também haveria de sacudir o mundo da criação artística. Interessaram-nos do conjunto da sua obra, toda ela constituída por tragédias, O Carácter dos Lusitanos, D. João I e D. Sebastião em África. Nelas intuímos a coerência da matéria de pendor nacionalista, tão cara ao gosto romântico que então desabrochava. A sua obra, com evidentes traços clássicos, mostra já uma originalidade ao nível dos temas tratados. Veremos como se mantém fiel a toda a estrutura da tragédia, mas como introduz novos conceitos, que serão mais tarde desenvolvidos pelos Românticos, como sejam, o gosto pela morte e o horrendo, o nacionalismo exacerbado e a exaltação da história e dos heróis nacionais.

“A Narratological Analysis of D. M. Thomas’s The White Hotel (1981)” originated within a seminar on British Postmodernist Literature during the first Master’s Degree in “British and North-American Culture and Literature” (2001-04) at the Universidade da Madeira set up by the Department of English and German Studies. This dissertation seeks to present a narratological analysis of Thomas’s novel. The White Hotel stands as a paradigmatic example of the kind of literature that has dominated the British literary scene in the past three decades, commonly referred to as postmodernist fiction, owing to its formal craftsmanship (multiplicity of narrative voices and perspectives, mixing of differing genres and text types, inclusion of embedded narratives) alongside the handling of what are deemed as postmodernist topoi (the distinction between truth and lies, history and fantasy, fact and fiction, the questioning of the nature of aesthetic representation, the role the author and the reader hold in the narrative process, the instability of the linguistic sign, the notion of originality and the moral responsibility the author has towards his/her work), The narratological approach carried out in this research reveals that Thomas’s text constitutes an aesthetic endeavour to challenge the teleological drive that is inherent in any narrative, i. e., the inevitable progression towards a reassuring end. Hence, the subversion of narrative telling, which is a recurrent feature in Thomas’s remaining literary output, mirrors the contemporary distrust in totalising, hierarchised and allencompassing narratives. In its handling of historical events, namely of the Holocaust, The White Hotel invites us to reassess the most profound beliefs we were taught to take for granted: progress, reality and truth. In their place the novel proposes a more flexible conception of both the world and art, especially of literary fiction. In other terms, the world appears as a brutal chaotic place the subject is forced to adjust to. Accordingly, the literary work is deemed hybrid, fragmented and open. So as to put forth the above-mentioned issues, this research work is structured in three main chapters. The initial chapter – “What is Postmodernism?” – advances a scrutiny not only of the seminal but also of more recent studies on postmodernist literary criticism. Following this, in Chapter II – “Postmodernist British Fiction” – a brief overview of postmodernist British fiction is carried out, focusing on the fictional works that, in my opinion, are fundamental for the periodising of British postmodernism. In addition, I felt the need to include a section – “D. M. Thomas as a Postmodernist Novelist” – in which the author’s remaining literary output is briefly examined. Finally, Chapter III – “A Narratological Analysis of The White Hotel” – proposes a narratological analysis of the novel according to the particular Genettian analytical model. To conclude, my dissertation constitutes an approach to D. M. Thomas’s The White Hotel as a text whose very existence is substantiated in the foregrounding of the contingency of all discourses, meeting the postmodernist precepts of openness and subversion of any narrative that claims to be true, globalising and all-inclusive.

Nesta dissertação, apresenta-se o trabalho realizado no decorrer do segundo ano do Mestrado em Bioquímica Aplicada. Prepararam-se nanopartículas metálicas através da redução química de sais metálicos em solução. Obtiveram-se soluções coloidais monometálicas de Au, Ag e FeOx e bimetálicas de Au/Ag, Ag/Au, FeOx/Au e FeOx/Ag seguindo ou adaptando métodos publicados na literatura. Numa primeira fase foram sintetizadas nanopartículas monometálicas de prata e ouro utilizando-se β-D-glucose, borohidreto dedio e β-ciclodextrina como agente redutor dos iões metálicos. Seguidamente, por co-redução de uma mistura de iões prepararam-se ligas de nanopartículas de prata e ouro e por redução sucessiva de Ag e Au sintetizaram-se nanopartículas com uma estrutura núcleo-concha. As nanopartículas de FeOx foram preparadas por co-precipitação de Fe (III) e Fe (II). O revestimento com ouro foi conseguido através da redução com citrato dedio e para a deposição de prata utilizou-se o ácido ascórbico. As soluções coloidais preparadas foram caracterizadas através de estudos de espetroscopia do UV-vis, tendo sido registados os máximos de absorvância característicos do ouro e da prata e os desvios esperados para o caso das nanopartículas núcleo-concha. As análises por dispersão dinâmica de luz permitiram auferir o tamanho das nanopartículas, eventual aglomeração e, portanto, permitiram a apreciação da estabilidade dos coloides. Com o intuito de confirmar a formação de estruturas em camada núcleo-concha foi feita a caracterização das amostras por microscopia eletrónica de transmissão e espetroscopia de raios-X de energia dispersiva. Alguns dos espetros obtidos confirmam o sucesso na preparação de uma estrutura em multicamada. Finalmente, demonstrou-se a biocompatibilidade de algumas amostras preparadas através da realização de estudos de citotoxicidade na linha celular fibroblástica NIH 3T3.

In Chapter 1, rhodium nanoparticles were supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and bound to the magnetic core-shell system Fe3O4@TiO2. The composite Fe3O4@TiO2-Rh-MWCNT and the intermediates were characterized by SEM, EDS and TEM. Their catalytic activity was studied using i) the hydrogenation transfer of nitroarenes and cyclohexene in the presence of hydrazine hydrate; ii) the reduction of 2-nitrophenol with NaBH4; and iii) the decoloration of pigments in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The results were monitored by gas chromatography (i) and UV Visible (ii and iii). In the second chapter, the catalytic activity of six oxidovanadium(V) aroylhydrazone complexes, viz. [VOL1(OEt)][VOL1(OEt)(EtOH)] (1), [VOL2(OEt)] (2), [Et3NH][VO2L1] (3), [VO2(H2L2)]2·EtOH (4), [VOL1(µ -O)VOL1] (5) and [VOL2(µ -O)VOL2] (6) (H2L1 = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2hydroxybenzohydrazide and H2L2 = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2 aminobenzohydrazide), anchored on nanodiamonds with different treatments, was studied towards the microwave-assisted partial oxidation of 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as oxidant. A high selectivity for acetophenone was achieved for the optimized conditions. The possibility of recycling and reuse the heterogeneous catalysts was also investigated. In chapter 3, the catalytic activity of gold nanoparticles supported at different metal oxides, such as Fe2O3, Al2O3 ZnO or TiO2, was studied for the above reaction. The effect of the support, quantity of the catalyst and temperature was investigated. The recyclability of the gold catalysts was also studied. In the last chapter, a new copper nanocomposite with functionalized mutiwalled carbon nanotubes (Cu-MWCNT) was synthesized using a microwave assisted polyol method. The characterization was performed using XRD and SEM. The catalytic activity of Cu-MWCNT was studied through the degradation of pigments, such as amaranth, brilliant blue, indigo, tartrazine and methylene blue.
